Potthoff Stepping Down From Milwaukee Women’s Tennis Position

Departs after five seasons with the Panthers

MILWAUKEE – Following a five-year tenure, Jason Potthoff has announced his resignation as the Milwaukee women's tennis head coach, effective immediately, to pursue other professional opportunities.

This season, Potthoff's Panthers advanced to the Horizon League Championship final for the first time in program history, eventually falling to Youngstown State 4-3 in the title match. He led the Panthers to an overall record of 51-54 in dual-meet action in his time, going 19-17 in Horizon League play. He took the program to the Horizon League Tournament in three of the past four seasons and was stellar at home, going 23-11 over the past four years, including a 10-3 mark in 2021.

"It's definitely with mixed emotions that we make this announcement," Director of Athletics Amanda Braun said. "We wish Jason nothing but success in the next step. He worked tirelessly in his time here to move the tennis program in the right direction – providing a great experience for the student-athletes while also staying focused on the academic mission. His teams always consisted of competitive players that worked as hard in the classroom as they did on the court."

Potthoff recruited and coached Milwaukee's first two Horizon League Freshmen of the Year in Mayya Perova (2019) and Greta Carbone (2021). Alexandra Belle (2019), Carbone (2021), and Perova (2022) were also named First Team All-League during his time at Milwaukee. Potthoff saw his team claim the Horizon League "Raise Your Sights School Winners" award numerous times, the honor going to the program with the highest overall GPA in the department. The team won ten dual meets this school year, posting a 5-4 mark in Horizon League play, culminating with Milwaukee's first-ever league runner-up finish.

The program was building off a very successful 2021 season in which he led the program to a 14-8, 7-5 record and earned Milwaukee's second ever third-place finish and a spot into the Horizon League tournament for the second time in three years. Those 14 wins marked a new school record for the most team victories in a single season.

Potthoff came to Milwaukee from the University of Houston after serving as the assistant coach for two seasons. There he helped guide the Cougars to an Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) national ranking high of No. 38.

Prior to Houston, Potthoff spent four seasons as the assistant coach at the University of Missouri, where he was also in charge of recruiting and on-court player development. Potthoff graduated from Texas A&M University in 2005, where he began his coaching career as a graduate assistant with the Texas A&M men's team.

A national search for a new women's tennis head coach is already underway.
