A Panther mental health awareness series

MILWAUKEE – In conjunction with World Mental Health Day on October 10, the Milwaukee Athletic Department is running a series this month focusing on mental health awareness of Panther student-athletes. Each entry is shared directly in the student-athlete's own words.

"We are taught, especially as athletes, to be tough and push through pain. We don't want to show weakness or vulnerability, which makes asking for help extremely difficult.

I have struggled with depression for many years, and when it became more severe in college, it took me a long time to seek treatment. Much like physical illness, my experience has consisted of numerous hospitalizations, medications, and even stigmatized procedures like electroconvulsive 'shock' therapy. It has put my life in jeopardy on more than one occasion. It sidelined me from seasons of competition, just like an injury. The only difference was, I felt like I had to hide my struggle from others.

I am lucky to be surrounded by so many caring, extraordinary individuals here at UWM, and from those I have confided in, I have received overwhelming support. I want this support to be available to everyone, which is what motivated me to establish a group of student-athlete mental health advocates.

I was reluctant to share my story at first, thinking that was only something one does after recovering. The truth is, I still battle with my mental health every day. However, as difficult as it is to discuss, I realized this is exactly the type of open conversation and visibility that I want to encourage among athletes who are struggling. I share my experience in hopes of spreading awareness, decreasing stigma, and letting others know that they are not alone.

As difficult as it is, please do not be afraid to reach out for help. Check up on your friends and teammates. I am ALWAYS available as a resource or someone to talk to, as are my fellow advocates."
