Our Commitment and a Call to Action

Dear Members of the UNAGB Community,

We hope this email finds you safe and healthy.

We are with you in grief after the deaths of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, and Ahmaud Arbery. We recognize their deaths as heartbreaking examples, among countless others, of systemic racism that stands in direct contradiction of human rights, which are core to the founding and purpose of the United Nations.

We also write this in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, which has devastated the lives of many through illness, social isolation, interrupted education, and economic hardship. We recognize that these impacts disproportionately affect the African American and Latinx communities.

This is a critical time to strengthen our commitment to human rights and take meaningful action. We must continue to work for justice, for racial equality, for socioeconomic justice, for poverty alleviation, for women’s rights, for children’s rights, for all fundamental human rights. Whatever position we find ourselves in, we must play our role and effect positive change.

At this same moment, we also know that our way through this pandemic and the global challenges that we will face in the future will need to be aided by multilateral cooperation and a strong US engagement with the UN. This is why we are also deeply concerned with the President's remarks on Friday, May 29 about his intention for the US to withdraw from the World Health Organization.

Knowing that we live in a global and interdependent world, we should all continue to advocate on behalf of one another to ensure we live in a better and safer world not just for some but for all. We invite each of you to join our virtual SDG Committee Meeting on June 9th as we prepare for remote advocacy to Congressional leaders during the UNA-USA “Week of Action.” Our meeting will start with a speaker who will help ground our advocacy in anti-oppression.

You can sign up for the June 9th meeting by clicking here. You can learn more about the SDG Committee here. We hope you'll join us.

To all in the UNAGB community, we are grateful for the opportunity to partner with you in caring for our community and our world.  Let us continue to choose: Justice against injustice, Kindness against brutality, Mercy against ruthlessness, Humanity against inhumanity, Courage against cowardice, and above all Love against hatred.

Sincerely,

Dr. Arese Carrington
