Message from Randal Burns, head of the Department of Computer Science

 
The 2020-2021 academic year promises to be the most dynamic period in the Department’s history. Computer science is fundamental to human prosperity, equity, and wellness. Automation is revolutionizing transport and manufacturing and data science is transforming health care.
The interest in computing has grown in proportion with its importance and we are teaching and mentoring more students than ever before.

Robots On The Front Lines Of COVID-19

Russell Taylor, John C. Malone Professor of computer science, speaks to NBC News about robots that can help protect human healthcare workers avoid COVID-19 in the ICU by performing certain tasks.

Alexander Szalay Receives Viktor Ambartsumian International Science Prize


Szalay was recognized for “his pioneering work on demonstrating that the dark matter in the universe might be a neutral, weakly interacting particle, and for his contributions to data-driven, statistical cosmology.”

Discovery

Peng “Ryan” Huang receives NSF CAREER Award


The five-year award will support his project, “Towards Gray-Fault Tolerant Cloud through Harnessing and Enhancing System Observability,” which aims to improve the availability of modern cloud system infrastructure by developing a holistic approach that can detect, pinpoint, and diagnose gray failures in production systems.

Recognition

Eli Sherman named 2020 Google Machine Learning Fellow


Sherman, a PhD candidate in the Department of Computer Science, will study how machine learning can help improve clinical decision-making and allocation of healthcare resources.
