IES Raleigh Announces
2022-2023 IES Raleigh Section Officer Election Results

Update to 2022-2023 Section Officers:
President - Mai Carr Zakerin
Vice President - Katherine Hershey

Welcome to our new Section Officers, Board of Managers and Committee Chairs! We are looking forward to a successful 2022-2023 season, which kicks-off in August.

We have great appreciation and gratitude for the 2021-2022 Board of Managers and all who served on committees.  As our world returned to normal this past year, our lighting community responded with renewed energy and participation to the quality LIGHTHOUSE education programs and regular social networking opportunities which were a result of the hard work and dedication of the teams of volunteers this past year.  Thank you!

The 2022-2023 year is starting off with the same energy!  The new leadership will continue to educate and strengthen our lighting community and update knowledge as we have done.  As the local lighting experts, we will continue to share our lighting knowledge to others in our community to help improve our NC community.

Member Spotlight

This issue's member spotlight is on Michael Younts!
When did you first hear about the IES and what prompted you to join?
I heard about the IES soon after starting in the industry in the early 2000's and attended the meetings whenever I could. I joined to support the mission of IES and to formalize my long term participation.
At what point in your career did you come to understand lighting was the career path for you?
I realized lighting was a career path that I would focus on early on. I enjoyed the three dimensional aspect of the design and modeling. It was unlike anything else in the electrical discipline.
Past/Recent Projects
Major projects that I have worked on recently include ACE Theatre Lighting Upgrades at UNC School of the Arts, Fuquay-Varina High School, Fuller Elementary School, & Leesville Road Campus (ES, MS, & HS). I have recently performed facility conditions assessments for Wake County, Cumberland County, Appalachian State University, & the City of Sanford.
When not serving the advancement of the art and science of lighting, how do you like to spend your free time?
I like to spend my time hiking, watching sports, and sampling our local craft beers.

Project Feature

WCPSS

Project submitted by Engineers Inc (Michael Younts, PE, LEED AP BD+C)
Client: WCPSS
Project Description: The project was a complete replacement of the original Fuller ES on the same site. The project goals included a larger school, with more classroom spaces, and adding collaborative spaces throughout the facility.
Name at least one unique challenge associated with this project? There were several challenges for this project. Our client wanted practical, but fun spaces using shape combinations and color. Luminaires had to met requirements of form and function, not just be pretty fixtures. The design had to incorporate acoustic material and exceptional performance into the design.

The added benefits and performance of the acoustical materials were also supplemented by the safe and eco-friendly acoustical materials.
Acoustic material and also eco-friendly material including 100% polyester containing up to 50% recycled plastic bottles (PET felt); moisture resistant. While behind mindful of a urface burning characteristics: ASTM E84 Class A with Flame spread: 0 & Smoke Development Index: 300.

What factors contributed to the success of this project? Our success on this project was due to the willingness of the design team to incorporate a new fixture type into the design. It was also important to do research to select an efficient, eco-friendly fixture with acceptable acoustic performance. It was important to coordinate color selections with the building finishes selected by the architect in each area. And finally we created interest by selecting different fixture styles and types in multiple spaces with varying colors.
