Raleigh Section Leadership
We are currently searching for our next President to help us have a successful 2021-2022 season, which kicks-off in August.
Raleigh has a strong Section with many engaged members, an experienced Vice President and a full slate of other officers and Board members, so this will be a really easy job!
Here are a few responsibilities that the Section President will take on:
- Lead a few Board meetings during the year.
- Delegate tasks to officers and Board members based on defined roles in Section Guide
- File President Reports to District Chair 3-4 times per year (online form)
- Introduce speakers at virtual and in-person meetings; preside over meetings as needed
- Sign the Financial Report at the end of the fiscal year (June/July)
- Attend the District Executive Council meeting (typically in-person) and Regional Nominating Committee meeting (typically virtual)
- Participate in IES Leadership Forum throughout your term to learn from other Section leaders, past and present
Persons interested should contact Katherine Hershey (khershey@teamlighting.com) or the general Raleigh Section inbox (iesraleighsection@gmail.com).

Past/Recent Projects: Tunable Lighting for Classrooms, State of NC Guidance Document for Solid-State Lighting
When did you first hear about the IES and what prompted you to join? I first heard about IES around 2007 through the standards work that was needed to promote the emergence of solid-state lighting (SSL) technologies. I was encouraged to join IES by several colleagues and officially joined IES in June 2009. A primary motivation for me to join IES was the education component, networking opportunities, and to keep track of the quickly emerging standards (e.g., LM-79, LM-80) that were being developed for the SSL industry.
What is the best thing about the Society? Why do you continue to renew? The best thing about being part of IES is the networking opportunities both at the Raleigh section level and at the national level. There are so many opportunities to get involved in IES and make connections throughout the industry including the local section, standards committees, educational committees, and the national meeting. My IES participation has played a key role in building my personal networks.
At what point in your career did you come to understand lighting as a career path for you? I started focusing myself on lighting in the middle of my career around 2005. The lighting industry was undergoing significant change with the emergence of SSL technologies in the market. My previous background was in electronics and telecom manufacturing, so the metamorphosis occurring in the lighting industry was something that I had experienced previously. I was interested in being part of another growing industry that impacts everyone’s life.
When not serving the advancement of the art and science of lighting, how do you like to spend your free time? I send my free time doing things around the house and playing a little golf. I am also a big fan of the Carolina Hurricanes and of course the UNC Tar Heels.

Project Description: Perkins+Will needed to relocate its office to Durham’s Legacy Tower ASAP. Built in 1965 and noted as one of the tallest buildings in Durham, Legacy Tower is a 14-story high-rise building. Perkins+Will planned to outfit the second floor of the Tower. To outfit the space, existing lighting would be demolished, and new and fresh lighting strategy would be implemented. The total area of the second floor was 12,395 sf with 10,880 sf set aside for total usable space.

What factors contributed to the success of this project? The great working relationship of the manufacturer’s sales representative and lighting designer was key. The hands-on involvement and direct line of communication between the two fostered a more invested approach to the execution of the lighting design. In addition, having the architect as the client allowed for immediate by-in and appreciation of the lighting design and a more seamless integration between the architecture and lighting.
What was a unique challenge associated with this project? In addition to the fast-track schedule, the architect proposed an open floor plan with open ceiling. The office space needed to be lit from above with low glare indirect lighting, with few portable task lights. The lighting strategy needed to be inclusive of a comprehensive lighting control system.
