Renton Sailing Masthead

October 2019

International Coastal Cleanup

Saturday, October 12 9:30 - 11:30 a.m.

Join Renton Sailing Center for the International Coastal Cleanup. We will meetup near the Kidd Valley at 9:30 for snacks, instructions, buckets, trash pickers data sheets and fun then spread out around the Park to cleanup the shoreline. We'll gather back before 11:30 to check out our amazing finds. We'll do our part for the Park that hosts us as well as bring attention to plastics and marine debris in our waterways. We will be part of Coastal Cleanup's happening around the world. Stay for Open Sailing.

Spooky Sail

We'll open up for Open Sailing October 27 from noon to 4. Wear a costume get a treat. No costume, get a trick.

Eagle Harbor Cruise

October 5 and 6 Members will Sail to Eagle Harbor and back. The emphasis will be on skills such as locking through, Plotting fixes, calculating set/drift, crossing the traffic separation scheme and other sills required for the Salish Sea cruising sign off.

As of writing this the boat has a full crew for Saturday and Sunday!

Winter Rules!

Just because winter is around the corner the sailing doesn't stop. Most of the powerboats go away and we have the lake to ourselves on some beautiful days with great breeze.

We will not be seeking out Dock Master signs up for every Saturday and Sunday but Dockmasters may occasionally open up. Keep an eye on the Calendar, this newsletter, and your email for opportunities to go sailing.

We have changed to Winter Rules for when we do open for open sailing. If no one RSVP's for Open Sailing by 24 hours ahead  the volunteer will not open up. I'ts always a courtesy to RSVP for Open Sailing anyway.

You can also arrange to sail with a Mentor from our Mentor Group. It's best to suggest a specific date and time to arrange crew or contact one of our Dockmasters to set up Open Sailing by request.

A huge Thank You! to all the Dockmasters who opened up in 2019. We are on track to be open more in 2019 than any previous year.

Volunteer Opportunities

Thank you! Our fleet is is great shape and are costs are low because of you:
  • Dean for screwing the piling caps back together, building up some plastic where we take out the RS Quest so the centerboard trunk doesn't catch, put some sealant and tightened screws backing out of the centerboard trunk, screwing down some loose decking and put new line on the Vision trolley winch.
  • Amos and Simone networked the chartplotter and the VHF so the VHF now received location data. John and Tyler programmed the MMSI.
  • Amos and Christina pulled out the Hunter 170 and cleaned the bottom and foils.
  • Michal Malasiewicz and Beth for installing the cantilevered section of fence for additional security.
  • John for sorting and cleaning the dockboxes, repairing some cracks on on the RS Vision, and straightening some bent tiller extensions.
  • John, Simone, and Neal for installing new winches on the Ranger 24
  • John and Josh for replacing the weatherstripping on the Catalina 27 foredeck hatch.
  • Mike Jarvis and Amos for fixing a fouled furler on an RS Vision
  • Peter for getting some canvas repaired
  • Brian for taking some Canvas to the Shop and Sails to the Loft.
  • Phil for replacing worn O-rings on RS Vision Deck Plates
Keelboat Skippers: most of these can be completed by a beginning or intermediate sailor with the help of a keelboat skipper.
  • Reseal Starboard Aft Deadlight on Catalina 27. Contact Mike Jacobsen at mikeJ@rentonsailing.org. Approximately 5 hours. Check out this series of how to videos https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HvLzqE5QsMw
  • Fabricate and install circular plastic cover for Catalina 27 Steaming Light. Contact Loren at maintenance@rentonsailing.org. Approximately 4 hours.

  • Through-Hull Bungs: attach with a lanyard the appropriate size soft wood plug to the through hull fittings on the Ranger 24 and Catalina 27. Contact Loren at maintenance@rentonsailing.org. Approximately 2 1/2 hours.

  • Clean, Lubricate and Rebuild cabin top and mast winches on Catalina 27. For the mechanically inclined. We have winch grease and oil in the dock box. Read the Lewmar service manual and watch the videos. Contact Loren at maintenance@rentonsailing.org.  Approximately 4 1/2 hours.
  • Basic Keelboat Instructors. It takes approximately 24 hours to complete the Basic Keelboat Instructor Course and 20 hours annually to conduct a Basic Keelboat Course. Contact John at JohnP@rentonsailing.org or Tyler at education@rentonsailing.org
Advanced Sailors:
  • More Dockmasters to make Open Sailing happen. Contact Simone at simone@rentonsailing.org. 5 hours per shift.
  • Small Boat Sailing Instructors are the key to keeping our center viable with new sailors. It takes 32 hours to complete the Small Boat Level 1 instructor course and approximately 24 hours annually to put on a Small Boat Sailing Course. Contact Tyler at education@rentonsailing.org

Future Fleet Upgrades

Over the Winter the board will consider the next upgrades to our fleet. Which boats would you or your family sail? Which boat would best serve the Mission of the Renton Sailing Center?

Thank you everyone who has contributed financially to Renton Sailing Center to get our double-handed small boat fleet up to standard. This was the 1st part of the long range plan "The Renton Sailing Vision" to improve our fleet to the highest standard.

So, from smallest to largest:
The RS Tera is RS's boat  for youth sailing (or light adults) beginner to advanced. The cockpit is self bailing so goodby bailing and it dosn't look like a bathtub.
The RS Zest is an improvement on the Laser Pico which sailing instructors love. It's super flexable, You can put 1-3 youth or adults on it and rig it with or without the jib. Members got to demo the boat at our August meeting and BBQ. Thanks Jake and West Coast Sailing.
RS Aero is RS's improvement on the Laser. It's a high performance single handed boat. All carbon fibere 75 pounds!
The RS Neo is just like the RS Aero except the hull is roto-moulded instead of carbon fibere. A little more robust for community sailing.
RS Cat 16.A safe fun multihull. Simple to rig. Safe with a masthead float to prevent inversion and reefing points when the breeze comes up but with go fast features like an asymmetrical and trap wires.
RS Venture. It's the same size as our Hunter 170 but comes as a keelboat with bottom paint so we can leave it on the mooring year round. It has an identical just larger rig as the RS Vision so the rigging learning curve is dialed down.
RS21. RS's answer to the J70 and VX One, or Melges 20. It's a fast small keelboat with half of it's weight in the bulb. It technically meets the requirements for teaching basic keelboat but takes quite a bit to get rigged. Tyler and John have been on a demo sail on one.
The Colgate 26 was designed around teaching Basic Keelboat. The rig is simple enough to get underway quickly, The instructor sits aft of the students with their own end of the mainsheet (think drivers ed car). Each student has their own station: grinder, main, helm. Although it's designed around teaching the boat is multi-purpose. It's a fun responsive boat to sail. Mike Jarvis uttered "it handles like a dinghy". It's pretty fast too. PHRF says it's a little faster than a J24 and has a symmetrical spinnaker.

Newport Shores Yacht Club Race

Happens basically every other Saturday and we would love to have the Ranger 24 there as much as possible. The Ranger 24 even won the Winter Series!

Mike Jarvis michaelj@rentonsailing.org usually skippers the boat but we are always looking for other skippers and when Mike can't be there and crew of all abilities are welcome.

Upcoming dates through the end of the year are:
  • October 5
  • October 19
  • November 2
  • November 16
  • December 7
Mark your Calendar now so you don't miss out.
