With much sadness we remember Turquoise Shaw....
Turquoise led the Illumination Awards committee and consequently we will be suspending our local IA program this year.  We plan to continue the momentous work she did to reignite this program next year. Please do represent the section and submit for 2024 Society IA this January.

Member Spotlight

This issue's member spotlight is on Tracy Van Auken!
When did you first hear about the IES and what prompted you to join?
I heard about the IES soon after starting my career and attended the meetings whenever I could. I joined to give back to IES for all of the education and networking it has provided for me over the years.

At what point in your career did you come to understand lighting was the career path for you?
I’ve always loved how lighting can change the whole feel of a space. With warm lighting a room can feel cozy and intimate. The exact same room can feel like a doctor’s waiting room with cool lighting.  In a building with many different areas and uses there’s a certain challenge to transitioning from one feel to another smoothly. I also like all the little aspects that can get overlooked but make a huge difference in the appearance. For example in a building with multiple tenants you would think that the orientation of the lighting from one suite to the next doesn’t matter as they’re different tenants. That’s true until your outside the building looking in and all the lights are going every which way giving the building itself a haphazard feel.

What is the best thing about the Society? Why do you continue to renew?
I value the networking and learning opportunities that the IES provides.

Past/Recent Projects
Projects I enjoyed working on the most include the new UNC REX Hospital in Holly Springs and the new Student Union Center at Campbell University. And as a big fan of Syracuse Basketball, being the lead electrical designer for the Carmelo K. Anthony Basketball Center was especially rewarding.

When not serving the advancement of the art and science of lighting, how do you like to spend your free time?
Watching the kids sporting events, 4 wheeling, and kayaking.

Project Feature

Plant Sciences Building

Project submitted by Leah Robinson, Sr. Lighting Designer, Pivotal Lighting Design
Client: NC State University
Project Description:
The recently constructed 185,000sf research facility on NC State's Centennial Campus includes an education wing with divisible conference area, open educational stair, and interactive displays in addition to the research and office spaces on the upper floors. Topping the building is a greenhouse with associated BSL-3 cleanroom facilities.
The architectural vision included a lot of plant-inspired materials and forms to show off the core function of the facility. Branching motifs were featured in prominent areas of the building.

Name at least one unique challenge associated with this project?
Getting the exact right channel and tape for the leaf wall to coordinate with the felt panels and accomplish 3-way intersections without loss of control signals for the color-changing tape was the biggest logistical challenge for the lighting design. Several small scale mockups were required to ensure the manufacturer and contractor understood what was required.

What factors contributed to the success of this project?
The project team was very proactive including DPR, the construction manager. They worked diligently to not only construct, but understand the intent of the design.
