Hemingway places sixth to become first high jump All-American in program history

RESULTS

ALLENDALE, Mich. -- Becca Hemingway (Perkiomenville, Pa./Boyertown) became the 26th All-American in Kutztown University women's track & field history Saturday afternoon with her sixth-place finish in the high jump at the NCAA Division II Outdoor Championships hosted by Grand Valley State University.

Hemingway is the first KU woman to achieve All-America honors in the event and gave the program its first All-American at the Outdoor Championships since Cristina Reimer in the 3,000-meter steeplechase back in 2011.

The Perkiomenville, Pa., native came into the championships tied for second in the nation after clearing a school-record 1.77m (5-9.75) in the season-opening West Chester University Tri-Meet back on March 27. Saturday's performance ended up being her second best in a season which also saw her win the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference title.

Down to her last of three attempts at the opening height of 1.65m (5-5), Hemingway got up and over the bar to stay in contention and got stronger as the bar went higher.

At 1.70m (5-7), Hemingway cleared on her second try and then at 1.73m (5-8) she made it over on her first go. Hemingway was assured All-America honors following her clearance at 1.73m as only seven competitors remained and that would be her finishing mark. The senior edged Fort Hays State's Alexandra Hart for sixth by virtue of her successful first jump at 1.73m. Hart cleared on her second.

Hemingway's result scored the Golden Bears three points, allowing KU to be classified tied for 46th in the team standings.

Top-seeded Chinenye Agina of Azusa Pacific claimed the high jump national championship by clearing 1.85m (6-0.75) and her team went on to win its first NCAA Division II women's outdoor team title.
