Coach’s Corner: Men’s basketball head coach Bernie Driscoll

KUTZTOWN, Pa. – Coach's corner is a weekly segment where fans get acquainted with Kutztown University head coaches. Our next coach in the spotlight is KU men's basketball coach Bernie Driscoll.

Driscoll is entering his 21st season at the helm of the Golden Bears program in 2020-21. He is the winningest coach in Kutztown history with 334 victories, ranking eighth in PSAC history in career wins. Driscoll has led the Golden Bears to a winning season in 15 of the last 18 seasons, and an appearance in the PSAC Tournament in 16 of the last 18, winning six PSAC East titles along the way.

Driscoll came to Kutztown from West Chester, where he served as the top assistant coach from 1987-2000. He received a bachelor's degree in biology from Dickinson College in 1977. While at Dickinson, he participated in varsity football and baseball and still holds most of the career receiving records at the school. He received a master's degree in education from St. Joseph's University in 1988.

What makes Kutztown University the destination to be a coach? "The men's basketball program at Kutztown University was the only basketball program I ever applied to be the head coach, while being a basketball assistant at West Chester University. I always thought that KU MBB was positioned to be a factor in the PSAC."

Favorite place on campus and/or in town? "My favorite place on campus is Keystone Arena."

Why did you get into coaching? "I really enjoyed playing athletics in high school and playing football and baseball in college. The year after I graduated from college, I interned as a teacher-coach at The Hill School in Pottstown, Pennsylvania. I coached varsity football, basketball and baseball and was hooked."

Favorite memory as a coach and athlete? "My favorite memory as a coach is taking two teams to the Sweet 16 game in the NCAA tournament."

What are any gameday rituals? "Trying to figure out what color khaki pants to wear with my blue blazer."

Favorite professional team and/or player? "I grew up in Kansas City and outside Philadelphia, so I love the Chiefs, Athletics, Eagles and Phillies."

If you weren't coaching, what would you be doing? "I would be teaching AP Chemistry and loving it."

Favorite thing(s) to do outside of coaching? "Sitting on the beach in Surf City, N.C., with my wife, children and grandkids, while reading a book."

Any sports heroes growing up? "Any member of the 1969 Super Bowl Champion Kansas City Chiefs."

Favorite movie and tv show? "Movies: Any Clint Eastwood movie. Any movie with Sean Connery as 007. All the others are imposters. TV: Perry Mason. ESPN 30 For 30."

What advice would you give prospective collegiate student-athletes? "The advice that I often find myself giving our student-athletes is that you will always be judged by the consistency and authenticity of your effort."

Any inspirational quotes you've heard that stays with you? "Success is peace of mind, which is a direct result of knowing you did your best to become the best that you are capable of becoming." Coach John Wooden.
