Coach’s Corner: Field Hockey’s Marci Scheuing

KUTZTOWN, Pa. – Coach's corner is a weekly segment where fans get acquainted with Kutztown University head coaches. Our next coach in the spotlight is KU field hockey coach Marci Scheuing.

Scheuing finished her seventh season as the Golden Bears head coach last fall, taking over the program in 2013. She has built a program that continues to contend on the national level, both on the field and in the classroom. There has been plenty of excitement surrounding KU over the last two seasons. Kutztown is coming off of one of its best seasons in program history. The 2019 Golden Bears made it to the Division II NCAA Final Four. The Maroon and Gold won just their second NCAA postseason game in program history, first since 1988. They also made it to the PSAC Championship game for the first time since 1988.  KU, which has had five-straight double-digit win seasons, finished the 2019 season ranked No. 4 in the final NFHCA National Poll. KU also celebrated its 50th season as a program in 2018.

Scheuing received a Bachelor of Science in mass communications with an emphasis in public relations from Mansfield in 2005, where she was recognized as a Presidential Scholar Athlete, and also received her Masters of Education in athletic administration at Millersville University in 2008.

What makes Kutztown University the destination to be a coach? "The people that I get to work with every day and the athletes that I get to coach make it a very special place to work. When you see so many coaches at KU have been here for a very long time, that gives you a good sense of what a special place it is."

Favorite place on campus and/or in town? "My favorite place on campus is when we play a night game in Andre Reed Stadium. The atmosphere is amazing! My favorite place in town is Tommy Boys. I know the pizza is amazing, but I'm a huge fan of their salads and my co-workers make fun of me for it."

Why did you get into coaching? "I actually got into coaching because of a bad coach that I had in high school. He made me hate a sport that I loved. I knew then that I wanted to coach and make my athletes feel good about themselves and continue to fall in love with their sport. I also want girls to be empowered to be an athlete and be proud of it. Any female athlete out there has had to listen to people tell them their sport doesn't matter or no one cares about them. I want them to know that I care and I will always fight for them."

Favorite memory as a coach and athlete? "My favorite memory as a coach is this past season when we made the NCAA Final Four. It was such an outstanding experience and one that I will cherish forever. As an athlete at Mansfield, my favorite memory was when we beat Shippensburg when they were ranked No. 1 in the country on their homecoming. Another favorite memory is when my coach, Diane, was yelling at me on the field for something, but I was on the bench next to her. She then yelled at me to get back in the game. She was truly the best!"

What are any gameday rituals? "My game day ritual is after the game is played. It does not matter if we win or lose, my daughters Reagan and McKinley, come running across the field to see me. It always brings things into perspective very quickly for me."

Favorite professional team and/or player? "Favorite teams - All Philly, all day. Phillies, Eagles, Flyers, Sixers. Favorite player of all time is probably Serena Williams. She is the very best at what she does. The absolute GOAT. She is also a mom and that makes her even more inspiring."

If you weren't coaching, what would you be doing? "I would probably be a Sports Information Director. That is what I was doing before I got into coaching full-time. I just love sports. I can't imagine doing anything else."

Favorite thing(s) to do outside of coaching? "I love to run and hang out with my family."

Any sports heroes growing up? "Pat Summitt. Her intensity and drive is unmatched."

Favorite movie and tv show? "Movie – The Hunger Games series, and TV Shows – Homeland and Jack Ryan."

What advice would you give prospective collegiate student-athletes? "This is your process. Make the decisions that are going to make YOU happy. No one else."

Any inspirational quotes you've heard that stays with you? "It's a heck of a start, being able to recognize what makes you happy."
