During Rob Phenicie's seven years in Pocatello he has coached some of the best Idaho State players in program history. Phenicie enters his fifth year as head coach after being hired in March of 2017. Prior to being named head coach he was the wide receivers coach and Assistant Head Coach for the Offense in 2015 and 2016.

In his first year as head coach, the Bengals knocked off Nevada, 30-28, giving the program their first win over an FBS team in 27 tries. Phenicie also coached four first-team all-conference players in James Madison, Mitch Gueller, Skyler Phillips and Mario Jenkins.  The four wins in 2017 was the third most wins by a Bengal team since 2005.

The Bengals continued their improvement under Phenicie in year two, finishing the season with a 6-5 record. This was only the fifth time since 2000 that an Idaho State football team finished with a .500 record or better. In 2018, the Bengals also had 14 players earn all-conference honors. The wide receiver duo of Mitch Gueller and Michael Dean each earned first and second-team all-conference. Gueller finished the year with 1,259 receiving yards, the third-best single season mark in program history.

Dean had 863 yards receiving in 2018 on 49 receptions. He scored 10 touchdowns and averaged 78.5 yards a game. He had a career-high 210 receiving yards Liberty. The 10 touchdowns ties for fifth with other Bengals.

In 2019, Gueller became the programs all-time leading receiver as he finished his career with 3,249 receiving yards. Michael Dean finished his career as the fifth all-time leading receiver with 2,567 yards.

Phenicie came to Idaho State after spending five years at UNLV, two as the offensive coordinator, three as the quarterbacks coach and two as the tight ends coach.

Phenicie is no stranger to the Big Sky Conference. Prior to going to UNLV he worked as the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at Montana from 2003-09 and from 2000-02 he was the wide receivers coach and recruiting coordinator at Wyoming before being named Co-offensive coordinator for one season.

During his time in Missoula, he guided the Montana offense to three appearances in the FCS National Championship game (2004, 2008 and 2009), and the team made the playoffs every year. In 2006, he was awarded the Mike Campbell Award for the top assistant coach in FCS football. Montana appeared in 18 playoff games during his time as the offensive coordinator.

Phenicie coached the quarterbacks and wide receivers at Cal State Northrdige from 1997-98 and at L.A. Valley from 1992-96.  Phenicie and his wife Jennifer have one daughter.
