I’m excited for the future. Starting out as an accountant, I always knew I wanted to be in retail, even since coming here at 13. House Speaker Murrell Smith faces new challenges It is an honor to be recognized by my community in the Best of Sumter 2022 publication. As your state representative in District 67 and now House speaker, I have experienced the highs and lows of being an elected official. But never in my wildest dreams did I expect to be chosen by my fellow House members for what many believe is the most influential position in state government, speaker of the House of Representatives. It is the honor of a lifetime and could not have been achieved without the support and backing of the great people of Sumter County. For 20 years, the residents of our community have given me the privilege of representing them on issues that impact our collective future. My family and I cannot thank you enough. So how did this happen? How did a small-town local attorney become the speaker of the House of Representatives? The answer is simple … faith, family and friends. With an unwavering commitment to my faith and the support of my amazing family and friends, I have been able to navigate the tricky politics and problems that accompany elected office. I try to make good, common-sense decisions that always put Sumter County and the state of South Carolina first. As Speaker, it is my pledge that I will continue to operate in that same manner. But first, there is the completion of my job as chairman of the Ways and Means Committee. 8

We are writing a budget that improves education, reduces taxes, invests in state and local infrastructure and attracts new industry while supporting existing business and protecting our environment. We are expanding broadband throughout the state, improving our water and sewer sytems and appropriating a billion dollars towards our roads. During my time as chairman, we have cut frivolous spending and reduced the size and scope of government. We have placed a priority on keeping taxes low and I believe that the 2022-2023 state budget will do the same by reducing income tax rates. The annual appropriation bill and review process should be completed by the end of June. As an attorney at the Smith Robinson Law Firm, I am keenly aware of how important it is to have the support of one’s co-workers. For that reason, I am profoundly grateful to my fellow attorneys, staff and friends at the law firm for allowing me the time to do my “other” job. Most importantly, words cannot express the appreciation I have for my wife, Macaulay, and our children, Bee and Murrell III. Dental Team is a family ready to serve yours Like many of Sumter’s professionals, R. Capers Lee was inspired by another local dentist, Dr. Mutt Bozard, who was not only his dentist but his Boy Scout leader as well. Lee remembers him as a kind, caring person who lived his life in an exemplary manner and hopes to emulate those qualities while also reflecting his Christian values in his practice at The Dental Team of Sumter. Dr. Lee is a graduate of the University of South Carolina and attended dental school at the Medical University of South Carolina. He graduated in 1986 and recently completed his 36th year of dentistry. Recently, Dr. Lee’s oldest son, Dr. Hunter Lee, joined the practice after graduating from MUSC in 2016. He served in the U.S. Air Force for five years and recently departed to join “our team.” “We are delighted that Dr. Hunter has joined us and can’t wait to see what God has in store for our practice,” he said about his son. Dr. Lee met a fellow dentist, Danny Gardner, on a dove shoot in 2003. Gardner is a dentist in Charleston and an avid supporter of foreign and domestic mission work. Gardner mentioned taking a trip to Venezuela in the spring, and the rest, as is said, is history. Dr. Lee contacted Dr. Bill Sasser of Charleston, a veteran servant with the Christian Medical Dental Association, and away they went. Dr. Lee has been on nearly 30 mission trips abroad with Dr. Sasser and the CMDA, serving in Peru, Venezuela, Trinidad, Ecuador and, his favorite, Honduras. “Having been in many third-world countries, I’ve
realized that almost all American dental offices are excellent compared to the rest of the world,” he said. At Dental Team of Sumter, we try to separate ourselves serving patients as well as we possibly can by implementing the “Golden Rule". Who wouldn’t want a dentist and staff to do unto others as you would have them do unto you? This type of mindset has proven to be noticed as The Dental Team has been voted Best of Sumter many times, and he has been chosen many times by peers as one of the Top Dentistst in the Midlands. Emanuel Willis: Faithful servant to family, church and community When The Sumter Item informed Dr. Willis that he had won Sumter’s Best Podiatrist, it was a very special day for him. It gave him a special feeling of gratitude for his hometown. Dr. Willis was born and raised in Sumter. He attended Alice Drive Elementary and Alice Drive Middle schools. He graduated from Sumter High School in 1976. Dr. Willis always had two goals in his young life: to have a career in medicine and to serve his community. He has always had a great love for Sumter and its people because he has always felt loved by them. Whether it was his neighborhood “out Broad,” his many relatives or his church family at St. James United Church (on Broad Street), he always felt supported and encouraged. He attended the University of South Carolina and majored in biology, and this was the start of achieving his goals. After graduating from Carolina, he attended the William M. Scholl College of Podiatry in Chicago, Illinois, where he graduated and received a commission in the Army. While in the Army, he completed his residency in Honolulu, Hawaii, at Tripler Army Medical Center. When Dr. Willis became the civilian podiatrist at Fort Jackson in Columbia, his goals were coming closer into 92

view. He moved back to Sumter with his wife, Janice, and their four daughters. This was the fulfillment of one of his goals. In 1999, he joined Sumter Medical Specialist Practice, and five years later he opened SUMTER PODIATRY SERVICES, PA in Hardee Cove. After 18 years, he is still in that location. Dr. Willis works in a profession he loves serving people in a community he loves. He feels this is a blessing, and he does not take It lightly. He is an enthusiastic Christian, and he knows God has always guided his life, he just had to develop the discernment to follow Him. When he began to follow the path God chose for him, it led him to his profession, back to his community and back to the church of his childhood. It is his daily prayer to serve all three faithfully. So, when you come through the doors of SUMTER PODIATRY SERVICES, know that we are grateful for the opportunity to serve you and that Dr. Willis will take care of you as if you are a member of his family. Do I still have to wear a mask? What about kids? BY THE ASSOCIATED PRESS The government's new guidance on masks for vaccinated people has left some Americans confused and sent businesses and states scrambling to adjust their rules. Target and CVS on Monday became the latest retailers to say vaccinated shoppers and workers don't have to wear masks in stores. New York said it will adopt the new mask advice this week, while California said it
will wait a month. About 123 million Americans — 37% of the population — are fully vaccinated against coronavirus, and more than 157 million, or 47%, have received at least one dose.
WHAT'S THE NEW ADVICE? The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention last week said people who are fully vaccinated no longer need to wear a mask indoors or outdoors and can stop social distancing in
most places. Fully vaccinated means two weeks after the second dose of the Pfizer or Moderna COVID-19 vaccine, or two weeks after the one-dose Johnson & Johnson shot. "If you are vaccinated, we are saying you are safe, you can take off your mask, and you are not at risk of severe disease or hospitalization from COVID-19," Dr. Rochelle Walensky, the CDC director, said on "Fox News Sunday."

Parents of children in public school must fill out a form to opt their children out. The form developed by the state Department of Health and Environmental Control is available for Sumter School District students at www.sumterschools.net.. It can also be downloaded from DHEC’s website at https://bit.ly/3eYb7az https://bit.ly/3eYb7az. A separate form must be filled out for each child. The governor’s order also limits local governments from issuing mask ordinances based on his prior emergency declarations related to the COVID19 pandemic. Those governments will have to find justification for such mask rules within their own ordinances.

BY THE ASSOCIATED PRESS The government's new guidance on masks for vaccinated people has left some Americans confused and sent businesses and states scrambling to adjust their rules. Target and CVS on Monday became the latest retailers to say vaccinated shoppers and workers don't have to wear masks in stores. New York said it will adopt the new mask advice this week, while California said it

WHAT'S THE NEW ADVICE? The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention last week said people who are fully vaccinated no longer need to wear a mask indoors or outdoors and can stop social distancing in
most places. Fully vaccinated means two weeks after the second dose of the Pfizer or Moderna COVID-19 vaccine, or two weeks after the one-dose Johnson & Johnson shot. "If you are vaccinated, we are saying you are safe, you can take off your mask, and you are not at risk of severe disease or hospitalization from COVID-19," Dr. Rochelle Walensky, the CDC director, said on "Fox News Sunday."

Gov. McMaster’s order allows students to opt out of mask use FROM STAFF REPORTS South Carolina Gov. Henry McMaster’s executive order on May 11 allows parents to opt their children out of wearing masks in public schools because of widespread coronavirus vaccine access for adults in South Carolina. Parents of children in public school must fill out a form to opt their children out. The form developed by the state Department of Health and Environmental Control is available for Sumter School District students at www.sumterschools.net. It can also be downloaded from DHEC’s website at https://bit.ly/3eYb7az. A separate form must be filled out for each child. The governor’s order also limits local governments from issuing mask ordinances based on his prior emergency declarations related to the COVID19 pandemic. Those governments will have to find justification for such mask rules within their own ordinances.

In the time that The Sumter Item has done the Best of Sumter competition, Simpson Hardware has won Best Locally Owned Business twice (including this year), Best Sporting Goods (including this year), Best Shoes (including this year), Best Fishing (including this year), Best Fitness (including this year), Best Outdoor Furniture (including this year), Best Paint (including this year), Best Guns, Best Hardware and Best Propane. Simpson’s owes any success to our loyal, wonderful customers and talented, helpful associates. We are so grateful! Over the years, Simpson’s has grown to four stores in Sumter and Manning with over 140 associates. Simpson Hardware Co. was founded in 1951 by the late Carl Simpson Jr. with the purchase of a store in Camden and later in Hartsville. Several years later, Mr. Simpson sold both stores, moved to Sumter and purchased Boyle Hardware. That store was opened under the Simpson Hardware name on West Liberty Street in 1961 and became the first ACE Hardware store in South Carolina. After one move several blocks away and renovations just this past year, the original Simpson Hardware remains on Liberty Street. 106
In 1964, a second location opened at Palmetto Plaza Shopping Center on Guignard Drive under the guidance of Carl Simpson III. That store expanded rapidly and moved twice within the shopping center. With growth, this basic hardware store became widely known for its sporting goods and lawn and garden departments. However, tragedy struck on April 9, 2000, when that location burned to the ground. After several temporary moves, Simpson Plaza Hardware opened in its new building on Wesmark Boulevard in 2002. The other two stores in the company are located on Pinewood Road in Sumter and North Brooks Street in Manning. Each has undergone major renovations in the last nine years. Over the years, through pandemic, floods, and hurricanes, Simpson’s has remained open serving the community with essential and nonessential items alike. In the coming years, the Simpson Hardware company plans to grow its online presence and expand beyond four stores. We currently have varying and new products in fishing, sporting goods, grilling, clothing, gifts, footwear, sunglasses, paint and more. We welcome you to visit any and all locations of this family owned local store.
