JSSA 2017 ANNUAL REPORT | 4
JSSA’s mission is to empower individuals and families to achieve well-being across their lifespan.

DEAR FRIEND,

One year ago, JSSA embarked on a strategic planning process that resulted in, among other things, a new mission for the agency: JSSA empowers individuals and families to achieve well-being across their lifespan.

In other words, our clinicians and professional staff strive to help children, adolescents, adults, and seniors improve their quality of life in the areas where they are struggling. As a multiservice organization, the ways that we empower our clients differ across each of our programs. In Specialized Employment, for example, it may be self-sufficiency, while in Senior Services, it is independence and the preservation of dignity for older adults.

When we implemented our strategic plan in 2017, our primary goals included continuing to improve care, expanding our services to a broader population, and ensuring the long-term viability and relevance of JSSA as an organization. We’ve spent this past year looking top to bottom at ways we can align ourselves with our strategy for future success, and we are excited about the initiatives we launched in 2017:

• Transformation of our Montrose Road building to create a center for comprehensive senior care that will enable us to serve 2,000 additional clients each year, increase JSSA staff by 30, and save more than $500,000 annually in rental costs

• Reorganization of our mental health team to improve access to service, to prioritize clients with the most acute needs, and to more accurately measure the impact of our efforts

Amidst these changes, the agency continued to reach new milestones and receive impressive accolades this past year:

• JSSA earned the highest rating from Charity Navigator for the 9th year in a row, an honor shared by only 2% of nonprofits across the country

• Home Care Pulse named Premier Homecare “Employer of Choice” based on anonymous feedback of staff at all different levels

• AIMS, a new innovative model of care that partners JSSA’s care management services with physician practices, resulted in zero unplanned hospitalizations for high-risk seniors getting home-based care

• Specialized Employment Services received the “Provider of the Year” award from Maryland Works, Inc.

As we look to 2018, our focus remains steady on our mission: empowering individuals and families to achieve well-being. We will continue developing innovative programs and collaborating with other organizations in the community, as well as the broader healthcare system, thanks to the generous support of our donors and the unwavering dedication of our staff, volunteers, and partners.

Sincerely,

Premier’s Partners In Care (PIC) Program is a unique collaboration between five senior care-related organizations located at Homecrest House, an independent senior living community in Silver Spring. The focus of PIC is to stabilize the residents of the community by taking a proactive, whole person approach to managing their health care needs, therefore avoiding hospital admissions, readmissions, and possible evictions. In FY17 the program was awarded a Capacity Building Grant by the Health Initiatives Foundation.

Success stories

Premier Homecare received the 2017 Best of Home Care “Employer of Choice” award from Home Care Pulse, an independent satisfaction research firm. This award exemplifies our dedication to providing our employees with a positive work experience, such as providing ongoing training for our caregiving staff. By investing in our employees, we continue to elevate the quality of our service.

“Premier’s services have been such a lifesaver. My dad is in his 80s and would often forget to take all of his pills at the correct times. Now he has a patient and loving caregiver who administers all of my father’s medication and provides him with companionship, which in turn provides me peace of mind.”

Among those older adults last year were 469 local men and woman who survived the Holocaust. JSSA’s Holocaust Survivor Program services are funded by grants from the Conference on Jewish Material Claims Against Germany, funds from the Harry and Jeanette Weinberg Holocaust Survivor Emergency Assistance Fund (administered by the Claims Conference); assistance from The Jewish Federation of North America and The Jewish Federation of Greater Washington; and donations from the Jewish community of Greater Washington, the State of Maryland, and the Commonwealth of Virginia.

Services include:

n Care management

n Meals on Wheels n Counseling and support groups

n Social and educational programs n Financial assistance n Escorted transportation

Unique pro bono programs

Over the years, JSSA has formed partnerships with area organizations to meet the medical needs of our Holocaust survivor clients in safe and welcoming environments.

n Dental care provided by the Alpha Omega International Dental Fraternity (Washington, DC Chapter) and the Maimonides Dental Society of Greater Washington

n Vision care led by local optometrist Dr. Michael Berenhaus

n Hearing aids supplied, fitted, and adjusted through a partnership with the University of Maryland Department of Hearing and Speech Sciences

Success Stories

JSSA launched a new partnership in 2017 with a primary care geriatric practice that makes house calls in the community to provide care management to at-risk seniors and their caregivers. Funded by the Weinberg Foundation, Ambulatory Integration of the Medical and Social (AIMS) helps seniors address psychosocial and environmental issues that are not covered by the traditional medical system and resulted in zero hospital admissions. Due to our success with AIMS, and the success of our partners Rush Medical Center and Aging Care Connections in Chicago, this model of care is being replicated in 8-10 communities across the country.

“Because of JSSA, my 91-year-old mother has come to a place of a little more peace than she has ever had. You talk to her, make sure that she receives her benefits, make sure she gets where she needs to go, and give her the human honor that is due to her both as a survivor and a person. For this, not only is she grateful but the whole family is as well.”

“My husband had been receiving hospice care elsewhere before I made the switch to JSSA, and coming here made all the difference for Stanley. I was especially impressed with our nurses and their help with his trach collar, dressing changes, and medications. I also appreciated Dr. Westerman’s personal visits and the emotional support I received from the hospice social worker. Despite being a complicated patient, JSSA made sure my husband was always well cared for.”

COMMUNITY OUTREACH

JSSA partnerships within the community allow us to make an impact in the lives of even more individuals and families. Our Synagogue Liaison Program embeds JSSA clinicians in local congregations to offer short-term, on-site counseling for congregants; ongoing support for clergy and staff; and workshops for the congregational community.

Elderly and infirm individuals without a synagogue affiliation can still experience pastoral care and spiritual guidance through JSSA’s Jewish Chaplaincy Services. Our chaplains serve as Jewish resources for residents in nursing homes, assisted living facilities, and hospitals, offering meaningful programming and prayer leadership on Shabbat and other holidays.

Give-a-Gift is a seasonal program that provides families of all faiths with gift cards to purchase what they really need and want for the winter holidays. Gift cards allow us to preserve the confidentiality of our clients while affording recipients the dignity of choosing what is most important to them during this gift-giving season, such as holiday food, warm winter clothing, toys for their children, or special items that will make their lives more comfortable throughout the year.

VOLUNTEERING

Nearly 1,100 volunteers provided JSSA 18,696 hours of service in fiscal year 2017. Their invaluable assistance to the agency and our programs included healthy meal deliveries, social support for Holocaust survivors and other older adults, companionship for JSSA Hospice and Transitions patients, and office support.

SPRING BENEFIT

Our partnership with The Jewish Federation of Greater Washington makes it possible for JSSA to touch the lives of so many individuals and families in our community who are struggling to achieve well-being. We are indebted to the Federation’s leaders, staff, and donors for their commitment to JSSA.

JSSA hosted its annual spring benefit, “A Mindful Journey,” on May 7, 2017 at the Hilton McLean Tysons Corner. The celebratory and inspiring night featured an emotional video presentation highlighting several extraordinary JSSA clients, a moving acceptance speech from Cherie Artz after receiving the Joseph Ottenstein Award for Community Leadership, and Patrick J. Kennedy’s impassioned keynote about mental health and stigma. The evening’s co-chairs were Susan and Jimmy Pittleman, Sherie Silverman, and Hilary Dworkin and Norman Freidkin.
