The Trustees of the International Society for the History of the Map thank all those who participated in the ISHMap biennial symposium held virtually 12-13 June 2020. Keynote speaker Dr. Beatriz Jaguaribe opened the conference, which was held online rather than São Paulo, Brazil, during the COVID-19 health crisis.

PROGRAM SCHEDULE AND TIMING

The Symposium took place on June 12 – 13, with live synchronous) presentations, unless otherwise indicated. Sessions are scheduled between 10:30 am – 5:00 pm (EST US), to facilitate participation in the Americas, Europe, Africa and the Middle East. We regret the inconvenient timing for participants in Pacific time zones.

Time Zones – San Francisco to Tokyo (via Europe)

Beatriz Jaguaribe (Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro, School of Communications) will open the conference on Friday, June 12 at 10:30 AM EST with a Keynote presentation, “Mapping and Erasures: cartography and the imaginaries of the modern nation in Brazil.”

The Society’s annual general meeting will take place on Saturday, June 13. All ISHMap members are invited to attend and participate in the meeting, Trustees for 2020-2021 will be elected in the meeting.


The Call for Papers closed on October 31, 2019, and invitations to participate were issued in November 2019. ISHMap is particularly delighted at the positive response, including several proposals that focus on ‘breaking boundaries,’ both theoretically and in practice.  We anticipate discussion of community map use and mapmaking, the roles of archives and collections in scholarly production, the use of new technologies to work with historical maps, and new tools for individual and collective analysis.

INTENDED LOCATION:
The Society hopes to organize a follow-up event with the original venue, the Biblioteca Mario Andrade in São Paulo, Brazil.

São Paulo is a world city with a storied history, architectural treasures, rich cultural institutions, vibrant and globally recognized cuisine, and accessible sites. As a bonus, it is an eminently walkable city. International participants will likely arrive at one of three airports, each of which offers public and private transportation into the heart of the city.  

The 2020 ISHMap symposium is underwritten by the Society and local partners. We do not anticipate charging a registration fee.
