Spirit Airlines Earns Highest-Rated Low-Fare Carrier in the World for Cleanliness and Safety During the Travel Journey

02/09/2021

The Airline Passenger Experience Association (APEX) and SimpliFlying recognized Spirit Airlines with certified Platinum status in new health safety audit.

MIRAMAR, Fla., Feb. 9, 2021Spirit Airlines (NYSE: SAVE) was awarded Platinum status by the Airline Passenger Experience Association (APEX) Health Safety initiative powered by SimpliFlying for the airline’s efforts in ensuring the highest standards of cleanliness and sanitization. The certification recognizes Spirit for going above and beyond the required and truly investing in health and safety for Guests and Team Members.

APEX, the largest non-profit airline association in the world dedicated entirely to the passenger experience, worked with SimpliFlying to develop a science-based global standard for health and safety across the aviation industry. Certification involves a 58-point checklist covering 10 categories including testing, on-the-ground procedures and in-flight measures to increase Guest safety throughout their journey.

“The health and safety of our Guests and Team Members is our top priority,” said John Bendoraitis, Spirit Airlines Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer. “We’re proud to receive this certification because we want our Guests to feel comfortable knowing we’re working around the clock to make sure every flight meets our commitment to Safe Travels.”

Twelve airlines from six continents have completed the global certification program after undergoing the audit and review process validated by SimpliFlying. APEX expects the majority of participating airlines to reach Gold status as the process continues, which requires a minimum of 200 points scored on the audit. Achieving a Platinum rating requires airlines to score another 100 points beyond the Gold level.

“With its focus on Guest well-being, Spirit Airlines rose to become the highest-rated low-fare carrier in the world by continuously investing more in their customers during this pandemic,” said APEX CEO Dr. Joe Leader. “Spirit’s initiatives for automated self-bag drops, biometric photo matching, continued installation of roomier passenger class seats, and end-to-end COVID-19 wellness service additions underlined the airline’s non-stop ‘invest in the guest’ philosophy.”

Spirit’s commitment to Safe Travels includes a multi-layered safety approach that requires face coverings, and all Guests must complete a health and safety acknowledgement prior to boarding the aircraft. Every plane in our Fit Fleet® uses state-of-the-art, high-efficiency particulate air (HEPA) filters that capture 99.97% of particles and filter the air for contaminants every 3 minutes.

Between each flight, enhanced cleaning procedures focus on high-touch areas such as tray tables and armrests. Spirit also uses two EPA-registered fogging treatments. The first applies a safe, high-grade disinfectant that’s effective against coronaviruses. The second uses an antimicrobial product that forms an invisible barrier on all surfaces that kills bacteria and viruses on contact for 30 days.
