Alaysia received her Ph.D. in Human Development and Family Science—with a concentration in social inequality and statistics—from the University of Missouri-Columbia in 2022. Her research advances social justice, antiracism, and public health agendas by explicating the consequences of living in a racialized society. Her first line of research investigates the correlates and consequences of exposure to racial, ethnic, and phenotypic-related discrimination (e.g., colorism). Her second line of research explores the role that family, contextual, and sociocultural factors play in influencing romantic relationship quality and stability. Lastly, her third line of research involves advanced quantitative methods and quantitative criticalism. The overall goal of her work is to improve the lives of individuals of color and her research has been published in academic and non-academic outlets including the Harvard Business Review, Journal of Adolescent Health, and Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. She has also collaborated with private and non-profit organizations—such as Microsoft, The Recording Academy, and Educational Testing Services—to advance social equity. As a postdoctoral scholar, Alaysia plans to continue developing innovative ways to conceptualize and measure the implications of race and ethnicity. She also intends to integrate her research with more advanced quantitative methods such as machine learning and casual inference techniques to establish a more definitive link between race-related stressors, interpersonal processes, and health.
