A message from the Johns Hopkins Medicine Office of Diversity, Inclusion and Health Equity

A message to the Johns Hopkins Medicine community

March is Women’s History Month, a time to recognize the immeasurable contributions of women and the vital role they have played in American history. We are reminded of the strength of women who fought for their rights and paved the way for those who are still pushing boundaries today. The National Women’s History Alliance has chosen Women Who Advocate for Equity, Diversity and Inclusion as this year’s theme for Women’s History Month. Across our institution, women have played a crucial role in promoting equity and advancing scientific research, clinical care, education and health care administration.

In 1896, Florence Sabin enrolled in the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. After graduating, she completed an internship at The Johns Hopkins Hospital and a fellowship in the anatomy department, and then she became Johns Hopkins’ first woman professor (in histology). In the spirit of Sabin’s tenacity, the Office of Diversity, Inclusion and Health Equity celebrates the brilliant and resilient women at Johns Hopkins Medicine. This month, we’ll feature women at various levels of leadership throughout the health system and school of medicine. Look for announcements on JHM Link.

We are also excited to introduce this year’s Women's History Month Achievers Award winners: Diane Brown, senior research nurse, the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, and Allison Fernandez, pediatric anesthesiologist, Johns Hopkins All Children’s Hospital. We applaud these amazing women who exemplify excellence and exhibit our core values while working to improve their communities. We encourage you to download and use a virtual background throughout the month to show your support of women.

Thank you for joining us in celebrating women's history -- and the Johns Hopkins women who are making history every day.
