Are you eligible for our services

Her Justice provides free legal help to women living in poverty in New York City. We evaluate each request for legal assistance on an individual basis. Our general criteria are set out below. We weigh many factors and will take extraordinary circumstances into consideration when determining a woman’s financial eligibility for our help. If in doubt contact us.

Do you identify as a woman? If yes, you may be eligible for free legal help.
Have a legal matter? An issue or problem relating to family, divorce or immigration law.
Do you live here? The Bronx, Brooklyn, Manhattan, Queens or Staten Island.
Meet income guidelines? Is your annual household income at or below 200% of the Federal Poverty Level Guidelines.

In this opinion piece, published in amNewYork, Her Justice Executive Director Amy Barasch Esq. weighs in on how New York City can do better for migrants and all of us. The op-ed breaks down what the city’s current plan gets right, where it goes wrong, and how we can right the course with smart solutions.

City Limits Opinion: Do We Really Support Children?

In this opinion piece, published in City Limits, Her Justice Director of Policy Rachel Braunstein outlines the importance of NY’s child support system, including how more efficient processes and better access could combat childhood poverty. 

“While states like New York emphasize supporting vulnerable women and children as a priority, there has been too little focus on the need to improve the child support system to do so—especially within family courts. Instead, these courts—which handle hundreds of thousands of cases per year—have been historically neglected.”

Her Justice Policy Research Cited in Report on the Impact of COVID-19 on NY Family Court

Her Justice contributed to and was cited in a report on the consequences of the pandemic on the NYC Family Court. The report, led by the Fund for Modern Courts and the New York City Bar Association, details the dire need for reform as well as substantive recommendations for how to improve and modernize the system.

In testimony to the New York State Bar Association’s President’s Committee on Access to Justice and Committee on Legal Aid, Her Justice Supervising Attorney Anna Ognibene outlines barriers to justice within the New York City Family Court system, including court closures and severe case delays during the pandemic, plus recommendations for improving the system for all.
