I just heard about this fascinating custom amongst Jews from the community of Djerba that they would give names to Kohanim that were specifically "fish"-related as a way of deterring an evil eye. Do you know how I can access a list of such names and what those names mean (i.e. which particular type of fish each name refers to)?

Thank you so much. This article actually helped me a lot.

The classic study on this topic - which includes a list of representative names (including those related to khamsa) is by the late Hayim Ze'ev Hirscherrg, published in 1967 - I attach a copy (I've written on the fish and khamsa in the context of Jewish magic - not necessarily names).

Shalom, please reattach a copy of the study, so that we can all see it.  (Or at least, I'd like to.)

I forgot to follow up with my colleagues on this email list. Basically, thanks to Victor Hayoun and Shalom Sabar I came up with the following examples:
Masculine names like Hayuta/Hauita ("fish" in some North African dialects of Arabic, although in Aramaic it means "snake"), Manani ("merou" or "grouper" fish, possibly also related to nun), Bugid ("striped red mullet"), Hadir ("torpedo fish"), Karutz ("bass"), Uzifa, Wurgana, and feminine names like Shelbia (“Salema porgy”), Svirsa, Murgana, Manana (feminized form of Manani), and Baharia (“mermaid”).
This information was included in my weekly column on synonyms in the Hebrew language last week: https://ohr.edu/this_week/whats_in_a_word/9390 if you are interested in subscribing to my weekly newsletter, please let me know and I'll your email address.
