Cortex is currently a CNCF Sandbox project which joined more than an year ago. Over the last year we've grown as a project and community and we would like to be considered to move into incubating stage.

We are currently scheduling for December and beyond, is there a preferred time that you'd like to present an incubating review?

@amye Anytime after December 10th should be fine, thanks!

RFC @cncf/toc for any due diligence volunteers

This may have to wait until after kubecon / early next year to be honest

@amye Just a gentle reminder now that Kubecon has now died down :) Could you let us know tentative dates when this could be scheduled?

Currently working with TOC to outline priorities for next year, suggest getting a member of the TOC for due diligence as next steps.

Next step for this will be a recommendation by SIG Observability once that SIG is up and running cc @halcyondude

SIG o11y reviewed the due dilligence document linked at https://docs.google.com/document/d/1mCS5C9wQxEyFQrknaY4nFvgWR34ZKUgFH7I2osMhbIY/edit and reached consensus as follows: "SIG o11y accepts the Cortex due diligence document, will submit it to CNCF TOC for further discussion, and suggest moving Cortex to incubation stage" as documented in https://docs.google.com/document/d/1_QoF-njScSuGFI3Ge5zu-G8SbL6scQ8AzT1hq57bRoQ/edit# .

I will conduct the DD for Cortex. Will reach out with more details once I have reviewed the DD

I have completed the DD for Cortex. Here are my takeaways:

  • the project is a great addition to the CNCF ecosystem and has a healthy governance and contributor base
  • overall the project meets the incubation criteria

A few points I would like more clarity on:

  • a well-defined roadmap
  • seems like some of the details presented for the project are outdated (e.g. introduction of single-binary mode and indexed documentation). It might be the case that the details were filled for the sandbox integration, but would be good to have updated information
  • a clear understanding on the dependency introduced around issue reporting with systems from Weaveworks and Grafana Labs

I have outlined these points on the DD doc as well. Once I have more details on the above, I am happy to proceed to the next step.

Hi Katie, thanks for the feedback! We're currently working on your feedback: removing dependency on 2 companies and adding a public roadmap.

I will update here once both the changes are made.

Hi Katie, we've made the changes requested. They are good suggestions! I've also started reaching out to potential end-users to encourage them to participate in the release process.

Please let us know if you have any more questions or suggestions!

Amazing! Thank you for introducing the changes so promptly.

At this stage I am happy to move forward with the process and open the public comment period for Cortex: https://lists.cncf.io/g/cncf-toc/message/4961
