May 19 Cultural Leadership Breakfast: Melanie Adams, Anacostia Museum

Melanie A. Adams, director of the Smithsonian’s Anacostia Community Museum since 2019, will speak at The Georgetowner’s next Cultural Leadership Breakfast, on Thursday, May 19. Admission to the event, from 8 to 9:30 a.m. at the Tabard Inn, 1739 N St. NW, is $30, payable in advance via Eventbrite.
Dr. Adams spent 11 years at the Missouri Historical Society, overseeing hundreds of St. Louis community programs annually. In 2016, she moved to the Minnesota Historical Society as deputy director for learning initiatives, managing 26 historic sites and museums around the state. Her doctorate in educational leadership and policy studies is from the University of Missouri–St. Louis.
Founded in 1967 in the Southeast D.C. neighborhood for which it is named, the Anacostia Community Museum pioneered a community-centered approach to curation and programming. At the breakfast, Dr. Adams will describe how the museum has evolved while staying true to its mission — now more important than ever — and highlight the current special exhibition “Food for the People: Eating and Activism in Greater Washington.”
Dr. Adams will be the 42nd speaker in The Georgetowner’s Cultural Leadership Breakfast Series, currently sponsored by Long & Foster and Balfour Senior Living.
