Update: New Microfilm Readers

We’re happy to announce the unveiling of two new ScanPro Microfilm readers, available on the 2nd Floor behind the Reference Desk. They are in the same place as the previous machines, and can also read microfiche, as well as other formats.

Updates: The new machines offer better cameras, with an increase in image clarity, illumination, sharpness, and visibility. The connection to the PC is improved, which will improve general speed and utility. As before, the machines offer the ability to zoom in, brighten/darken a specific area of the page (SpotEdit), select a specific area to save (CustomCrop), add multiple pages into a single PDF document, and so much more!

Other Notes:

The readers are set by default to load a 35mm roll of microfilm – we can help show you how to adjust for 16mm roll or other formats.

For privacy, a script is run weekly auto-deleting the files in the My Scans directory on the desktop, where files are saved. Please do not try to delete the directory yourself – if you have questions about the above, just reach out! We’re happy to discuss further.

Any CUNY affiliate is welcome to use these readers – simply ask for a Guest Login at the Circulation Desk so you can log into the computer.

Seeking Help with Microfilm?

We understand these machines might appear daunting, so we encourage you to reach out anytime during Reference Desk hours –
