This new FWPA research report introduces biased position testing as a cost-effective and efficient method for the verification of structural softwood timber properties. This innovative approach can unlock significant cost savings and improved efficiency whilst maintaining rigorous verification of structural softwood timber strength and stiffness properties. The project was led by Jon Shanks, Director of TimberED Services and Associate Professor in Timber Engineering at University of Tasmania and was conducted in collaboration with University of South Australia. Australian and European research is advancing towards a solution for the forest damage caused by giant pine scale (GPS). GPS threatens Pinus radiata, comprising 75% of Australia’s softwood plantations, and other conifers like spruce, cedar, and fir. Originating from Greece and Turkey, GPS was found in Australia in 2014, posing a significant economic threat to the timber industry. Read all about how this FWPA supported research project aims to boost our understanding of the effectiveness of the various available biological control strategies: https://lnkd.in/dWssmn6e

We congratulate Director of the National Centre for Timber Durability and Design Life, Tripti Singh, who was invited by the American Wood Protection Association to share her insights around "Harmonising Timber Circularity: A Holistic Approach to Sustainable Wood Resources Management in Australia."
Being invited by AWPA (American Wood Protection Association) to deliver the Colley/Hartford Memorial lecture was a tremendous honour. The audience responded positively to my presentation titled "Harmonizing Timber Circularity: A Holistic Approach to Sustainable Wood Resources Management in Australia." Additionally, our PhD student, June Vargas, who was awarded a travel grant from AWPA, delivered an outstanding presentation on "Determining the Minimal Level of CCA Penetration Required to Protect E. nitens Heartwood from Fungal Decay". I'm excited about the upcoming opportunity to meet and connect with numerous colleagues in US over the next few weeks. #AmericanWoodProtectionAssociation #UniversityofSunshineCoast #FWPA #TheNationalCentreforTimberDurabilityandDesignLife

We are looking forward to participating in the Plant Biosecurity Research Initiative (PBRI) Symposium in Cairns on 8-9 May. The symposium program focuses on 6 key areas: preparedness, surveillance, diagnostics, sustainable pest management, capability building and industry resilience. FWPA's Jodie Mason GAICD will also be chairing a session on 'Early warning and risk', a key area of research to understand, prepare for and manage pests, diseases and weeds that may be introduced into Australia. PBRI is a partnership between the Australian plant Research and Development Corporations (RDCs), working collaboratively with Plant Health Australia (PHA), the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry, industry, state and federal biosecurity stakeholders.
