The Free the Museum Philosophy:

As the Internet evolves, so does our ability to utilize it. Crucially, this means using the free resources that are increasingly accessible to more people. Gone are the days of relying on a web designer who lives halfway across the country and has never been to your site. Online drag-and-drop WYSIWYG (What You See Is What You Get) programs are more abundant and easier to use than ever before, and they are the ideal tool for small and medium-sized museums and historic sites that cannot afford the time or the price of maintaining a coded website through an outside webmaster.

The advice and techniques discussed in the book Free and Easy Website Design for Museums and Historic Sites and on this site are all created with an eye to making websites work for smaller institutions with limited budgets and timeframes. The fully equipped glossary of programming terms that are useful in planning and developing websites will please the neophyte designer as well as the Internet-savvy.

The book, published by Rowman & Littlefield as part of the American Association for State and Local History (AASLH) series, includes access to regularly updated online content on this site that builds upon and updates the information included in the print version. Readers can download website planning forms and find direct links to other helpful online content. Content is updated regularly and readers can submit queries and report areas that need updating through the forum.

While some areas of this website are available to all, certain features are only accessible if you purchased a copy of the book, After you have confirmed your site membership, you can access these features by using the login button above.
