Non-Academic Careers for International PhDs and
Postdocs in the US:
Panel Discussion and
Networking
Thursday, April 4
4:00-5:30pm EST
Zoom
(All registrants will receive the Zoom meeting link
via email on the day of the event)
This event is hosted by the Memorial Sloan Kettering
Office of Career and Professional Development and INet NYC.
Join us for this panel discussion and networking
session in Zoom breakout rooms, where you will hear from former academic
scientists:
1) who are working in NYC/Boston/CA in bench and
non-bench roles in pharma and biotech; 2) who navigated F-1 OPT and O-1 visa
sponsorship or greencard options (EB-1 and EB-2) to be a candidate for these
jobs; 3) who represent a variety of countries; and 4) who will speak about
their experiences being on the job market, and how they are enjoying their
career so far.
Brendan Delaney, JD, Immigration Attorney at Frank
& Delaney Immigration Law, LLC, will also give a presentation on the
different types of visa sponsorship or greencard options an international
researcher may consider if they are applying to non-academic jobs.
The goal of this event is for PhDs and postdocs in
the NYC area to learn about a variety of career options outside of academia in
the US, and in particular how international scholars can successfully pursue
these options. They will hear stories about transitioning into a career outside
of academia, and the additional factors to consider in the application and
interview process regarding possibilities for visa sponsorship or for getting a
greencard.
CONTENT
The event held over Zoom will consist of 3 parts:
4:00-5:00pm EST:
1) Brendan Delaney, JD, Immigration Attorney at Frank
& Delaney Immigration Law, LLC, will present on the different types of visa
sponsorship or greencard options an international researcher may consider if
they are applying to non-academic jobs. Brendan will not be able to answer
questions about individual circumstances. Throughout Brendan’s presentation
outlining the F-1 OPT, O-1, EB-1, EB-2, and H-1B, J-1 and other visa
sponsorship and greencard options, we will take a pause and ask the panelists
to share their individual stories about looking for a job, discussing their
sponsorship situations with potential employers, and how they effectively
communicated their status and needs and how they advocated for themselves to
land a job.
2) We will have a moderated panel
discussion where speakers will share with the audience their advice on
preparing to be a strong candidate for a job, how they got interested in their
career, their experiences on the job market and their career path, how they
landed the job, and their transition from academia into their current line of
work. Brendan Delaney will provide commentary from a legal
perspective.
5:00-5:30pm EST:
3) The panel discussion will be followed by a
networking session using Zoom breakout rooms so that the students, postdocs,
and panelists can meet in smaller groups and have discussions. We will set up each
panelist in their own breakout room, and students/postdocs will move from room
to room based on their interests.

The panelists include former PhDs/postdocs who
transitioned into a mixture of bench and non-bench positions in a variety of
