My Life and Toys

One of my favorite books of the year! It’s like the Sears toy catalog for toy lovers!

Original book of photographs and text by the noted director/writer/producer Brian Levant, presenting his extraordinary collection of animated feature and comic toys, including hundreds of iconic characters represented in figures, banks, games, lunchboxes, puppets, comics, windups, vehicles and items at the bottom of cereal boxes.

This comprehensive and one-of-a-kind collection and book/work, itself, is presented in varied chapters. There are chapters here that include the author’s Flintstones collection; others created while he produced features with Steven Spielberg; or those acquired while producing classic TV shows, like Mork & Mindy. And this is just a small sampling of what is in this exhaustive book, where the sum total has been acquired over the past 50 years. This is a book distinctive in its content; in both words and the hundreds of original photographs created exclusively for it.

The author’s acclaim and success as a producer of popular culture film and television features allows presentation here of a distinctly individual and personal yet universally interesting book for collectors and the general public alike, which has no comparison and could not be replicated even in a minor form, by anyone else other than this author.

Mad Dreams and Monsters: The Art of Phil Tippett and Tippett Studio

From Star Wars to Jurassic Park and RoboCop to Starship Troopers, special effects master Phil Tippett has brought his magic to some of the most iconic films of all time. His unparalleled career in visual effects spans more than 40 years, with two Academy Awards, one BAFTA, and two Emmys. This stunning book celebrates Tippett’s career, from early Super 8 explorations through his groundbreaking work with Industrial Light & Magic, DreamWorks, and beyond. While Tippett’s first love remains the stop-motion animation that made him a Hollywood legend, he was present at the birth of big-screen digital effects, and his genius has evolved with the times. In 1984 he founded Tippett Studio, which has come to specialize in digital effects.

Packed with over a thousand behind-the-scenes photographs, Mad Dreams and Monsters includes never-before-published stories from the master himself and a veritable who’s who of visual effects luminaries—a must-have for movie fans, film students, and anyone who’s ever been captivated by movie magic.

The Architecture of Suspense: The Built World in the Films of Alfred Hitchcock

The inimitable, haunting films of Alfred Hitchcock took place in settings, both exterior and interior, that deeply impacted our experiences of his most unforgettable works. From the enclosed spaces of Rope and Rear Window to the wide-open expanses of North by Northwest, the physical worlds inhabited by desperate characters are a crucial element in our perception of the Hitchcockian universe. As Christine Madrid French reveals in this original and indispensable book, Hitchcock’s relation to the built world was informed by an intense engagement with location and architectural form—in an era marked by modernism’s advance—fueled by some of the most creative mid-century designers in film.

Hitchcock saw elements of the built world not just as scenic devices but as interactive areas to frame narrative exchanges. In his films, building forms also serve a sentient purpose—to capture and convey feelings, sensations, and moments that generate an emotive response from the viewer. Visualizing the contemporary built landscape allowed the director to illuminate Americans’ everyday experiences as well as their own uncertain relationship with their environment and with each other.

French shares several untold stories, such as the real-life suicide outside the Hotel Empire in Vertigo (which foreshadowed uncannily that film’s tragic finale), and takes us to the actual buildings that served as the inspiration for Psycho’s infamous Bates Motel. Her analysis of North by Northwest uncovers the Frank Lloyd Wright underpinnings for Robert Boyle’s design of the modernist house from the film’s celebrated Mount Rushmore sequence and ingeniously establishes the Vandamm House as the prototype of the cinematic trope of the villain’s lair. She also shows how the widespread unemployment of the 1930s resulted in a surge of gifted architects transplanting their careers into the film industry. These practitioners created sets that drew from contemporary design schools of thought and referenced real structures, both modern and historic. The Architecture of Suspense is the first book to document how these great architectural minds found expression in Hitchcock’s films and how the director used their talents and his own unique vision to create an enduring and evocative cinematic world.

Let’s Do It: The Birth of Pop Music: A History

Pop music didn’t begin with the Beatles in 1963, or with Elvis in 1956, or even with the first seven-inch singles in 1949. There was a pre-history that went back to the first recorded music, right back to the turn of the century.

Who were these earliest record stars—and were they in any meaningful way “pop stars”? Who was George Gershwin writing songs for? Why did swing, the hit sound for a decade or more, become almost invisible after World War II?

The prequel to Bob Stanley’s celebrated Yeah! Yeah! Yeah!, this new volume is the first book to tell the definitive story of the birth of pop, from the invention of the 78 rpm record at the end of the nineteenth century to the beginnings of rock and the modern pop age. Covering superstars such as Louis Armstrong, Bessie Smith, Duke Ellington and Frank Sinatra, alongside the unheralded songwriters and arrangers behind some of our most enduring songs, Stanley paints an aural portrait of pop music’s formative years in stunning clarity, uncovering the silver threads and golden needles that bind the form together.

Bringing the eclectic, evolving world of early pop to life—from ragtime, blues and jazz to Broadway, country, crooning, and beyond—Let’s Do It is essential reading for all music lovers.

“An encyclopedic introduction to the fascinating and often forgotten creators of Anglo-American hit music in the first half of the twentieth century.”—Neil Tennant (The Pet Shop Boys)

Jaws: The Folio Society

One of the greatest cult thrillers of all time, Jaws has sold in excess of 20 million copies worldwide. Seething with sexual tension, political corruption and macabre affairs, the novel is deeper and darker than Steven Spielberg’s seminal 1975 film, while the magnificent shark scenes are some of the most terrifying prose sequences in modern fiction. If ever a novel was begging to be illustrated, this is it. Korean artist Hokyoung Kim brings her unique cinematic style to this spectacular edition, including a chilling binding portrait of the Great White Shark that terrorizes the community of Amity. Although fear is at the heart of the novel, the fragility of marine life also courses through the narrative, and this theme is explored by Wendy Benchley in her newly commissioned introduction.

With a background in film production and narrative illustration, Korean artist Hokyoung Kim could not be better suited to illustrating this edition. Her impactful artwork demonstrates her passion for transforming stories into drawings, and her art and Jaws’ narrative match perfectly for maximum tension. This is the ultimate collector’s edition of the novel that terrified a generation of beach goers. All the ingredients of a page-turner are present, but there are also nods to the classics: the comparison between Quint and the insane Captain Ahab in Herman Melville’s Moby-Dick is striking. And behind the blood, guts and insalubrious encounters, Benchley offers a stark critique of American culture and the human obsession with suppressing nature.

As much about the corrupt workings of a Long Island town as it is about shark attacks, Jaws nevertheless demonized the Great White by homing in on our innate fears. Like the residents of Amity, the reader is constantly braced for another grisly dismembering, and the longer the predator remains at large, the more is revealed about the murky dealings among the town’s authorities. Increasingly aware of the public fixation with sharks following the publication of Jaws – and Spielberg’s subsequent film – Benchley spent the rest of his life campaigning for the safety of these incredible creatures, which have evolved over 450 million years but face being hunted to extinction in a century. His passion for marine conservation is shared by his wife Wendy, who continues to work in environmental politics and policy today: ‘Understanding the importance of sharks and the ocean has broadened our view of the planet’s future. Scientists, explorers, and (most) world leaders know that the health of Earth’s oceans is directly linked to some of the most significant challenges of our time.’

Neverwhere: Folio Society Edition

Neil Gaiman’s urban fantasy epic weaves a spell unlike any other. This special edition of Neverwhere features a new introduction by Susanna Clarke and glorious illustrations by Chris Malbon.

Think you know London? Think again … Neil Gaiman’s modern fantasy classic invites the reader to step sideways into a hidden world of forgotten tube stations, fiefdoms and murder in the dark. This special collector’s edition features a magical introduction by Susanna Clarke, winner of the Women’s Prize for Fiction, as well as Gaiman’s short story ‘How the Marquis Got His Coat Back’. Artist Chris Malbon’s illustrations – including a double-page spread and full-colour chapter headings – are a maelstrom of the fantastical and the real, bursting with detail and drama. The topsy-turvy binding design has Richard Mayhew falling from one London to the other, while the slipcase is printed with a parallel version of the image, with the Lady Door slipping between worlds. The rebellious younger sibling of American Gods and Anansi Boys, Neverwhere is a dark, dangerous and irresistible fantasy adventure.

Newly relocated to the big city, Richard Mayhew thinks he has a handle on life in London. He has a good job, his own flat and a beautiful girlfriend who thinks she knows what’s best for him. All that changes when he stops to help an injured homeless girl on the street – because Door is a denizen of London Below, a twin city populated by people and creatures that are invisible to everyday Londoners. Richard must contend with a world of rat-talkers and Black Friars; a world where a trip across the Night Bridge could prove fatal. On the run from assassins with his new friends, Richard will need to find his footing quickly if he is to survive. And he must, at all costs, Mind the Gap …

Originally devised for the screen after a conversation between the author and comedian Lenny Henry, Neverwhere the TV show eventually made its debut in 1996. Following its release, Gaiman was prompted to write the novel version to circumvent the limitations of budget and, as he put it, ‘to get what I had in my head into the inside of other people’s heads.’ A slightly grubby, wild grandchild of Alice in Wonderland and The Wizard of Oz, Neverwhere continues the great tradition of dropping characters into unfamiliar worlds only for them to discover their true selves on the journey. In her introduction, novelist Susanna Clarke provides a handy guide to London Below, signposting its attractions and dangers, whilst also celebrating Neil Gaiman’s storytelling genius.

A Century Of American Toys & Games: The Story Of Pressman Toy

From Chinese checkers to the Wheel of Fortune board game―the story of how one family business shaped the way Americans play.

When Jack Pressman went into business as a manufacturer of basic playthings like lead soldiers and toy xylophones in 1922, he could little have imagined that his small venture would become one of the iconic American toy companies. The firm scored its first megahit in the 1920s, when it popularized Chinese checkers, and it went on to introduce enduring favorites like Rummikub and Tri-Ominos. Today the Pressman Toy Corporation remains well known for its line of classic board games in eye-catching red boxes, as well as games based on popular TV shows.

This centennial history traces the growth of the company under the leadership of three successive Pressmans: Jack, his wife Lynn (one of the first female CEOs in the industry), and their son Jim. It is a story that reflects the development of the toy industry as a whole―encompassing the rise of plastics, the emergence of character licensing and TV advertising, and the surprising endurance of the physical board game in our digital age. Abundantly illustrated with new color photography as well as rare archival images, this will be an essential volume for anyone with an interest in the history of play.

Bong Joon Ho: Dissident Cinema

Brilliantly illustrated and designed by the London-based film magazine Little White Lies, Bong Joon Ho: Dissident Cinema examines the career of the South Korean writer/director, who has been making critically acclaimed feature films for more than two decades.

First breaking out into the international scene with festival-favorite Barking Dogs Never Bite (2000), Bong then set his sights on the story of a real-life serial killer in 2003’s Memories of Murder and once again won strong international critical attention. But it was 2006’s The Host that proved to be a huge breakout moment both for Bong and the Korean film industry. The monster movie, set in Seoul, premiered at Cannes and became an instant hit—South Korea’s widest release ever, setting new box office records and selling remake rights in the US to Universal.

Bong’s next feature, Mother (2009) also premiered at Cannes, once again earning critical acclaim and appearing on many “best-of” lists for 2009/2010. Bong’s first English-language film, Snowpiercer (2013)—set on a postapocalyptic train where class divisions erupt into class warfare—followed on its heels, bringing his work outside of the South Korean and film festival markets and onto the stage of global commercial cinema. With 2017’s Okja , Bong became even more of an internationally known name, with the New York Times‘ A. O. Scott calling the film “a miracle of imagination and technique.” Bong’s next film, the 2019 black comedy/thriller Parasite, simultaneously scaled back—the film is mostly set in just two locations, with two Korean families taking center stage—and took his career to new heights, winning the Palme d’Or with a unanimous vote, as well as history-making Academy Awards for Best Picture, Best Director, Best Original Screenplay, and Best International Feature Film.

Parasite’s jarring shifts in tone—encompassing darkness, drama, slapstick, and black humor—and its critiques of late capitalism and American imperialism are in conversation with Bong’s entire body of work, and this mid-career monograph will survey the entirety of that work, including his short films and music videos, to flesh out the stories behind the films with supporting analytical text and interviews with Bong’s key collaborators. The book also explores Bong’s rise in the cultural eye of the West, catching up readers with his career before his next masterpiece arrives.

Robots 1:2: R.F. Collection

Collectible “kinetic sculptures” from bygone visions of the future, in a new compact edition

This compact volume explores the 172 space-themed toys in the R.F. Robot Collection held by the Vitra Design Museum. Largely produced in Japan between 1937 and 1973, these figures of robots (and the occasional astronaut) have been carefully researched and compiled over the years by Rolf Fehlbaum, former Chairman of Vitra and founder of the Vitra Design Museum, who describes them as “small kinetic sculptures of great originality.”

Ever since the term’s first appearance in Czech writer Karel ?apek’s science-fiction play R.U.R. in 1921, robots have both served and taken over the work of humans, creating human dependency and, at times, a shift in the power dynamics of a society. Robots 1:2 shows the toys and their original packaging (where available, as it was seldom preserved) on a scale of 1:2, with the largest robot determining the size of the book. This conveys something of the uncanny nature of the robots and their general ambiguity, while the vivid illustrations on the boxes give an idea of the futuristic fantasies developed over the period. QR codes for some of the robots link to a page with short videos showing them in action.

The Come Up: An Oral History of the Rise of Hip-Hop

The music that would come to be known as hip-hop was born at a party in the Bronx in the summer of 1973. Now, fifty years later, it’s the most popular music genre in America. Just as jazz did in the first half of the twentieth century, hip-hop and its groundbreaking DJs and artists—nearly all of them people of color from some of America’s most overlooked communities—pushed the boundaries of music to new frontiers, while transfixing the country’s youth and reshaping fashion, art, and even language.

And yet, the stories of many hip-hop pioneers and their individual contributions in the pre-Internet days of mixtapes and word of mouth are rarely heard—and some are at risk of being lost forever. Now, in The Come Up, the New York Times bestselling author Jonathan Abrams offers the most comprehensive account so far of hip-hop’s rise, a multi-decade chronicle told in the voices of the people who made it happen.

In more than three hundred interviews conducted over three years, Abrams has captured the stories of the DJs, executives, producers, and artists who both witnessed and themselves forged the history of hip-hop. Masterfully combining these voices into a seamless symphonic narrative, Abrams traces how the genre grew out of the resourcefulness of a neglected population in the South Bronx, and from there how it flowed into New York City’s other boroughs, and beyond—from electrifying live gatherings, then on to radio and vinyl, below to the Mason-Dixon Line, west to Los Angeles through gangster rap and G-funk, and then across generations.

Abrams has on record Grandmaster Caz detailing hip-hop’s infancy, Edward “Duke Bootee” Fletcher describing the origins of “The Message,” DMC narrating his role in introducing hip-hop to the mainstream, Ice Cube recounting N.W.A’s breakthrough and breakup, Kool Moe Dee recalling his Grammys boycott, and countless more key players. Throughout, Abrams conveys with singular vividness the drive, the stakes, and the relentless creativity that ignited one of the greatest revolutions in modern music.

The Come Up is an exhilarating behind-the-scenes account of how hip-hop came to rule the world—and an essential contribution to music history.

Holmes Coming

From Kenneth Johnson, creator of the critically acclaimed landmark TV miniseries V, producer of The Six Million Dollar Man and creator of the iconic Emmy-winning series The Bionic Woman, The Incredible Hulk, and Alien Nation.

The genius reappears, but is the twenty-first century ready for him?

Dr. Amy Winslow tells the story: in foggy, nighttime San Francisco a jogging SFPD captain is savagely attacked by a Bengal tiger which then vanishes. In her ER, Amy labors unsuccessfully to save the captain’s life, then consoles his aggrieved closest friend, Lt. Luis Ortega. Neither suspects their lives will intertwine in a life-or-death mystery.

The next day, checking on former patient Mrs. Hudson at her Victorian house isolated in Marin County’s forest, Amy discovers in the cellar a secret, cobweb-covered 1899 electrochemical laboratory containing a Jules Verne-esque steam-punk sarcophagus out of which springs a wild-eyed, half-mummified, crypt-keeper-like man who injects himself with something before falling dead at her feet. Amy barely revives him.

He claims to be a real-life Victorian master chemist and detective named Holmes, who allowed Conan Doyle to write stories based on his cases, though was slightly annoyed when Doyle changed his real first name to the catchier Sherlock. Becoming uninspired by 1890s crime, Holmes devised this method to hibernate for a century to investigate future mysteries.

Amy assumes he’s a lunatic. His Scotland Yard identity papers were stolen while he slept, so it takes her a while to realize his amazing story is true.

Respectably handsome when cleaned up, Holmes is still the same brash, egoistic, uber-English, cocaine-addicted, non-feminist genius — but now a century out of sync — so his still-brilliant deductions are sometimes laughingly or dangerously wrong. Holmes and Amy, his reluctant new Watson, find themselves unexpectedly attracted to each other while perilously involved in reclaiming his proof of identity, aided by cybersavvy street teen Zapper. It’s all connected to the horrific death-by-tiger, only the first of several bizarre, mystifying murders being committed by an exquisitely fiendish descendant of Holmes’ Victorian archenemy, Professor Moriarty.

The tone is classic Holmes — plus a refreshing twist of fish-out-of-water humor with a surprising spark of real romance.

Anthems We Love: 29 Iconic Artists on the Hit Songs That Shaped Our Lives

Which Beach Boys’ song brings Paul McCartney to tears? What makes “Light My Fire” a rite-of-passage song for teens in every generation, according to Doors guitarist Robby Krieger? What is it about music that brings back so vividly the passion of our early loves, our deepest losses, our richest memories?

Acclaimed music journalist Steve Baltin examines twenty-nine iconic songs of modern music to ultimately answer: what transforms a song into an anthem? A Convenient Parallel Dimension: How Ghostbusters Slimed Us Forever

“Rarely has a movie this expensive provided so many quotable lines.” So wrote Roger Ebert in his review of Ghostbusters, the 1984 blockbuster that handed our paranormal fears over to some of the sharpest comic minds of the day. Ghostbusters instantly resonated with audiences thanks to eye-popping special effects and crackling wit; to date, it remains the highest-grossing horror comedy of all time. The film spawned an Emmy-nominated Saturday morning cartoon, a tentpole 1989 sequel, a contentious 2016 reboot, legions of merchandise, and one of the most dedicated fan bases in history. Ghostbusters also elevated its players to superstardom, something a few cast members found more daunting than the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man.

Now, for the first time, the entire history of the slime-soaked franchise is told in A Convenient Parallel Dimension: How Ghostbusters Slimed Us Forever. The cohesion of talent during the mid-’70s comedy revolution, the seat-of-their-pants creation of the first Ghostbusters, the explosive success that seemed to mandate a franchise, the five year struggle to make Ghostbusters II, the thirty-one-year struggle to make Ghostbusters III—it’s all here, with incredible attention to detail. Thoroughly researched and engaging, A Convenient Parallel Dimension smashes long-held myths and half truths about the dynamics behind this cultural juggernaut and presents the real story, down to the last drop of ectoplasm.

Hollywood: The Oral History

The real story of Hollywood as told by such luminaries as Steven Spielberg, Frank Capra, Katharine Hepburn, Meryl Streep, Harold Lloyd, and nearly four hundred others, assembled from the American Film Institute’s treasure trove of interviews, reveals a fresh history of the American movie industry from its beginnings to today.

From the archives of the American Film Institute comes a unique picture of what it was like to work in Hollywood from its beginnings to its present day. Gleaned from nearly three thousand interviews, involving four hundred voices from the industry, Hollywood: The Oral History, lets a reader “listen in” on candid remarks from the biggest names in front of the camera—Bette Davis, Meryl Streep, Tom Hanks, Harold Lloyd—to the biggest behind it—Frank Capra, Steven Spielberg, Alfred Hitchcock, Jordan Peele, as well as the lesser known individuals that shaped what was heard and seen on screen: musicians, costumers, art directors, cinematographers, writers, sound men, editors, make-up artists, and even script timers, messengers, and publicists. The result is like a conversation among the gods and goddesses of film: lively, funny, insightful, historically accurate and, for the first time, authentically honest in its portrait of Hollywood. It’s the insider’s story.

Legendary film scholar Jeanine Basinger and New York Times bestselling author Sam Wasson, both acclaimed storytellers in their own right, have undertaken the monumental task of digesting these tens of thousands of hours of talk and weaving it into a definitive portrait of workaday Hollywood.

Vampire Cinema: The First One Hundred Years By Christopher Frayling

A century of classic vampire cinema―in posters, stills and artwork―from Murnau to True Blood and beyond

This visual feast celebrates classic vampire cinema―mainstream and niche―through the many colorful ways in which the key films have been marketed and consumed.
F.W. Murnau’s haunting film Nosferatu had its premiere in Berlin in March 1922. Bram Stoker’s widow, Florence, tried hard to sue the production company for breach of copyright but had to settle in the end for a court order to destroy all prints and negatives. The film kept resurrecting, though, and is now considered the first, and one of the greatest, of all vampire movies―the founder of a dynasty of prints of darkness.

The bloodline has spread from Nosferatu to Hollywood’s Dracula and progeny (1931–48); from Hammer’s Dracula/Horror of Dracula and sequels (1958–74) to versions of Sheridan Le Fanu’s story “Carmilla” and other lesbian vampires (1970–2020); from the bestselling novels Salem’s Lot and Interview with the Vampire to vampires who have shed their capes, hereditary titles and period trappings to become assorted smalltown oddballs, addicts, delinquents, psychopaths, rednecks, fashionistas, gay icons, comedians and even comic-book heroes (1975–2022).

This book is dripping with stills, posters, artworks, press books―many of which have not seen the light of day for a very long time―and is authored by cultural historian and connoisseur of the Gothic Christopher Frayling, who has been called “the Van Helsing de nos jours.”

The Birth of Rock ’n’ Roll: 70 Years of Sun Records

A fascinating look at the history of Sun Records, the label that started Rock n’ Roll, told through 70 of its iconic recordings.

In Memphis, Tennessee, in the 1950s, there was hard-edged blues playing on Beale Street, and hillbilly boogie on the outskirts of town. But at Sam Phillips’ Sun Records studio on Union Avenue, there was something different going on – a whole lotta shakin’, rockin’, and rollin’.

This is where rock ’n’ roll was born.

Sun Records: the company that launched Elvis Presley, Jerry Lee Lewis, Johnny Cash, Roy Orbison, and Carl Perkins. The label that brought the world, “Blue Suede Shoes,” “Whole Lotta Shakin’ Goin’ On,” “Breathless,” “I Walk the Line,” “Mystery Train,” “Good Rockin’ Tonight.”

The Birth of Rock ’n’ Roll: 70 Years of Sun Records is the official history of this legendary label, and looks at its story in a unique way: through the lens of 70 of its most iconic recordings. From the early days with primal blues artists like Howlin’ Wolf and B.B. King to long nights in the studio with Elvis and Jerry Lee Lewis, you will see how the label was shaped and how it redefined American music. Accompanying the recordings is the label’s origin story and a look at the mission of the label today, as well as “Sun Spot” sidebars—a fascinating dive into subjects such as how the iconic logo was created, the legendary Million Dollar Quartet sessions, and how the song “Harper Valley, PTA” funded the purchase of the label.

Written by two of the most acclaimed music writers of our time, Peter Guralnick and Colin Escott, and featuring hundreds of rare images from the Sun archives as well as a foreword by music legend Jerry Lee Lewis, this is a one-of-a-kind book for anyone who wants to know where it all started.

Heat 2: A Novel

Michael Mann, four-time-Oscar-nominated writer-director of The Last of the Mohicans, The Insider, Ali, Miami Vice, Collateral, and Heat teams up with Edgar Award–winning author Meg Gardiner to deliver Mann’s first novel, an explosive return to the universe and characters of his classic crime film—with an all-new story unfolding in the years before and after the iconic movie

One day after the end of Heat, Chris Shiherlis (Val Kilmer) is holed up in Koreatown, wounded, half delirious, and desperately trying to escape LA. Hunting him is LAPD detective Vincent Hanna (Al Pacino). Hours earlier, Hanna killed Shiherlis’s brother in arms Neil McCauley (De Niro) in a gunfight under the strobe lights at the foot of an LAX runway. Now Hanna’s determined to capture or kill Shiherlis, the last survivor of McCauley’s crew, before he ghosts out of the city.

In 1988, seven years earlier, McCauley, Shiherlis, and their highline crew are taking scores on the West Coast, the US-Mexican border, and now in Chicago. Driven, daring, they’re pulling in money and living vivid lives. And Chicago homicide detective Vincent Hanna—a man unreconciled with his history—is following his calling, the pursuit of armed and dangerous men into the dark and wild places, hunting an ultraviolent gang of home invaders.

Meanwhile, the fallout from McCauley’s scores and Hanna’s pursuit cause unexpected repercussions in a parallel narrative, driving through the years following Heat.

Heat 2 projects its dimensional and richly drawn men and women into whole new worlds—from the inner sanctums of rival crime syndicates in a South American free-trade zone to transnational criminal enterprises in Southeast Asia. The novel brings you intimately into these lives. In Michael Mann’s Heat universe, they will confront new adversaries in lethal circumstances beyond all boundaries.

Heat 2 is engrossing, moving, and tragic—a masterpiece of crime fiction with the same extraordinary ambitions, scope, and rich characterizations as the epic film.

Slaying the Dragon: A Secret History of Dungeons & Dragons

Role-playing game historian Ben Riggs unveils the secret history of TSR― the company that unleashed imaginations with Dungeons & Dragons, was driven into ruin by disastrous management decisions, and then saved by their bitterest rival.

Co-created by wargame enthusiasts Gary Gygax and Dave Arneson, the original Dungeons & Dragons role-playing game released by TSR (Tactical Studies Rules) in 1974 created a radical new medium: the role-playing game. For the next two decades, TSR rocketed to success, producing multiple editions of D&D, numerous settings for the game, magazines, video games, New York Times bestselling novels by Margaret Weis, Tracy Hickman, and R. A. Salvatore, and even a TV show! But by 1997, a series of ruinous choices and failed projects brought TSR to the edge of doom―only to be saved by their fiercest competitor, Wizards of the Coast, the company behind the collectible card game Magic: The Gathering.

Unearthed from Ben Riggs’s own adventurous campaign of in-depth research, interviews with major players, and acquisitions of secret documents, Slaying the Dragon reveals the true story of the rise and fall of TSR. Go behind the scenes of their Lake Geneva headquarters where innovative artists and writers redefined the sword and sorcery genre, managers and executives sabotaged their own success by alienating their top talent, ignoring their customer fanbase, accruing a mountain of debt, and agreeing to deals which, by the end, made them into a publishing company unable to publish so much as a postcard.

As epic and fantastic as the adventures TSR published, Slaying the Dragon is the legendary tale of the rise and fall of the company that created the role-playing game world.

Backbeat 33 1/3 Revolutions Per Minute: A Critical Trip Through the Rock LP Era, 1955–1999

Whether you’re a lifelong collector or have only just gotten hip to the vinyl revival, navigating the vast landscape of rock albums can be a daunting prospect. Enter Mike Segretto and his mammoth 33 1/3 Revolutions Per Minute, a history of the rock LP era told through a very personal selection of nearly 700 albums. Beginning with the birth of rock and roll in the 1950s, Segretto moves through the explosive innovations of the 1960s, the classic rock and punk albums of the 1970s, the new wave classics of the 1980s, and the alternative revolution of the 1990s, always with an eye to both the iconic and the ephemeral, the failed experiments and the brilliant trailblazers.

It’s all here: everything from the classics (Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band, Purple Rain, Nevermind, and countless other usual suspects) to such oddities as albums by Johnny “Guitar” Watson, P. P. Arnold, The Dentists, and Holly Golightly. Throughout, Segretto reveals the perpetual evolution of a modern art form, tracing the rock album’s journey from a vehicle for singles and filler sold to kids, through its maturation into a legitimate, self-contained medium of expression by 1967, and onward to its dominance in the ’70s, ’80s, and ’90s.

Whether you read it from cover to cover, seek out specific albums, or just dip in at random and let the needle fall where it may, 33 1/3 Revolutions Per Minute is a fun, informative, and unapologetically opinionated read.

Fighting Without Fighting: Kung Fu Cinema’s Journey to the West

In the spring and summer of 1973, a wave of martial arts movies from Hong Kong—epitomized by Bruce Lee’s Enter the Dragon—smashed box-office records for foreign-language films in America and ignited a “kung fu craze” that swept the world. Fighting Without Fighting explores this dramatic phenomenon, and it argues that, more than just a cinematic fad, the West’s sudden fascination with—and moral panic about—the Asian fighting arts left lasting legacies still present today.

The book traces the background of the craze in the longer development of Hong Kong’s martial arts cinema. It discusses the key films in detail, as well as their popular reception and the debates they ignited, where kung fu challenged Western identities and raised anxieties about violence, both on and off-screen. And it examines the proliferation of ideas and images from these films in fields as diverse as popular music, superhero franchises, children’s cartoons, and contemporary art. Illuminating and accessible, Fighting Without Fighting draws a vivid bridge between East and West.

Kolchak: The Night Stalker (TV Milestones Series)

Before Buffy the Vampire Slayer or The X-Files, there was Carl Kolchak, a world-weary Chicago newspaper reporter with a cheap, seersucker suit and a penchant for uncovering monsters lurking in every corner. Kolchak first appeared on American screens in the 1972 ABC television movie The Night Stalker, which was then the most-watched television movie in history. The success of this initial offering led to a sequel, The Night Strangler, and a television series, Kolchak: The Night Stalker, that ran from 1974 until 1975.

By carefully focusing on the historical and artistic contexts in which it emerged, Kendall R. Phillips offers insights into the way the series both reflected contemporary horror narratives and changed them. Ultimately, the series proved influential for later television horror shows based not only on what it did right but on the mistakes future creators would learn to avoid. The enduring impact of the series on current television horror continues to draw more and more individuals into its robust fanbase, and these fans continue to consume and create new narratives of their favorite monster-hunting reporter even fifty years after he first appeared.

Why Not?: Lessons on Comedy, Courage, and Chutzpah

From master comedian Mark Schiff, a long-time touring partner of Jerry Seinfeld, comes a hilarious account of decades of foolery with comedy and acting legends and how he honed his mensch skills in all of life’s arenas.

Pursuing a career in comedy has always taken a lot of chutzpah. Today Mark Schiff looks back at his fifty-year career as a stand-up comic, actor, and writer and knows he’s laughed with the best of them. His comedy and character have been widely praised by everyone from Jerry Seinfeld to Bill Maher, Paul Reiser, and Colin Quinn—as Seinfeld writes in his foreword, Mark is “the greatest comedy pal a guy could ever wish for”—but it hasn’t always been easy.

In this brilliantly honest collection of essays inducing both heart tugs and deep belly laughs, Mark recounts growing up Jewish in the outer boroughs of New York City and shares how he survived a harrowing childhood and managed health crises, aging, marriage, parenting, and career highs and lows. With wit and wisdom, Mark reminds us that no matter the troubles at-hand, the show must always go on. The result is an unforgettable and highly relatable account from one of the best humor writers of our time that will leave readers of all faiths energized and feeling like they’ve schmoozed with the best of them.

After Midnight: Watchmen After Watchmen

Alan Moore’s and Dave Gibbons’s Watchmen fundamentally altered the perception of American comic books and remains one of the medium’s greatest hits. Launched in 1986—“the year that changed comics” for most scholars in comics studies—Watchmen quickly assisted in cementing the legacy that comics were a serious form of literature no longer defined by the Comics Code era of funny animal and innocuous superhero books that appealed mainly to children.

After Midnight: Watchmen After Watchmen looks specifically at the three adaptations of Moore’s and Gibbons’s Watchmen—Zack Snyder’s Watchmen film (2009), Geoff Johns’s comic book sequel Doomsday Clock (2017), and Damon Lindelof’s Watchmen series on HBO (2019).

Divided into three parts, the anthology considers how the sequels, especially the limited series, have prompted a reevaluation of the original text and successfully harnessed the politics of the contemporary moment into a potent relevancy. The first part considers the various texts through conceptions of adaptation, remediation, and transmedia storytelling. Part two considers the HBO series through its thematic focus on the relationship between American history and African American trauma by analyzing how the show critiques the alt-right, represents intergenerational trauma, illustrates alternative possibilities for Black representation, and complicates our understanding of how the mechanics of the show’s production can complicate its politics. Finally, the book’s last section considers the themes of nostalgia and trauma, both firmly rooted in the original Moore and Gibbons series, and how the sequel texts reflect and refract upon those often-intertwined phenomena.

  • In the early days, Walt Disney Imagineering “was in one little building and everybody parked in the back and you came in through the model shop, and you could see everything that was going on,” recalled Marty Sklar. “When we started on the World’s Fair in 1960 and 1961, we had 100 people here. And so everybody knew everything about what was happening and the status of [each] project, so you really felt like you were part of the whole team whether you were working on that project or not. And, you know, there was so much talent here.”

The Empire of Effects: Industrial Light and Magic and the Rendering of Realism

Just about every major film now comes to us with an assist from digital effects. The results are obvious in superhero fantasies, yet dramas like Roma also rely on computer-generated imagery to enhance the verisimilitude of scenes. But the realism of digital effects is not actually true to life. It is a realism invented by Hollywood—by one company specifically: Industrial Light & Magic.

The Empire of Effects shows how the effects company known for the puppets and space battles of the original Star Wars went on to develop the dominant aesthetic of digital realism. Julie A. Turnock finds that ILM borrowed its technique from the New Hollywood of the 1970s, incorporating lens flares, wobbly camerawork, haphazard framing, and other cinematography that called attention to the person behind the camera. In the context of digital imagery, however, these aesthetic strategies had the opposite effect, heightening the sense of realism by calling on tropes suggesting the authenticity to which viewers were accustomed. ILM’s style, on display in the most successful films of the 1980s and beyond, was so convincing that other studios were forced to follow suit, and today, ILM is a victim of its own success, having fostered a cinematic monoculture in which it is but one player among many.

Stuff They Don’t Want You to Know

The co-hosts of the hit podcast Stuff They Don’t Want You to Know, Ben Bowlin, Matthew Frederick, & Noel Brown, discern conspiracy fact from fiction in this sharp, humorous, compulsively readable, and gorgeously illustrated book.

In times of chaos and uncertainty, when trust is low and economic disparity is high, when political institutions are crumbling and cultural animosities are building, conspiracy theories find fertile ground. Many are wild, most are untrue, a few are hard to ignore, but all of them share one vital trait: there’s a seed of truth at their center. That seed carries the sordid, conspiracy-riddled history of our institutions and corporations woven into its DNA.

Ben Bowlin, Matt Frederick, and Noel Brown host the popular iHeart Media podcast, Stuff They Don’t Want You To Know. They are experts at exploring, explaining, and interrogating today’s emergent conspiracies―from chem trails and biological testing to the secrets of lobbying and the indisputable evidence of UFOs.

Written in a smart, witty, and conversational style, elevated with amazing illustrations, Stuff They Don’t Want You to Know is a vital book in understanding the nature of conspiracy and using truth as a powerful weapon against ignorance, misinformation, and lies.

The Charlton Companion

An all-new definitive history of Connecticut’s notorious all-in-one comic book company! Often disparaged as a second-rate funny-book outfit, Charlton produced a vast array of titles that span from the 1940s Golden Age to the Bronze Age of the ’70s in many genres, from Hot Rods to Haunted Love. The imprint experienced explosive bursts of creativity, most memorably the “Action Hero Line” edited by Dick Giordano in the 1960s, which featured the renowned talents of Steve Ditko and a stellar team of creators, as well as the unforgettable ’70s “Bullseye” era that spawned E-Man and Doomsday +1, all helmed by veteran masters and talented newcomers―and serving as a training ground for an entire generation of comics creators thriving in an environment of complete creative freedom. From its beginnings with a handshake deal consummated in county jail, to the company’s accomplishments beyond comics, woven into this prose narrative are interviews with dozens of talented participants, including Giordano, Dennis O’Neil, Alex Toth, Sanho Kim, Tom Sutton, Pat Boyette, Nick Cuti, John Byrne, Mike Zeck, Joe Staton, Sam Glanzman, Neal Adams, Joe Gill, and even some Derby residents who recall working in the sprawling company plant. Though it gave up the ghost over three decades ago, Charlton’s influence continues today with its Action Heroes serving as inspiration for Alan Moore’s cross-media graphic novel hit, Watchmen. Black Panther: A Nation Under Our Feet: Folio Society Edition

Discover the saga that sank its claws into a new generation of graphic novel readers. Black Panther: A Nation Under Our Feet presents all twelve issues of the groundbreaking series written by National Book Award-winner and Pulitzer Prize-finalist Ta-Nehisi Coates. Featuring T’Challa, the Black Panther – scientist, Super Hero and ruler of the Afrofuturist state of Wakanda – this is a story that heralded a more diverse, more politically astute age of Super Hero comics. Walter Mosley, one of the most respected novelists in America, provides an incisive and heartfelt introduction to this complex drama about T’Challa’s responsibilities as a hero and his obligations to his people. Following the success of Folio’s Marvel Age and Marvel Heroes series, this majestic slipcased edition also features award-winning sequential art by veteran comic-book artist Brian Stelfreeze in a graphic novel truly fit for a king of Marvel Comics.

Created by Marvel legends Stan Lee and artist Jack Kirby, Black Panther first appeared in Fantastic Four #52 in July 1966, a month after the American Civil Rights Movement’s ‘March Against Fear’ brought the notion of Black Power to the nation’s attention. The first Black Super Hero to appear in American comics, Black Panther was not the secret identity, but the ceremonial title of T’Challa, ruler and protector of Wakanda. Though a man of preternatural senses and athletic prowess, T’Challa’s chief weapon was his prodigious intellect; he was both Super Hero and statesman. Published 50 years later in 2016, during the final months of the Obama administration, Black Panther: A Nation Under Our Feet finds the Wakandan ruler facing a rebellion by his own people. The King himself must hunt down the superhuman insurgents responsible, knowing that should he fall in battle his entire nation will fall with him. Writer Ta-Nehisi Coates explores the conflict between the individual and the state, between Black tradition and Black autonomy.

Thor: The Folio Society

Behold a storm of comic-book creativity in Thor, celebrating the 60th anniversary of the hammer-wielding thunder god. Once again, Folio teams up with former Marvel Editor-in-Chief Roy Thomas, who selects and introduces 12 exemplary tales of mythological mayhem. Showcasing the talents of comic book legend Stan Lee, and including artists Jack ‘The King’ Kirby, Walter Simonson and more. These stories come scanned directly from the original comics, along with an immaculate replica of Thor’s 1962 debut book Journey Into Mystery #83. Sheathed in a signature slipcase stamped with a hammer icon and endpapers designed and illustrated by modern Marvel master John Romita Jr, this is the latest installment in a series of themed collections focusing on some of the world’s most iconic Super Heroes, from Captain America and Spider-Man to the Incredible Hulk.

Inspired by the ancient Norse sagas, Stan Lee, Jack Kirby and Larry Lieber conceived the character of a feeble mortal doctor who – with a tap of his walking stick – could transform himself into the bellicose son of Odin, wielder of the magic hammer Mjolnir. Brought to life by the hyperkinetic art of Jack Kirby, working from a script by Larry Lieber (Stan’s younger brother), Thor debuted in the anthology title Journey Into Mystery #83. First published in the summer of 1962, this seminal comic book has been recreated as an immaculate replica included with this collection. This facsimile also includes three rarely seen tales by yet more legendary Marvel creators: Marie Severin, Don Heck and Spider-Man co-creator Steve Ditko.

Discover the first appearance of Thor’s malevolent adopted brother Loki from Journey Into Mystery #83, freed from his mystic prison to wreak havoc in New York City. Other classic grudge matches included in this collection are Thor’s devastating duels with the Hulk and the Greek god Hercules, the latter an immortal battle royale that launched the first issue of Thor in 1966. Also uncovered are stories by acclaimed writer-artist Walt Simonson, including ‘Doom!’, the first tale from the creator’s famed four-year run on the character. Simonson was responsible for bringing a now-familiar humour to the thunder god’s adventures in tales such as 1986’s ‘Thor Croaks!’, in which the mighty son of Odin finds himself transformed into a pugnacious frog! Concluding this collection are more sombre tales from modern-era Marvel, including the debut of a former love-interest turned thunder goddess. A collection of truly mythic proportions, Thor brings incredible battles, cosmic encounters and surreal humour from one of the most epic characters in the Marvel pantheon.

Orphan & the Five Beasts TPB

Spurred on by her master’s dying words, the adopted warrior “Orphan Mo” seeks to find and kill five former disciples who now threaten the land with corruption from their demonic powers. Part Five Deadly Venoms and part surreal grindhouse, James Stokoe brings his knack for ultra-detailed fantasy imagery and over-the-top violence to this classic tale of revenge. Collects the four-issue miniseries!

We liked it so much that we were quoted on the back cover; “This comic has a cool story with some amazing artwork and I loved it.”

Love and Rockets: The First Fifty: The Classic 40th Anniversary Collection

In celebration of the 40th anniversary of Fantagraphics’ flagship series, this prestigious box set presents bound facsimiles of the original fifty issues of the Love and Rockets comics magazines.

Gilbert and Jaime Hernandez are now recognized as two of the greatest cartoonists in the history of the medium — award-winning, world-renowned, critically acclaimed. But in 1982 when the first issue of Love and Rockets came out, they (occasionally working with their brother, Mario) were two young, struggling, unknown cartoonists who were bucking the dominant comic book trend of costumed characters and adolescent content with intimate, complex, humane, novelistic stories told in comics form. Love and Rockets has appeared in a variety of formats over the years and continues to this day, but the original 50-issue run represents a milestone in comics history. Fantagraphics is celebrating and honoring the 40th anniversary of Love and Rockets and the debut of the Hernandez’s’ first published comics with a gigantic eight-volume slipcase reprinting each issue in a facsimile edition.

Their organic body of work is available in a series of scrupulously and logically organized graphic novels, but here Fantagraphics honors the original quarterly format by presenting the comics as they appeared between 1981 and 1996, recreating not only the reading experience of tens of thousands of fans, but of a particularly fecund period in comics history when a new generation of cartoonists was exploding the idea of what comics could be. Painstakingly recreated in issue-by-issue facsimile, this boxed set includes every cover, comics page, and letter column (even advertising!) in seven hardcover volumes. An eighth volume densely collates selected essays, reviews, and profiles that appeared in the popular (and unpopular) press between 1981 and 1996, along with over 100 pages of additional, rarely-seen comics from the period by all three Brothers, plus dozens of book and magazine covers – a virtual history of the growth of Love and Rockets and the simultaneous rise of the literary comics movement of which they were exemplars and trailblazers.

Readers view the art in its most natural form-blue pencils, ink gradients, and editorial notations all clearly visible-so they can (ahem) marvel at all the little nuances that make original art unique. This volume contains the infamous three-part drug story that was not approved by the Comics Code Authority (Amazing Spider-Man #96-98). The second three-part story features the legendary six-armed Spider-Man saga (Amazing Spider-Man #100-102). Additionally, one of the most famous-and most shocking-Spidey tales is included: the death of Gwen Stacey! (Amazing Spider-Man #121). You can’t get a better line-up of Spider-Man stories than this!

It’s a rainy night in Manhattan and not a creature is stirring except for . . . Ben Grimm. When an intruder suddenly appears inside the Baxter Building, the Fantastic Four—Mister Fantastic (Reed Richards), the Invisible Woman (Susan Storm Richards), the Human Torch (Johnny Storm), and the Thing (Ben Grimm)—find themselves surrounded by a swarm of invading parasites. These carrion creatures composed of Negative Energy come to Earth using a human host as a delivery system. But for what purpose? And who is behind this untimely invasion?

The Fantastic Four have no choice but to journey into the Negative Zone, an alien universe composed entirely of anti-matter, risking not just their own lives but the fate of the cosmos!

Silver: Of Treasures and Thieves

There are only two kinds of objects in this world. The ones that shine and the ones that don’t.

James Finnigan only concerns himself with objects from the first category. Those objects don’t hide in plain sight. They hide in dark places.  When Finnigan loses his grifter gang’s lifetime fortune in a heist gone wrong, he stumbles on a consolation prize in the crypt of the Harker Foundation-a notebook that tells of an ancient, immeasurable treasure, accompanied by a bar of pure silver to prove it. It’s a tall tale, but also Finnigan’s only lead. In an effort to make up for what he’s lost, he mounts the heist of the millennium in search of the Silver Dragon.

Just one catch: The famed treasure is said to be hidden in a castle full of vampires.

Breakdowns: Portrait of the Artist as a Young %@&*!

This legendary 1978 collection of comics by Art Spiegelman, Pulitzer Prize-winning author of the best-selling Maus, presents the seminal early works that changed how comics are made and appreciated today—now with a new Afterword by the author.

Innovative, serious, funny, and many decades ahead of its time, Breakdowns is offered here in its entirety: the long-sought-after collection of the artist’s comics of the 1970s, along with an introduction almost as long as the book it introduces—and just as autobiographically intimate and experimentally daring.

At once the story of an artist and of his medium, Breakdowns alters the terms of what can be accomplished in a memoir.

The Walking Dead Paperback Compendium – Bundle Pack

If your only exposure to The Walking Dead is the television series, get ready to enjoy Robert Kirkman’s original vision. These four massive volumes collect all 193 issues of the series and when purchased from the Skybound site, you can get this $200 book set for under $125!

The world we knew is gone. The world of commerce and frivolous necessity has been replaced by a world of survival and responsibility. An epidemic of apocalyptic proportions has swept the globe, causing the dead to rise and feed on the living. In a matter of months society has crumbled: no government, no grocery stores, no mail delivery, no cable TV. In a world ruled by the dead, the survivors are forced to finally start living.

Keep in mind, this is not the same Walking Dead that you might have watched on AMC. Some major differences include the existence of Darryl Dixon, Rick Grimes keeps his hand, the time frame or circumstances of people dying, the Rick and Micchone relationship, and dozens more. Is one version better than the other? It’s purely in the eyes of the viewer/reader. Regardless, the comic by Kirkman and artists Tony Moore and Charles Adlard, is a bit of a masterpiece and is the perfect gift for any horror fan.

Cinema’s Sci-Fi & Fantasy of the 70’s Print

I’ve been a fan of artist Dusty Abell for over thirty years since he was drew a Superman Annual in 1981. For the past several years he’s been composing these huge illustrations, usually drawing inspiration from his own childhood loves, and like any upstanding member of Generation X, Dusty’s childhood was heavily influenced by science fiction and fantasy films of the Seventies.

Fortunately, he has this print available and would be the ultimate gift for any movie geek. According to Dusty, “This is one of the most elaborate pieces I’ve ever done. It’s an homage to ALL the memorable and often hugely influential Science Fiction & Fantasy films of my youth growing up in the 1970’s. Almost every aspect of the two genres are represented here, from blockbuster spectacles, animated family fare, cerebral hard science fiction, modestly produced B pictures and everything in between! ALL of which contributed to an amazing decade of genre movie making.”

The poster is produced using a 4 color process on 100 lbs. paper stock with an Aqueous base coat and printed in an over-sized 27″ x 40″ movie poster format suitable for framing.

And, to impress the ladies, all you have to do is identify all 140 characters.

And while the country and its music underwent an enormous evolution over the course of those years, the show not only kept up with the times, but it informed them — evidenced by the wide variety of acts fortunate enough to perform live on the stage of Studio 50. From slick-haired snarlers to soulful singing groups to rebellious rockers from across the Atlantic, Ed Sullivan’s musical guests were a who’s who of the era’s popular culture. And today, they’re regarded as some of the greatest artists of all time. The long and winding road of music history is full of forks, but from the 1950s through the early ’70s, one stop was essential: The Ed Sullivan Show.

From rock ‘n’ roll legends to shimmering soul superstars, The British Invasion to Folk Rock, psychedelic pop, and so much more, Ed Sullivan showcased them all on his Sunday Night variety show, week after unforgettable week. This set brings the very best of these performances together in one memorable 10-disc set, featuring 128 live, uncut performances from the greatest performers and musical icons of the 20th century including The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Elvis, The Supremes and so many more.

Sullivan filled his weekly showcase with something for everyone, and he was so successful at it that he became America’s most respected and powerful cultural arbiter. Probably best remembered for introducing America to Elvis Presley across three appearances in the mid-1950s, and the Beatles’ earth-shattering appearances less than a decade later, Sullivan had an uncanny ability to spot top-notch talent and feature them on his show. The performances on this set include chart-toppers and all-time classics such as (in alphabetical order):

E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial 4K Blu-ray: 40th Anniversary Edition

After a gentle alien becomes stranded on Earth, the being is discovered and befriended by a young boy named Elliott (Henry Thomas). Bringing the extraterrestrial into his suburban California house, Elliott introduces E.T., as the alien is dubbed, to his brother and his little sister, Gertie (Drew Barrymore), and the children decide to keep its existence a secret. Soon, however, E.T. falls ill, resulting in government intervention and a dire situation for both Elliott and the alien.

As John Scalzi and others have noted, E.T. in both story and spirit is a remake of The Day the Earth Stood Still. Of my guidebooks, Scalzi’s gives the most substantive and most supportive comments. It’s “an absolutely wonderful film, he says. Thematically, it deals with relationships between family members and friends, but also with the gaps between adults and children. Most importantly, E.T. was the first science fiction film to be unabashedly emotional. “Science fiction films specialize in awe,” Scalzi writes, “but no other popular science fiction film so powerfully expressed common, familial emotions like this one did: love, companionship, the desire to protect those you care for, and the heartbreak of letting go of someone who is part of you.” Good comments, my friend. James Berardinelli gives three stars out of four and feels the film is overwrought (I agree it occasionally feels this way in the final third). But John Stanley notes that “comedy touches keep E.T. from becoming too sentimental… and although the cutie at times seems clumsy and too cute, the cuteness wins you over.”

E.T.’s cuteness would seem to indicate he should be treated like a little companion, perhaps like a pet. Yet Spielberg later commented that the film’s main theme was fatherhood, and that E.T. was a surrogate father for these children who had lost their own: “Someone who knows what they’re thinking and feeling, who can heal them when they’ve been hurt and make them laugh. E.T. is the father that we all wish we’d had or would like to be” (quoted in Guttmacher, page 52). Well, I saw the film at what would seem to be the perfect age (I was 14), and fatherhood was the last thing I thought of. I simply wanted that kind, wide-eyed alien to be my friend. Elliott too treats E.T. as a friend, even as a younger brother. “We could grow up together,” he says.
I love E.T. now, but I didn’t love it at the time.

The film also stars Robert MacNaughton, Dee Wallace, and Peter Coyote. Universally acknowledged as one of the greatest family films of all time, this 40th anniversary edition is packed with supplementary material including a retrospective of the film, TCM Classic Film Festival: An Evening with Steven Spielberg, feaurettes, deleted scenes, galleries, and marketing material.

Amazing Grace: Country Stars Sing Songs of Faith and Hope

There’s always been a strong connection between country and gospel music and never has that bond been more celebrated than on Amazing Grace: Country Stars Sing Songs of Faith and Hope. This comprehensive 10-disc collection spotlights some of the best-loved artists in country music sharing powerful songs of faith that have reverberated inside church walls and concert halls for decades.

For many of country music’s top artists, most of whom were raised in the rural South, the church was an integral part of life, where they learned to use the power of their voice to touch people with a song. It was 1965 when Loretta Lynn released her solo album, Hymns, which became the first of many gospel projects recorded by the country music icon. Throughout his career, Johnny Cash’s faith was dominant in his music, and the Man in Black recorded several well-received gospel albums, which earned him a spot in the Gospel Music Hall of Fame. And it’s that tradition of sharing one’s faith in music that has continued today, as many contemporary country music stars have released gospel albums. In 2006, Alan Jackson gave fans Precious Memories, an award-winning collection that became one of the best-selling albums of the Georgia native’s distinguished career. Josh Turner’s 2018 album, I Serve a Savior, was a natural expression for the young singer-songwriter who has always been vocal about his faith. Alabama is also among the country music icons who have recorded their favorite gospel songs on albums that have become landmark moments in their careers. Faith has also been woven throughout the music of superstars such as Reba McEntire, Martina McBride and Vince Gill, whose classic “Go Rest High on That Mountain” remains one of the Country Music Hall of Famer’s most beloved hits. And it’s projects like these that continue to demonstrate that country and gospel music are kindred spirits, and it’s that life-affirming spirit that inhabits every moment of Amazing Grace: Country Stars Sing Songs of Faith and Hope.

Now for the very first time, home audiences can enjoy live performances by the greatest country artists performing songs of faith and hope, all in one stunning, star-studded collection from Time Life. Highlighted by live performances from Alabama, Vince Gill, Alan Jackson, George Jones, Loretta Lynn, Reba McEntire, The Oak Ridge Boys, Dolly Parton, The Statler Brothers, Randy Travis, Josh Turner and dozens more, they’ve all gone back to their roots to revive such timeless hymns as “Amazing Grace,” “How Great Thou Art,” and “In the Garden.” The collectible set also includes more than a dozen exclusive interviews and a full-color 36-page collector’s book loaded with archival photos. Plus, two bonus DVDs of Opry Gospel Classics, featuring live, historic performances on the iconic Opry stage from classic country stars including Johnny Cash, The Hee Haw Gospel Quartet, Loretta Lynn, Barbara Mandrell, Dolly Parton, Charley Pride, Porter Wagoner, and more, all curated from the archives of The Grand Ole Opry.

Among the 153 incredible live performances that can be found on Amazing Grace are:

  • Alabama – “Let’s All Go Down to the River,” “What a Friend We Have in Jesus,” “Church in the Wildwood,” “The Old Rugged Cross”
  • Alan Jackson – “In the Garden,” “Leaning on the Everlasting Arms,” “When We All Get to Heaven”

DO YOU WANT TO KNOW MORE?

Top Gun: Maverick

How did a thirty year sequel to a film that most viewers under the age of twenty have never heard off become one of the cinematic joys of the year?

After more than thirty years of service as one of the Navy’s top aviators, Pete “Maverick” Mitchell (Tom Cruise) is where he belongs, pushing the envelope as a courageous test pilot and dodging the advancement in rank that would ground him. When he finds himself training a detachment of Top Gun graduates for a specialized mission the likes of which no living pilot has ever seen, Maverick encounters Lt. Bradley Bradshaw (Miles Teller), call sign: “Rooster,” the son of Maverick’s late friend and Radar Intercept Officer Lt. Nick Bradshaw, aka “Goose”.

Facing an uncertain future and confronting the ghosts of his past, Maverick is drawn into a confrontation with his own deepest fears, culminating in a mission that demands the ultimate sacrifice from those who will be chosen to fly it.

In many ways the film structurally repeats the original (but this one also has a significant homage to Star Wars), but has filled the narrative with honest relationships including friendship, obligation, love, duty, and honor. The cast includes well seasoned actors such as Jennifer Connelly, Ed Harris, Jon Hamm, Charles Parnell, Bashir Salahuddin, and Val Kilmer alongside new talent such as Glen Powell, Lewis Pullman, Monica Barbara, Jay Ellis, Danny Ramirez, and Greg Tarzan Davis.

Extras include featurettes and two music videos.

Elf

A holiday favorite from director Jon Favreau. Buddy (Will Ferrell) was accidentally transported to the North Pole as a toddler and raised to adulthood among Santa’s elves. Unable to shake the feeling that he doesn’t fit in, the adult Buddy travels to New York, in full elf uniform, in search of his real father.

As it happens, this is Walter Hobbs (James Caan), a cynical businessman. After a DNA test proves this, Walter reluctantly attempts to start a relationship with the childlike Buddy with increasingly chaotic results.

The cast includes Zooey Deschanel, Bob Newhart, Edward Asner, Mary Steenburgen, Peter Dinklage, Amy Seders, Faizon Love, and Peter Billingsley.

Extras include commentaries, multiple featurettes, trivia track, karaoke, trailer, and deleted/alternate scenes.

A Christmas Story

A cinematic flop that became a cult sensation from director Bob Clark and based on the book and other semi-fictional writings by Jean Shepherd (who also narrated the film).

It’s the final days before Christmas in early 1940s Cleveland, and 9-year-old Ralphie wants one thing from Santa Clause more than anything else: a Red Ryder Carbine Action Air Rifle. As he trudges through the snow to school, faces the neighborhood bully and visits a malevolent department store Santa Claus, Ralphie connives, conspires and campaigns for the most fabulous Christmas present ever in this heartwarming, hysterical and sweetly nostalgic holiday film.

Starring Peter Billingsley, Melinda Dillon, Darren McGavin, Ian Petrella, Scott Schwartz, Ian Petrella , R.D. Robb, and Zack Ward, A Christmas Story is a perennial rewatch and the stunning new 4K UHD also features commentary, featuettes, Jean Shepherd original radio readings, and trailer.

Aqua Teen Forever: Plantasm

Aqua Teen Forever: Plantasm features everyone’s favorite rascals, the Aqua Teens: the brainy Frylock, the mouthy Master Shake, the loveable Meatwad, and everyone’s favorite perverted neighbor, Carl, as they split up then get back together to fight everyone’s favorite corporate overlord, Amazin, led by everyone’s favorite tech mogul, Neil (voiced by everyone’s favorite Peter Serafinowicz) and his trusty scientist sidekick, Elmer (Paul Walter Hauser, who is everyone’s favorite).

Cast includes Carey Means, Dana Snyder, Dave Willis, Natasha Rothwell, Robert Smigel and Tim Robinson.

Extras include deleted scenes, commentary, alternate cut, featurette, and music video.

Ed, Edd n Eddy: The Complete Series

Ed, Edd n Eddy tells the story of three best friends, who band together to tackle life’s most daunting challenge – puberty.

Though they have the same first name and live on the same cul-de-sac in the suburbs, the three youths have very different personalities, which contribute to the confusion, contradiction and just plain awkwardness that defines growing up. This Cartoon Network staple ran from 1999 through 2008.

Voice artists include Matt Hill, Samuel Vincent, Tony Sampson, David Paul Grove, Kathleen Barr, Peter Kelamis, Erin Fitzgerald, Janyse Jaud, Keenan Christensen, Jenn Forgie, Tabitha St. Germain.

A must have for fans, ultimately the set has some serious issues including episodes out of order, episodes are duplicated, and the exclusion the series finale “Ed, Edd n Eddy’s Big Picture Show” (the movie) as well as its three holiday specials: “Ed, Edd n Eddy’s Jingle Jingle Jangle” (Christmas), “Ed, Edd n Eddy’s Hanky Panky Hullabaloo” (Valentine’s Day), and “Ed, Edd n Eddy’s Boo Haw Haw” (Halloween).

Not entirely a complete series, it’s a solid enough release with just enough opportunity for disappointment.

Krypto The Superdog: The Complete Series

It’s the success of the film, DC League of Super-Pets, that made this release of the 2005 short lived series an easy decision.

The Adventures of Ozzie & Harriet started as a radio show in 1944 and transitioned successfully to television in 1952, going on to last 14 seasons! Ozzie, Harriet, David, and Ricky turned their real lives into one of the most cherished TV shows of all time. And now, for the very first time, in association with the Nelson family, the entire series has been digitally restored for its 70th Anniversary with complete episodes from the original film negatives for superior picture quality.

The series was unique as the Nelson family all portrayed themselves in a trend-setting blend of fact-meets-fiction comedy decades before Seinfeld and other semi-reality-based shows. As a matter of fact, the series often was a platform for Ricky Nelson’s burgeoning singing career.

Among the guest stars in the first eight seasons were such recognizable faces as Mary Tyler Moore, Jonathan Harris Sterling Holloway, Jerry Mathers, Alan Hale Jr., John Carradine, Dwayne Hickman, Nancy Culp, Tuesday Weld, Frank Cady, Joe Flynn, Barry Livingston, Donna Douglas, Richard Deacon, Howard McNear, Jackie Coogan, Madge Blake, Janet Waldo, and Hal Smith, in addition to regular guest appearances by Skip Young, Jack Wagner, Lyle Talbot, Frank Cady, and Don DeFore.

The Ultimate Christmas Collection contains 14 episodes 14 full and fun-holiday themed episodes from thoughout the series. plus Rick’s performance of ‘The Christmas Song,” The Ozzie & Harriet Christmas Special reunion from the 1980s and other seasonal treats.

The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet was never particularly groundbreaking, but it is charming and the writing is generally solid. A worthwhile addition to the collection of any classic television fan.
