South Baltimore Environmental Justice Report Launch and Community Meeting
After decades of unaddressed community concerns about dark dust on the outside and inside of homes in South Baltimore - we will share new findings from over a year of investigation. New research along with your voices are critical in the lead up to Maryland Department of Environment and Governor Moore making decisions on CSX's request to renew their operating permit as is. Please mark your calendar and plan to attend this critical meeting in Thursday December 14th for our shared health and environment.
  • Does the dark dust found on residents' homes contain coal dust?
  • How quickly does coal dust accumulate off-site?
  • How far from the terminal is coal dust detectable?
Baltimore is the 2nd largest exporter of coal in the nation accounting for nearly 1/3rd of all coal shipped out of the US. An open air coal terminal operates 24/7 in Curtis Bay just 1,000 feet from the dense residential core of the community. Uncovered coal trains pass throughout Maryland and South Baltimore communities en route to the terminal. Decades of complaints about dark dust linked to the uncovered transport and storage of coal, along with the massive explosion in Dec 2021 have galvanized community demands for environmental justice.
