Donald Trump responded to a barb from debate opponent Hillary Clinton that he hasn’t paid income taxes in a few years by pointing out that makes him “smart.”
“That makes me smart,” Trump retorted, as Clinton speculated as to why he has not released his tax returns, including because he’s not as rich as he claims or not as charitable.
Trump went on to criticize Clinton’s policies as the reason the government is in so much debt. “We owe 20 trillion dollars, and we’re a mess,” he said, adding: “We could have rebuilt our country twice, and it’s really a shame. And it’s politicians like Secretary Clinton that have caused this problem. Our country has tremendous problems. We’re a debtor nation. … And we don’t have the money because it’s been squandered on so many of your ideas.”
“And maybe it’s because you haven’t paid any federal income tax for a lot of years,” Clinton replied, doubling down on her earlier point.
“It would be squandered too, believe me” Trump said.
