POSITION: Student Researcher (Part Time)

Diabetes Prevention for Black Caribbean Communities in New York City

Project Description: This public health project explores whether a community participatory web-based Type 2 Diabetes prevention program using wireless scales and fitness trackers can effectively influence lifestyle, diet and physical activity knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors in Black Caribbean communities in NYC; and automate wireless data collection. We aim to 1) Adapt the CDC’s PreventT2 Diabetes Prevention Program (DPP) curriculum materials to an online/remote format using a community-based participatory research (CBPR) approach; and 2) Test the feasibility and efficacy of an online and smart-device enhanced DPP lifestyle intervention to ensure that it is culturally relevant for Black Caribbean participants.

The project will be informed by a) an expert advisory board consisting of community members, and nutrition and health experts who represent and/or have significant cultural competence collaborating with the Black Caribbean communities in New York City; b) focus groups with community members who will review current materials from the CDC’s PreventT2 curriculum materials; and c) a volunteer student research team.

Primary Responsibilities:

Specific duties include (but may not be limited to):

  • Manage meeting schedules
  • Participate in the preparation of IRB application(s)
  • Recruit participants in person, via phone calls, social media, and over email
  • Schedule focus groups, distribution of program materials and participant gift cards etc.
  • Develop new program materials which may include grocery store/cooking videos, quizzes, etc.
  • Participate in team meetings and brainstorming sessions
  • Conduct background research and literature searches
  • Data entry, data analysis, and data management
  • Administrative duties such as mailing, printing/copying, emailing, etc.

Qualifications:

  • Graduate or undergraduate student pursuing a degree in public health, nutrition, or related fields.
  • Articulate and tactful communications skills; readiness to meet and work directly with community members and research participants. Experience working in Caribbean communities a plus.
  • Experience creating materials in Microsoft (E.g., Word, Excel, PowerPoint), Google Drive (E.g., Docs, Sheets, Forms, Slides), social media, Canva, or equivalent.
  • Ability to follow research protocol, handle, and protect confidential and sensitive data with integrity
  • Generally flexible hours, with at least 10 hours per week.
  • Must be able to work nights and/or weekends both remotely and in person as necessary.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of or familiarity with qualitative research methods (E.g., interviews, focus groups).
  • Experience creating videos, infographics, and health education materials.
  • Knowledge of statistics and experience with software such as SAS, SPSS, or STATA.
  • Completion of a CITI training course in social and behavioral research with human subjects is required for all staff and volunteers involved in this project.

Pay and Benefits:

This position will be appointed as a College Assistant. Pay $20/hr. CUNY offers a comprehensive benefits package to employees and eligible dependents based on job title and classification. Part-time employees must meet a weekly or semester work hour criteria to be eligible for health benefits.

POSITION: Intern

ORGANIZATION: NYU School of Medicine

DEPARTMENT: Population Health

Background

This NIH-funded study, the Rapid Acceleration of Diagnostics for Underserved Populations (RADx-UP) aims to improve SARS CoV-2 testing options for New York city residents living in public housing developments.  Specifically, RADx-Up team members engage New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA) residents and front-line community based organizations to collectively identify and then test models of delivering acceptable COVID-19 testing options. The ultimate goal is to identify effective strategies to reduce COVID inequities in a large, high-need population. Findings will be used to develop guidance for public housing settings nationally.

This project began as Phase I in October 2020.  Now in Phase II, we will testing outreach methods to provide rapid antigen at-home COVID-19 testing kits and recommendations on when to test to youth and young/adult NYCHA residents, as well as socially isolated older adults. Prior to receiving at-home test kits, participants will be required to complete a baseline survey, either through telephone or electronically. To understand socializing and testing practices, participants will complete 5 brief follow-up surveys, once a week, for a total of 5 weeks.

Position Overview

We are seeking intrepid student interns to assist with data collection. This position entails administering surveys to participants over the phone, tracking survey completion, attending community organization meetings and community events, and following up with participants who are missing survey responses or need additional assistance to complete surveys electronically. Interns may assist in data quality assurance and will be trained in data collection tools such as REDCap. This is a great opportunity for those interested in data collection and the experiences of individuals in underserved communities.

Hours

~20 hours/week during the Summer. Flexible daytime and evening hours. Option to stay with project for longer.

Second Chance Studios (SCS) is a nonprofit digital media company that trains and employs formerly incarcerated individuals. Through a full-time, paid fellowship, participants learn essential on-the-job skills and once trained will run a full-service digital media studio delivering video production and audio engineering services. SCS leverages the explosive growth in the new media industry to bring economic empowerment to returning citizens, their families, and communities.

ABOUT THE INTERNSHIP

As Second Chance Studios builds out its core program (our Fellowship) and digital media studio—the first of its kind venture in the United States—the organization is looking to onboard interns to help drive this work forward while gaining impactful professional development.

Reporting directly to the Program Manager, interns will be responsible for various organizational projects and priorities. They will be multi-talented utility players on the team—building strong systems, collaborating with and learning from others, managing a variety of projects simultaneously, and learning to execute on a high level. Interns are a part of the Second Chance Studios team, working closely with the staff, volunteers, program Fellows, and advisors. You can learn more about the team here.

This is a part-time internship, working 5-20 hours/week maximum. While the role is normally based in New York, NY and requires consistent work at the studio, we are also currently offering remote internships.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Work closely with the team to develop relationships with corporate and community partners interested in supporting SCS through employment opportunities, donations, or in-kind support.
  • Conduct online research and compile data to support various initiatives and campaigns, including key partnerships in and adjacent to the criminal justice and reentry community.
  • Support intake and preparation for meetings with prospective funders and partners.
  • Design and deliver communications and marketing materials, including pitch decks, one-pagers, newsletters, the organization’s Squarespace website, and other collateral.
  • Develop and oversee operational infrastructure, systems, and processes that ensure effective program delivery.
  • Manage the organization’s social media strategy and create content for social media channels to increase support for SCS’ work.
  • Collaborate on key projects such as studio procurement and design or organizational budget research.
  • Compile and enter data related to outreach and communication with supporters into Salesforce.
  • Assist with special projects, as assigned by the CEO, including event planning and more.

QUALIFICATIONS & SKILLS

First and foremost, interns must share the team’s sense of urgency about the need to build meaningful opportunities for systems-impacted people, namely those who were formerly incarcerated. The ideal candidate will have the following experience, though we will consider exceptional candidates from all backgrounds:

  • Undergraduate or graduate student in related area (GPA of 3.0 or higher preferred. but not required), recent grad, or someone who prefers hands-on learning to school
  • Excellent oral and written communication/presentation skills
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, start-up, or entrepreneurial environment; experience in criminal justice reform is a plus, but not necessary
  • Exceptional organizational skills with strong attention to detail and follow-through while working under pressure.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Strong time management skills; ability to manage multiple tasks and meet tight deadlines

POSITION: Summer Intern – Department of Health Education

ORGANIZATION: The Mount Sinai Department of Health Education

Public Health and Racial Justice Program for Black Youth in NYC

Program Information:

The Mount Sinai Department of Health Education is proud to offer The Public Health and Racial Justice Program, an innovative health education and empowerment program for high-school aged Black youth in NYC. Over the course of a 6-week, fully remote session, participants learn about the expansive field of public health through a racial justice lens, and explore the roles that Black leadership and Black activism play in fighting against oppression and for greater health equity.

A group of ten youth program participants meet each morning under the guidance of four program facilitators, Monday through Thursday, from 10-11:30am, engaging in learning, critical analysis, civic engagement, creative expression, emotional processing, and reflection.

The 2022 summer session will cover the following public health topics through a racial justice lens:

Week 1: Orientation – Public Health, Racial Justice, and Activism

Week 2: Mental Health and the Black Community

Week 3: Reproductive Justice

Week 4: Black Maternal Health

Week 5: Environmental Justice

Internship Position Information:

Interns have always been a critical component of our program’s success, and we appreciate and depend on them greatly. In addition to contributing to the ongoing evolution of programming activities, we rely heavily on our interns to assist in facilitating small breakout group discussions, which are an essential aspect of our approach to group processing.

Our summer 2022 programming begins on Tuesday, July 5, and runs through Thursday, August 18. Applicants must be available to attend every session, Monday – Thursday, 10am – 11:30am. Applicants with ongoing scheduling conflicts will unfortunately not be considered for these positions. The orientation for interns will be held the week before programming, from Monday, June 27, to Thursday, June 30 during regular programming hours. Attendance at orientation in required.

The pay for this position is an hourly rate of $15/hour, at ten hours per week, for a total of seven weeks.

ORGANIZATION: The Visiting Nurse Service of New York (VNSNY) 

Overview

The Visiting Nurse Service of New York (VNSNY) Government Affairs is seeking a Government Affairs and Public Policy intern from May through August. Responsibilities

Government Affairs sits at the enterprise level of VNSNY, and supports the policy and advocacy needs of the entire organization. The intern will focus on supporting efforts to advocate for important issues that impact VNSNY at both the city, state, and federal levels. Reporting to the Government Affairs Associate, the intern will support all aspects of the department. Specific activities include:

POSITION: Urban Indian Health Institute Internship Program

ORGANIZATION: Urban Indian Health Institute

Each year, Urban Indian Health Institute (UIHI) hosts full-time public health interns to explore public health careers by participating in projects related to epidemiology, clinical services, public health, Indigenous evaluation, and research within urban American Indian/Alaska Native populations. In addition to working with us, interns learn about partner organizations including the Washington State Department of Health (DOH) where they tour the labs and shadow DOH public health professionals.

Why do we have interns?

The internship program creates a space for Native students to build their skills and knowledge of public health and helps train the next generation of public health workers in Decolonizing Data.

The goal is to create a larger network of Native public health students ready to join the workforce and work in Native communities across the nation.

The internship seeks to foster and affirm the identities and knowledge of the next generation of American Indian and Alaska Native public health professionals. Interns will explore a range of public health career opportunities, be trained in Indigenous research methods, and learn how to apply the UIHI values of using Western science to complement traditional knowledge systems. The Polio and Picornavirus Laboratory Branch (PPLB) has responsibility for supporting 1) the domestic polio vaccine program to maintain polio elimination in the United States, and 2) the Global Poliovirus Eradication Initiative (GPEI), which was launched by the World Health Organization (WHO) in 1988 with the aim of eradicating polio worldwide. As a Specialized Reference Laboratory in the Global Polio Laboratory Network, PPLB is increasingly being called on to provide laboratory assistance and technical expertise and support for surveillance and related activities to monitor the impact of polio vaccination. The Polio Molecular and Development Laboratory (PMDDL) is the premier diagnostic assay reference laboratory in the Global Polio Laboratory Network (GPLN). The core work of PMDDL is to develop assays of polioviruses to meet the changing needs of the GPEI, provide support to GPLN laboratories in the form of consultations, training workshops, proficiency panels, and testing kits.

Duties

The incumbent will:

Lead and/or independently conduct biomedical research projects using laboratory methods (both established and adapted) to further the mission of the organization, develop research proposals that demonstrate a thorough understanding of subject matter, relevant literature, research concepts and laboratory techniques in the field of microbiology.

Follow sound laboratory practice and scientific theory when adapting standard operating procedures to address new research questions, analyze data to ensure validity and accuracy using advanced data viz systems. Contribute to the preparation of protocols, SOPs, training materials, or other products that document or communicate technical procedures or findings.

Manage activities of a work group for a specific purpose and defined time, coordinate with team members on work plans, provide oversight of the work of students, less-experienced employees, graduate students and visiting scientists through training and mentoring as needed. Communicate effectively with external partners, internal partners and provide excellent customer service.

Maintain a safe work environment and quality systems in compliance with the CDC Infectious Diseases Laboratories Quality Management System (QMS) and regulatory requirements, actively participates in the continual improvement of the QMS, ensure quality control and upkeep of laboratory and procedures, to include ordering and maintaining equipment and supplies, document control and competency assessments.

Write, analyze, and synthesize research and study results into written documents and/or oral presentations, using tailored communication and data visualization techniques. Communicate oral and written information to various audiences. Prepare research findings, reports, and articles for appropriate audiences/stakeholders, including peer-reviewed publication. Basic Qualification:

Education

Degree: microbiology; or biology, chemistry, or basic medical science that included at least 20 semester hours in microbiology and other subjects related to the study of microorganisms, and 20 semester hours in the physical and mathematical sciences combining course work in organic chemistry or biochemistry, physics, and college algebra, or their equivalent.

Combination of education and experience: courses equivalent to a major in microbiology, biology, chemistry, or basic medical science that included courses as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.

Agency Required Educational Qualifications:

– Doctoral level degree in the fields listed above;
