Calls for Municipal Control of City’s Mass Transit System and Proposes Legislation to Revolutionize City Street Space Planning

New York, NY – New York City Council Speaker Corey Johnson delivered his first State of the City address on Wednesday at LaGuardia Community College in Queens. Speaker Johnson focused on the City’s mass transit crisis, calling for municipal control of New York City’s mass transit system and announcing legislation that would revolutionize the way we plan our street space.

To accompany his calls for a massive shakeup of the way New Yorkers move around the five boroughs, Speaker Johnson released a 104-page report titled Let’s Go: A Case for Municipal Control and a Comprehensive Transit Vision for the Five Boroughs.  The report offers a detailed road map for how each of his proposals could be accomplished.

Speaker Johnson encouraged all 8.6 million City residents to read the report and then join him in the fight for a mass transit system that is efficient, affordable, accountable, and sustainable.

The speech was simultaneously broadcast in Spanish, Mandarin, Cantonese, and French Creole. The transcript is posted on the Council website and can be found via this link. The full Let’s Go report is also available for download on the Council website.

Photos from the speech will be posted at the New York City Council’s Flickr page.
