About Coral-List
English (USA)

Coral-List was founded in 1995 and is funded by NOAA's Atlantic Oceanographic and Meteorological Laboratory, and is guided by the NOAA Coral Reef Conservation Program's strategy for coral reef conservation. For more information, please see:

The purpose of the Coral-List listserver is to provide a forum for Internet discussions and announcements pertaining to coral reef ecosystem research, conservation, and education. The list is primarily for use by coral reef ecosystem researchers, scientists and educators, but is of course open to everybody. As of May, 2019 over 9,900 coral reef conservationists and concerned citizens were subscribed to the list.

Appropriate coral reef ecosystem-related subjects for discussion might include:

  • land-based sources of pollution
  • climate change
  • over-fishing
  • inter-governmental research and conservation efforts
  • socioeconomics
  • outreach and educational programs
  • high predation on coral reefs
  • coral bleaching incidences and research
  • outbreaks of diseases affecting coral reef organisms
  • environmental monitoring sites
  • incidences of reproduction by coral reef organisms
  • shipwrecks on coral reefs and their effects
  • international meetings and symposia
  • marine protected area research and news
  • new coral reef-related publications and reports
  • announcements of coral reef science courses and field trips
  • research and conservation initiatives and opportunities
  • new and historical data availability
  • coral reef ecosystem modeling topics
  • controversial topics in coral reef ecology

  • Occasional digressions will be permitted, if for no other reason than to make reading informative and occasionally humorous. Please just remember to bring it on home to the topics above as the the choppy seas abate.

IMPORTANT! Messages with solicitations of a commercial or political nature, inflammatory commentary and other messages not appropriate for Coral-List venue will not be approved for posting; these are messages categorized as follows:

    - the pursuit of private commercial business activities or profit-making ventures
    - matters directed toward the success or failure of a political party, candidate for partisan political office, or partisan political group
    - prohibited direct or indirect lobbying
    - use of Internet sites that result in an additional charge to the Government
    - engaging in prohibited discriminatory conduct
    - the obtaining or viewing of sexually explicit material
    - any activity that would bring discredit on the Department of Commerce
    - any violation of statute or regulation.

Crowd-funding. We require that any posting of a crowd-funding project contain a statement that says the entity or person making the post will not report a profit from the project to your government. For example, in the U.S. this could take the form of stating that your organization qualifies as tax-exempt under section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code. We ask that you limit yourself to at most two announcements of your funding drive, one at the beginning and one near the end.

Lobbying Prohibited. Internet services (such as e-mail list subscription services) of Department of Commerce organizations shall not be used for direct or indirect lobbying or posting of links to Web pages that engage in such activities. Direct lobbying is defined as encouraging members of the public to contact Congress to support or oppose any pending legislation. Indirect lobbying would be posting links to any Web page that engages in lobbying or encourages such activity, or that engages in lobbying or posting links directly to any page that does.

Profanity prohibited. Coral-List has a zero-tolerance policy regarding the use of profanity in messages sent to our subscribers. Violators of this policy may face consequences ranging from message rejection to the termination of your coral-list subscription, according to moderator discretion, and without possibility of appeal. Please make every effort to choose your words carefully and respectfully.

Please Do Not Post Job Requests and Resumes. As you will see, Coral-List frequently has new employment positions posted. If you try to post a job request or a resume, it will only get deleted. You may wish to see this former post concerning job resources, or visit the Coral-List Archives.

No Binary Attachments. At present, Coral-List is an entirely plain-text medium. Posts with attachments, such as images, PDF documents, or even small logos included in email footers, will usually be rejected by our software and the author will be asked by the moderators to re-submit their message without attachments. This is partly to make it easier to keep our mailings malware- and virus-free, and partly to reduce the burden on our subscribers' email quotas. Note, too, that most fancy formatting (fonts, sizes, styles, bullets, tables, etc.) is auto-converted to plain text before posting.

Any postings made to the Coral-List listserver are not the views of the Federal Government, inclusive of the U.S. Dept. of Commerce, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, and the Atlantic Oceanographic and Meteorological Laboratory.
