Each year, OSPI usually posts WaKIDS data to the Washington State Report Card in January. With the unusual circumstances of 2020 due to COVID and remote learning, the fall 2020 WaKIDS data was not posted. Because of rates of non-participation and the systemic nature of the non-participation, comparisons across schools or districts or over time at the state level were not possible. Fall data from 2020-21 was limited to local, formative assessment use and was not presented by OSPI in aggregate on the State Report Card.
OSPI is pleased to share that WaKIDS data for fall of 2021 is complete enough to be presented on the State Report Card. Participation rates for WaKIDS this fall were closer to normal. Because the deadline for WaKIDS was extended this year, the data will be posted in February 2022.

Transitional Kindergarten (TK) is part of the kindergarten program in Washington State and it requires WaKIDS , as described in the Full Day Kindergarten Statue RCW 28A.150.315, , just like regular kindergarten programs,. TK teachers have usually have 10 weeks from the start date of their program to conduct the WaKIDS assessment. This year, due to continuing impacts of COVID-19, the timeline has been extended.
Administrators
If you haven’t already, please submit a response to this TK Survey that our office utilizes to assist districts implementing TK this school year.
Which districts should submit a response:
- Districts offering TK during the 2021-22 school year
- Districts that are still exploring the idea of TK but have not yet finalized plans. Please select ‘Maybe’ as your answer.
- Districts offering TK during the 2021-22 school year needing support with WaKIDS data is due.
Your responses will let our office know where to invest technical assistance and allocate appropriate child portfolios in MyTeachingStrategies®. Also, the survey will tell you exactly when your TK data is due. TK WaKIDS data is due 12 weeks from the program start date.
TK teachers
We recommend that you use the Development and Learning Report in MyTeachingStrategies® when generating reports, especially to use as a conversation tool with families and specialists. This report does not display the purple color band, which is designed for 5-year-old kindergarten students. The Development and Learning Report focuses on what skills and abilities the child is able to demonstrate and provides what skills to work on.
The last WaKIDS 101 training of the year will begin February 1. This training is exclusively for Transitional Kindergarten (TK) teachers and regular kindergarten teachers who complete the WaKIDS checkpoint three times per year. Regular kindergarten teachers new to WaKIDS who will complete WaKIDS in fall 2022 may attend our summer 2022 trainings, which will be posted in April 2022.
We also have re-opened trainings for administrators, veteran teachers, and support staff. These trainings are optional, but we encourage anyone who is eligible to participate!
Please check out our website for more information.
Transitional Kindergarten Exploration, Planning and Installation Grant
It’s Not Too Late to Explore, Plan, and Install Inclusionary Practices in Transition Kindergarten
OSPI is pleased to announce the Inclusive Transitional Kindergarten Exploration, Planning and Installation Grant, a competitive grant, open to all school districts with demonstrated need for Transitional Kindergarten. This grant opportunity is intended to increase assess to Transitional Kindergarten for students with disabilities, providing $40,000, for schools to equip classrooms and educators with the tools and resources needed to establish inclusive TK programs.
As this is a grant to support early stages of implementation, OSPI extended the deadline to February 8, 2022, at 4:00 p.m. in iGrants Form Package 181. Both FP 181 and FP 182 provide districts with tailored support from ESD Implementation Specialists.
Districts will have until 4 pm on February 8, 2022 to complete the survey and upload three letters of recommendation to page 2 in FP 181.
