WIDA Transition Timeline for Standards, Professional Learning & Assessments

Policy Update:

The WIDA Screener for Kindergarten will be used for all students entering kindergarten in 2021–22. The WIDA Screener for Kindergarten is designed to be developmentally sensitive and is given no earlier than 30–60 days before the first day of school. Learn more about the WIDA Screener for Kindergarten. Given the developmental sensitivity of the screener, Washington State will no longer permit screening of entering kindergarten students before July 1st. The WIDA Screener for Kindergarten will be available in Washington State in August 2021.

WIDA English Language Development Standards and Professional Learning

April – August 2021: Virtual professional learning, Introduction to the WIDA English Language Development Standards Framework, will be offered for all K–12 educators, administrators, and educator preparation faculty in the state. The 2-hour virtual workshop will be offered over 70 times to accommodate schedules. Dates/times will be posted soon.
August 2021: K–12 WIDA English Language Development Standards Framework will be used for all English language development instruction. Learn more about the WIDA English Language Development Standards Framework, 2020 Edition.

Annual English Language Development Assessment

March 22 – June 4, 2021: Assessment window for the annual ELPA21 and WIDA Alternate ACCESS assessments.
For 2020–21 School Year Only: All newly enrolled students and students who are possibly eligible and returning to in-person instruction during the annual assessment window, may take the annual ELPA21 in place of the ELPA21 Screener.
For 2021–22 School Year Only | Students with Significant Cognitive Disabilities whose IEP Teams Recommend an Alternate Assessment: When returning to in-person instruction, possibly eligible students with significant cognitive disabilities must take the ELPA21 Screener with accommodations and the WIDA Alternate ACCESS annual assessment.
December 2021 – End of 2022 Test Window: Asynchronous professional learning on the annual WIDA ACCESS English language proficiency assessment and refresher professional learning on the annual WIDA Alternate ACCESS.
Spring 2022: Use the annual WIDA ACCESS and WIDA Alternate ACCESS English language proficiency assessments.

2021–22 School Year Kindergarten Screening

WIDA Screener for Kindergarten (paper-pencil assessment) will be used to screen all possibly eligible, 2021–22 kindergarten students.
Screening will begin in August 2021 rather than May 1^st as was permitted in previous years. The WIDA Screener for Kindergarten is developmentally sensitive and is designed to be given no earlier than 30–60 days before the first day of school. Learn more about the WIDA Screener for Kindergarten.
Kindergarten Students with Significant Cognitive Disabilities whose IEP Teams Recommend an Alternate Assessment: Will take the WIDA Screener for Kindergarten with accommodations.
May 2021 – 2021–22 School Year: Asynchronous professional learning on the WIDA Screener for Kindergarten.

2021–22 School Year Screening for Grades 1–12

August 2021: All newly enrolled students and students returning to in-person instruction who are possibly eligible students in grades 1–12 will be screened with the WIDA Screener. The WIDA Screener will be online with a small supply of paper-pencil screeners to be used only with students who do not have basic computer literacy skills, e.g., never used/very limited exposure to computers or unfamiliar/unable to control a mouse or touchpad.
Students with Significant Cognitive Disabilities whose IEP Teams Recommend an Alternate Assessment: Will take the WIDA Screener with accommodations.
May 2021 – 2021–22 School Year: Asynchronous professional learning on the WIDA Screener.

Introduction to WIDA ELD Standards Framework, 2020 Edition Saturday, March 27, 2021 9:00 – 11:00 AM (eligible for 2 Washington State OSPI approved clock hours)

In this session, Dr. Boals and Dr. Kray present an overview of the updated WIDA ELD Standards Framework, 2020 Edition, which leverages a functional approach to language development, prioritizing language as purposeful, meaning-making resource, and offering educators practical materials to attend to language development in explicit and systematic ways. The presenters will provide examples of how these language standards promote classroom engagement for language and content learning.
