Murray Bartlett
Supporting Actor Limited Series (“The White Lotus”)
How are you feeling today?
I’m feeling pretty great, as you can imagine. Just a little ecstatic.
The entire cast of “The White Lotus” got a ton of nominations this morning. How are you feeling about sharing that moment with your ensemble together?
It feels right. That it’s not one of us or two of us singled out because it’s such an ensemble piece, including the musicians who worked on the show and Mike [White] of course. So it feels like, if any of us are going to be nominated, all of us should be nominated. And it seems like almost all of us are. So it’s thrilling and fantastic. And I’m so happy for Mike, particularly, but for everyone. It’s so well deserved. There’s not a weak link in the show. It’s beautiful to see everyone getting some love for it.
Were there any nominations outside “The White Lotus” that you were happy to see today?
I adore Laura Linney, I’m a huge fan of “Ozark”, and I think she’s absolutely spectacular in that show. I got to work with Laura a few years ago on “Tales of the City,” so on a personal level, I just think she’s an exceptional human.
What are you working on next? Where can your fans from “The White Lotus” see you in the future?
At the moment, I’m wrapping shooting on another limited series called “Welcome to Chippendales. That’ll be out later in the year, in November. And I’m also doing the HBO adaptation of “The Last of Us.” It doesn’t come out until next year, but it’s an amazing team working on it. And it’s a beautifully crafted show. I think the scripts are amazing, and I love what I got to do in that show.
Were you a fan of “The Last of Us” before you joined the cast? Do you play video games at all?
I don’t know if it’s me or if it’s like my generation, but I’m not a gamer and I’m not very plugged into that world. But as soon as that job came up, and I mentioned it to people, they just gasped. And then when I dug into it, I mean it’s a phenomenon on many levels. It seems to be a game that people really respond to on a deep emotional level. It’s very cinematic and beautiful. So I gained a strong appreciation for it, but I’m not in that gaming world. So I was new to it when the job came up.
Obviously, you’re not going to be in future seasons of the White Lotus on account of Armond dying…
Well, you never know. Mike had joked to me about another season where we go back in time. I think that was a joke, but I like to think that it wasn’t, so we’ll see.
I would love to see it. We know the second season is taking place in Italy. Where do you think future seasons should be set?
I wonder whether Mike just invented this show so he could spend time in incredibly gorgeous places. So I think it’s going to be somewhere incredibly gorgeous if it goes into other seasons. Maybe somewhere, beautiful in Morocco or Portugal or some phenomenally gorgeous place that Mike gets to spend a few months in.

Lucia Aniello, Paul Downs and Jen Statsky – 'Hacks'
Congratulations on 17 nominations for “Hacks.” Is there anyone that you were particularly happy to see nominated?
Paul Downs: I mean, we are so proud of all of our departments because there are so many incredibly talented people that make this show. And to have 17 nominations is just so gratifying because there’s so many people that worked in front of and behind the camera. So to have them recognized, it just feels so good for us.
Lucia Aniello: Everyone works so hard on the show so it’s amazing. But I mean, it’s, it’s hard not to single out every single one. But, you know, I’m really excited for Chris McDonald. I think it’s his first Emmy nomination. What an incredibly hilarious, awesome, amazing person and such a sweetheart and so deserving. So excited to see Kaitlin Olson being recognized. She’s so fantastic on the show. We’re so excited to have her as part of our cast. There’s really too many people to single out.
Jen Statsky: It’s very cool that, you know, actors who’ve been doing this like a really long time, to see them get recognized like Harriet Sansom Harris or Chris McDonald. Like that’s, that’s incredibly rewarding and satisfying.
Were there any nominations outside your show that you were really excited to see get recognition?
Downs: We were cheering for “Nailed It.”
Both: We love Nicole Byer.
Downs: She’s a good friend and we’re so happy for her.
Aniello: Doug Mand and Dan Gregor for Chip and Dale movie. We love that movie. We love them, we love it.
Would Nicole ever make an appearance on “Hacks”?
Statsky: If we’re lucky, if we’re lucky. She’s the funniest. I worked with her when she was on “The Good Place.” She is the funniest and we love her.
Was there anything from working on the last season that you experienced that you don’t want to do again?
Statsky: I would say in the end, our partners at Royal Caribbean were incredibly helpful. But I would say I won’t write an episode on a cruise ship again anytime soon. Because that proved to be a production challenge in the thick of COVID.
What is most important to both of you for going into Season 3? What are you keeping in mind?
Aniello: We just want to keep going, baby. The audience has been so generous with us and with the show that we just want to make everybody happy while still sticking to the vision of the show that we’ve always wanted to make.
Downs: For us it was a real challenge to make Season 2 live up to the response we had Season 1 and the fact that people in many cases felt like it was even stronger just makes us want to make Season 3. We want to raise the bar even more as we continue.
Aniello: We want to get better with age.

Sydney Sweeney
Supporting Actress Limited Series (“The White Lotus”); Supporting Actress Drama (“Euphoria”)
How are you doing today? Congratulations on your double nomination!
Thank you. I’m doing just fine. I’m honestly kind of out of words. I don’t know what to say.
One of the shows you were nominated for, “The White Lotus,” saw a lot of the cast get recognition. How does it feel to share that moment together?
We are just cheering each other on in our group chat. And we are so proud of one another. We’re so excited to be able to be sharing this moment with each other. It’s such a beautiful and lovely cast and experience that we had. So it’s great to see good people get to enjoy this.
You’re not going to be in the second season, but are you interested in going back to “The White Lotus” for a future season?
I would love to be back. I love working with Mike White, I think he’s such an incredibly talented writer and director and he’s such a joy to work with. You’re really laughing every day.
Season 2 is going to be in Italy. Any ideas for where future seasons should take place?
I mean Italy is one of my favorite places in the world so I’m a little bummed I missed that. Where should we go? I feel like if I say it, it could happen. so I want to make sure I choose very wisely. Spain could be fun. Japan could be interesting. Maybe like a safari jungle cruise through Africa.
Do you have any idea when “Euphoria” begins shooting again? What are you looking forward to doing with Cassie after the very messy season she had this year?
We will all be getting back together soon. I don’t know if I can actually say when, but soon. I’ve fallen in love with Cassie, and she’s on such a crazy roller coaster. I selfishly hope that she might still be on the ride, it’s really fun for me to be able to stretch my legs and challenge myself in that way. But I believe and trust Sam [Levinson] and what he does with these characters in the story. So I’m just excited to see what’s next.
Were there any shows outside of the two you were in that you were happy to see get recognized this morning?
I’m always a huge “Succession” fan. And I love “Ozark” so I’m really happy for Julia Garner, I think she is beyond talented. “Yellowstone” didn’t get anything, did they?
No, “Yellowstone” didn’t get anything.
I was cheering for “Yellowstone.” I feel like “Yellowstone” got snubbed.
What other projects are you working on? What can fans see you in coming up?
Currently I’m filming “Madame Webb.” And I can’t really say anything about my character, but I’m very excited. My first Marvel movie. So it’s been a lot of fun, a lot of training and just prep work to get into it and then I previously just finished “National Anthem” directed by Tony Toast from Bron studios. So I’m very excited for that character. Her name is Penny Joe, and she was a cute, sweet-hearted character. I loved her.
-
Melanie Lynskey
Lead Actress Drama (“Yellowjackets”)
How are you feeling?
I feel very overwhelmed. This is not a normal experience for me. So it’s a lot. I’m trying to be present.
Have you been talking to your fellow Yellowjackets?
I have. Tawny [Cypress] texted me immediately. And I texted Christina, Christina and I are so excited and then all the young girls are sending messages. It’s really sweet. Like the most supportive cast of all time. [Sophie Nelisse] sent me the sweetest message and I mean, honestly, I just love them all so much. The best part about it is that the show got nominated and we can all celebrate together. It’s just like, so exciting.
Was there anything that you were excited about outside of Yellowjackets?
There was one I was bummed about because I voted for Britt Lower. She’s such a genius. Next year, I trust that it will happen. But I was so thrilled for Adam Scott. I just think he’s wonderful. And Sarah Paulson is a very dear friend of mine. I thought she was so incredible in that show and I’m really happy that she felt recognized for that performance. Hamish Patel for “Station Eleven” was so exciting.
Your husband, Jason Ritter, was on “Candy” with you and you had said that you would love for him to be on “Yellowjackets.” Has there been any movement on that? There hasn’t been. I don’t know. He was like, “Oh god, why would you say that?”
I know you’re starting filming for Season 2 soon. What is Shauna most worried about?
I haven’t read any scripts. And I’m constantly surprised by the scripts. They always take it in a direction that is more interesting than anything I could have imagined. So I don’t know. I don’t really know what is going to be happening with Shauna. I would imagine that she would be slowly coming to terms with the fact that she killed her lover and covered it up — my personal feeling is that’s not going to stay a secret. It’s so amazing to be on a show where whatever I’m doing the moment, I see that script pop up on the email, I just read it instantly. I cannot wait to read them.
The show has obviously been so great with casting actresses from the ‘90s. Is there anyone that you would love to see on a future season of the show?
For some reason Robin Tunney, because she was such a great support for me when we were starting out in the ‘90s. She had a much fancier agent than me and she was always showing the scripts that she was getting to audition for and being like, “You should go out for this!” and she was so supportive and lovely. I just thought of Robin, but I mean, there’s any number of people, of course.
How are you celebrating today? Do you have any plans?
I think we’re gonna go out and buy a fridge. Very glamorous. I think Best Buy.
Well, I hope it’s the best fridge you’ve ever had.
Thank you, I might like level up a little bit on the fridge. I’m feeling extra fancy.

Bill Hader
Leading Actor, Comedy (“Barry”); Guest Actor, Comedy (“Curb Your Enthusiasm”)
How are you feeling today?
Good. Right now I’m on my way for a location scout for “Barry” Season 4, so that’s where I’m headed, sitting in traffic. We start shooting in three weeks.
Oh wow. Have you finished writing the season yet?
No. Writing never wraps. I’m constantly writing. We’re in prep right now, so it’s kind of a combination of everything. And then just the general excitement slash anxiety of getting started. So it’s a weird countdown to when we start.
Are there any shows nominated outside of “Barry” you were excited to see?
Martin Short and Steve Martin. And also Sudekis, who I used to work with. “Hacks” and “Abbott Elementary,” that’s one that my kids and I really liked. “What We Do In the Shadows” I was really excited to see get nominated. My friend Hiro Murai got nominated for “Atlanta,” which I thought was also unbelievable this season. And I’m excited for our team too. Stunts and Carl Herse our DP and Franky Guttman our editor. It’s a nice morning and it’s nice seeing all these things that I’m genuinely a fan of be in the same category.
You were also nominated for your guest star role in “Curb Your Enthusiasm.” What was that experience like for you?
That’s so funny because it was the first post-pandemic thing I did. So that was my first time shooting something where we got tested and we were wearing masks and the new normal. So I was happy to be doing something with Larry [David]. I mean, it falls in your lap, one of your favorite shows, that was pretty insane.
“Documentary Now!” is returning this fall. Will you be acting in it again?
No, I’m not acting in it. I’m too busy with “Barry.” That show’s very much Alex Bono and Rhys Thomas. I’m still an executive producer on it, but I won’t be on it. But I’ve seen episodes, and they’re amazing.
Any other projects you have cooking besides “Barry” Season 4 you can talk about?
Nothing I can talk about. I’m in the “Barry” world. I barely have time to think about what I want for lunch, much less other projects.

Quinta Brunson and Channing Dungey
Quinta Brunson, Outstanding Comedy Series, Lead Comedy Actress, Outstanding Writing for a Comedy Series (“Abbott Elementary”) and Channing Dungey, Group Chairman of Warner Bros. Television Group
Channing, what has the success of “Abbott Elementary” meant to you as the leader of WBTV? How has this show impacted your strategy moving forward?
Channing Dungey: It shows you that great storytelling can exist in any medium, on any platform. People like to poopoo on broadcast, but seeing how “Abbott Elementary” has resonated not just with the viewing public — from a ratings and buzz perspective — but the fact that it’s also now being recognized as critically acclaimed, is really wonderful.
[Brunson’s voice appears on the call]
Brunson: Guys, I just want to let you know that I’m here. It feels weird when you know someone’s talking about you but they don’t know you know they’re talking about you!
Dungey: Hi! Oh my gosh, Quinta! Congratulations! Congratulations! I don’t even know what to say; I’m over the moon for you!
Brunson: I’m over the moon too. Before we even start, thank you, Channing. For believing in this show. You know how I feel about you. It matters.
Dungey: Our relationship with you goes way back to that pilot you were doing with Justin [Halpern] and Patrick [Schumacker, who both executive produce the show], and it’s so funny that this is now full circle, and you’re all working on “Abbott” together. Right from the beginning, I recognized not only how smart the writing was, how genuinely funny the material was, but the notion of centering teachers as everyday heroes. As a mom of small kids who had to do a fair amount of homeschooling during the prime pandemic year of 2020, I respected teachers before, but my respect increased tenfold. Our job as a studio is always to make sure that our creative talent feels supported and has the room to do their best work, to make sure that the vision that they have doesn’t get compromised along the way. And that’s what the team and I have been working hard to do.
Quinta, you’ve made history today as the first Black woman to get three comedy nominations in the same year. How does that make you feel?
Brunson: Ah! I saw that headline on Variety, and I have not been able to comprehend that part. What I can say is everyone on “Abbott” works so hard. They push themselves into new positions, from our actors, to our writing staff, to our production and art department, hair makeup, everyone. It’s very often that this work is overlooked. And while awards aren’t most important thing in the world to me, I really did want the people who worked on this show to feel recognized for all the hard work they put into it. All of the nuance, and our commitment to making people have a good time for 22 minutes. I really have no words. I am currently driving to the WB, just ready to go back to my wonderful staff and celebrate.
Having you here with Channing feels like a special moment to recognize what these nominations represent for both your show and the industry. How does it impact your workflow and comfort to be making this show at a studio led by a Black woman?
Brunson: There are there ways that you need to be supported that you don’t even realize until you have that support. Channing did that for us. I love the way, Channing, that you step in for the people you represent. Specifically, stepping in to create the vision, knowing we still have to make things that make money, it’s a special skill. At the end of the day, the TV industry is a business, and we’re trying to make our vision as close to what we want it to be while still acknowledging network standards and practices. It can get weird, what people want you to sacrifice, and Channing stepped in in a way that’s hard to articulate. I imagine in five years, I’ll be able to say. What makes her invaluable is the things that you can’t articulate, because if you could, everyone would be able to do it.
Dungey: I’m blushing!
Who are the nominees you’re rooting for, outside of your own work?
Brunson: My honest answer is someone in my category. Jean Smart. I think she deserves it! If she weren’t in that category, I would have been like, “Nah. Jean was snubbed.” Even though she should be my competition! And I was really happy to see Issa [Rae] nominated for the last season of “Insecure” —
Dungey: Yes!Brunson: And if I may, Sheryl Lee Ralph. She’s on my show, I know, I worked on it! But as someone who has followed her career and knows what kind of person she is, [“Abbott Elementary”] was a change for her! It was so inspiring to watch this woman who has been doing this for years take this opportunity and be like, “I’m so excited to learn and become a new version of myself!” I’m so happy she was recognized.
Dungey: I echo everything Quinta just said. And I’m really happy for Margaret Qualley. The work she did in “Maid” was spectacular.

Tyler James Williams
Supporting Actor, Comedy (“Abbott Elementary”)
How are you feeling this morning?
I’m shocked, excited, humbled, all of that. I thought Quinta would get nominated. But that’s about as far as I could imagine, like in the best possible world, that’s as far as it would go. So this is more than a blessing.
I love TV, man. I’m all about building arguments over time. I didn’t expect it this time, because this category was rough! Some great performances this year. And you know, I thought I did well, but I wasn’t sure I’d make the cut. The highest honor is to have the recognition of your peers, and to be able to say, “I was able to work in the time of these other great performers.” To have my name listed with Henry Winkler almost feels sacrilegious!
You’re known to get quite nerdy about TV history and numbers. What’s your analysis coming away from today’s nominations?
Network TV can still play in this game. We can still generate quality content that holds with the streamers. Also, you would be a fool to underestimate Quinta Brunson at this point. You would be a straight fool. We are in platinum age of TV, where there’s so much good content on all of the platforms. I don’t think any showrunner or someone getting ready to pitch should count out any place. You have a chance to have your work thrive in any location. Network had been left out of that conversation for a very long time. And for us to come in and get seven nominations for a 13-episode, network, mid-season show lets you know that you have a shot. I think the industry itself will look at this and adjust accordingly.
Who are you rooting for this Emmy season besides “Abbott Elementary”?
I’m always a “Ted Lasso” fan, so anybody from that. The cast of “Hacks” as well. And the one that I would love is to see is a win for Colman Domingo [nominated in the drama guest actor category for “Euphoria”]. He’s the name that I’ve been waiting to see in this conversation for some time. I saw his before I saw mine, and was ecstatic. Brilliant actor, who always has done brilliant work, but particularly for that role. I felt the same way with I “I May Destroy You” [at the 2021 Emmys]. Like, “If anything’s right with the world, this will happen.” I really hope he takes home a win for this one.
And back to your work, is there anything we should be looking forward to besides Season 2 of “Abbott Elementary”?
Right now, that’s my singular focus. “Abbott” is where my head’s at. Over hiatus, they called me to do “History of the World Part II,” which was great, just to be in that grouping of people, but when I get locked into a show, particularly when we’re looking at 22 episodes, I try to keep that my singular focus. One job at a time. Let’s make Season 2 as good as Season 1, if not better.
-
Nicholas Braun
Supporting Drama Actor (“Succession”)
How are you feeling this morning?
I’m so excited. It’s a really cool feeling. I mean, last time was amazing, but … I’m not a good speaker right now! I’m so all over the place emotionally. But it’s good! It was a nice progression in Season 3 in terms of Greg getting a bit of an edge — getting tossed through the wringer and coming out of it with a bit more self respect, a little more swagger. Like, spitting game at a countess in the finale. Willing to go to the dark side, whatever that even means to him. It was a nice season for leveling up and maturing, if you will.
What was your favorite of Greg’s one-liners in Season 3?
In the second episode, telling Kendall, “I’m kinda too young to be in Congress so much!”
What should we look forward to in Season 4? Will Greg and Tom (Matthew Macfadyen) finally close their end of the love triangle?
You know, it’s a great friendship. I’ll say that. Those two guys, the more they go through together, the closer they get. We’ll leave it at that.
That’s all you’re gonna say?
Maybe they’re … you know … I can’t! I can’t! I’m so afraid to say too much. But I will say we’ve already filmed a few scenes which are some of my favorite of the Tom and Greg … what should we call that? Era? The Tom and Greg era? There’s definitely a nice evolution for us.
Outside of “Succession,” what’s in your career are you most excited about?
I shouldn’t talk about it because it hasn’t been released, but some really exciting news in terms of … a different part of my career. But I filmed a movie called “Cat Person” in the fall, and I think it’s just one of the most special scripts.
-
Hannah Einbinder
Supporting Comedy Actress (“Hacks”)
What was your reaction to seeing that “Hacks” topped last year’s number?
I mean, so cool. I didn’t even know there were 17 awards to give out. It’s so crazy. So cool.
Was there anyone from the show that you were happy to see get some recognition this year?
Kaitlin Olson, who is one of the great comedic performers of our time. Her work on this show and obviously on “It’s Always Sunny.” She’s one of the most incredible comedic performers I’ve ever been able to watch work and so this is long overdue and very well deserved.
Was there anything that you got to do the last season that you’re kind of like, “I’m never doing that again?”
Well, the truth is, I’ll do whatever they ask me to do. If it’s in the script, I’m doing it. But I mean, Lucia and Paul and Jen have been such supportive and loving leaders and they always make sure that I’m comfortable with everything. Even though I’m always like, I will do whatever you guys want me to do.
How did it feel to you seeing the way the second season closed out, and knowing that there will be a third? It sent me into a total spiral. I cried for like two hours and was just like, “Oh my god, I knew it. I’m being written off the show.” That was my internal monologue when I read that, and I was also just like, “Oh, my God, all my friends are gonna keep hanging out. They’re gonna go get pizza without me and I’m not going to be a part of this.” I definitely finally believe that I’m not fired. But yeah, that was a shock for me, as well as I’m sure many viewers right there with you.
From other shows outside of “Hacks” was there anything that you were happy to see nominated or that you felt got snubbed?
I was so stoked to see “What We Do In The Shadows” get nominated. Issa Rae for “Insecure.” And I mean, truthfully, all of the guest actor awards within “Hacks.” Chris McDonald, Laurie Metcalf, Harriet Sansom Harris, Kaitlin Olson, Jane Adams, watching these people work has just been so cool, and they’re all so incredible. Also, all the folks at “Abbott Elementary,” I fucking love that show and Quinta is such a good pal from stand up and that world, so I’m just stoked for her.
Who is your dream stand-up appearance on Season 3?
It would be cool if Sarah Silverman was a guest, that would be sick. I love Sarah, she’s one of my favorite comics alive, so that would be cool.
-
Henry Winkler
Supporting Actor, Comedy (“Barry”)
First off, congratulations. How are you doing today?
You know what, it’s really exciting. Because I knew that this season was crazy. And here we are talking today. It’s just amazing.
Are there any TV shows outside of “Barry” that got nominated this season that you’re happy to see recognized this morning?
My wife and I love television. I’ve seen everything that has been nominated. And how do you pick the best out of that? “Abbott Elementary,” when I saw it originally, I thought “Oh my god, this young lady stars in it, wrote it, casted it so beautifully.”
I talked with Bill Hader earlier this morning, and he told me—
Was he happy for me? If he wasn’t happy for me, I’m not happy.
He’s very happy for you. Of course.
I love him. I love him so much I can’t stand it.
He told me Season 4 starts shooting in three weeks. Have you read the scripts yet?
I read four of them. And I only have one question. Every season. I call Bill and I say, “Bill. Am I dead?” And he goes “No!” And then I feel very good.
Can you say anything about where Cousineau goes after that Season 3 finale?
No. Because he literally stationed a guard in my house. He’s bugged the house. He knows if I ever give any detail away.
You play an acting teacher in “Barry.” What was the biggest acting lesson you learned from this past season?
If I were really an acting teacher, I would say concentration, relaxation and listening is the beginning and the end. It’s the beginning and the end of relationships, listening to the other person, and it will tell you so much about what’s going on in that scene.
-
Janelle James
Supporting Comedy Actress (“Abbott Elementary”)
How are you feeling?
Pretty good. Pretty good. What happened?
Do you guys have a group chat? Are you all talking to each other?
Well, I try not to talk too much because I have an Android and they yell at me. But today I was allowed to speak in the group chat.
Do you have any plans for celebration?
I actually don’t, I’m so basic. I don’t know, I might get a massage. I’m open to suggestions about how I should celebrate but this whole year has been a celebration for me. So I’m chilling.
Are you on set for “Abbott” right now?
No, no, I’m doing another thing.
And you started shooting Season 2, right?
We haven’t started yet. We’ve started pre-production, but we start shooting next week.
So what are you most excited about coming back for Season 2?
I mean, everything. The first season was kind of a whirlwind. I’m just excited to come back as Emmy nominees. That’s a whole new feeling with a new joy and just excited to work with everybody again, like it was a fun gig and maybe the second time in my life I’m happy to go back to work.
Is there anything that you really want for Ava to do or something you’ve been wanting to play as Ava?
I really like for Ava, just when she says and is into things that you wouldn’t even think that she would say or be into, such as doomsday prepping, being really into the X-Men (which is a thing that I am into as Janelle James. I love the X-Men). I just hope she just keeps revealing more off-the-wall hobbies and interests. And then we see more about those things. I like that she’s not one thing, she’s not just fancy outfits and disrespecting children.
Is there anything you would never do as Ava? Any big no’s?
Nothing I can think of. I trust Quinta totally, so even if I did I don’t think it would come up. But I mean, I fell out of a chair multiple times even though I’ve hurt my back on a set before. Apparently I’ll do anything. I was offered a stunt double and I was like no, I get the laughs myself.
A true physical actor.
Yeah, like they won’t know how to fall funny. I’m a comedian. I was like, I know how to fall in the comedic way. Thus far there hasn’t been anything that I won’t do. Like most clowns, professional clowns, I’d do anything for the laugh.
So many of your lines have become viral sensations. Do you have a favorite is or is there a line that you still use or like think about a lot?
A lot of the things that made me happy are not necessarily a line, but little things that I added as an actress, because the funny is coming from the writers room. The scripts are coming to us already funny, and then we add our spice to it. Of course, “back my tasty ass up.” That was the first ad-lib that I got through. Ava isn’t on screen as often as people maybe think she has been since I’ve been memed so much, but I’m glad that when I am I’m landing it, so that makes me happy.

Steve Martin and Martin Short
Lead Actor, Comedy (“Only Murders in the Building”)
How are you two feeling today?
Martin Short: Very happy for the show.
Steve Martin: Yeah, we’re very happy we got a lot of nominations. We’re a little dismayed that Selena [Gomez] didn’t get nominated because she’s so crucial to the trio, to the show. She kind of balances us. In fact, in some ways you can say that we got nominated because of her balance in the show. But we’re happy that she is nominated as executive producer on the show. She’s a big asset for us.
Have you talked with her at all since the nominations have come out?
Martin: No, I think I keep seeing her tweeting from Europe.
Short: I think she’s in Europe.
Martin: And you know, the communication is so slow, I think it takes five days to get a letter there.
You guys currently have Season 2 airing and Season 3 is already a go. What are you looking forward to people seeing, both with this season and the next?
Short: This season I think we have a very good mystery going. And, you know, there’s a great ensemble of actors. I mean, Episode 3 was really all about Jayne Houdyshell. So I love how the show does that, gives focus to certain characters that may not be in it as much normally. Season 3, what are we looking for in Season 3?
Martin: Well, I’ll tell you. I think that people would say about Season 2, they say “how do you top Season 1?” We’re not trying to top Season 1. We’re just trying to equal it. John Hoffman leads a great team of writers. And we’re always surprised when we read the script. It surprises us, it’s going to surprise the audience. Well, Marty is never surprised because he has no emotions.
Short: I wake up heavily emotionless and I continue on.
Martin: When you hold your grandchild, your little baby grandchild, do you feel any emotion at all?
Short: It could be a log of wood from the fireplace.
Martin: A log of wood with a little face on it.
Short: Yeah, that someone has sketched, and I put it right in the fire.
Martin: Yeah, you wouldn’t know.
Do you guys know when production begins for Season 3? Is it all written?
Martin: No. I don’t think it’s written and we’re not starting shooting until January so we have plenty of time.
Short: I mean, there’s so many tentacles to each script. Something on script one is crucially affecting script nine. So they have to work out the whole journey before we start shooting.
Martin: For the end of this season, we have a teaser for next season. So you have to have a story in your head already to make a teaser for … I got lost. There’s so many seasons. I can’t, you know.
Short: Believe me, nobody was listening.
Martin: Okay, good.
Were there any shows outside of “Only Murders” you were happy to see get a nomination today?
Martin: Truth is, I haven’t seen all the nominations. I watch “Barry.” And I’m happy for that.
Short: “Ted Lasso” is fantastic. I watched “Hacks.” “Dopesick.”
Martin: Oh yes, “Dopesick” was fantastic. It’s almost impossible to stay up with all the shows, you’d just be watching television all day. Which is exactly what I do.
Do you guys have any non-“Only Murders” projects lined up people can expect?
Martin: I have a book coming out in November with Harry Bliss, the cartoonist. We did a book last year called “A Wealth of Pigeons.” It was a cartoon book, but this book is called “Number One Is Walking.” And it’s a cartoon memoir of my career in the movies.
Short: And I will be doing two episodes — and this part is a tremendous stretch for me so that’s why I’m glad I’ll be back — of “Schmigadoon,” playing a leprechaun.
Martin: Oh my god. And are you in character right now? Because it seems like you are. -
Hannah Waddingham
Supporting Actress, Comedy (“Ted Lasso”)
How are you feeling today?
I am literally smiling so hard I feel like my face is gonna split open.
Last year, a lot of your fellow cast members got recognized. How does it feel to share that moment together and keep dominating in this way?
We’re all a bit shocked. On our Whatsapp group it’s all just blanket shock and lots of teary emojis. And for our newest nominees, oh, my god, do they deserve it? I mean, these people that have been added to our shocked gaggle, they all deserve it in so many different ways and are the most delicious, kind, inclusive personalities to have around the set. So for them to have all been nominated, absolutely thrills me to my core.
Were there any nominees outside of “Ted Lasso” you were excited to see get a nod?
My category alone, the women in this category, I am a massive fan girl. Me and Hannah Einbinder have stayed in touch the year, commenting on each other’s things, saying hi, on a very basic level. I mean Alex Borstein, my girl Juno Temple, Sarah Niles, the mighty Kate McKinnon, the women of “Abbott Elementary.” Damn right, everyone should be in this category. I want to try and get us all together so we can have a bit of a squeeze and go this category rocks, man.
Two iconic Hannahs in that category.
The loveliest girl. She and I completely had a meeting of minds and just dig each other very much.
You’re currently filming Season 3 of “Ted Lasso.” It was written as the last season. Do you know if it actually will be and how has that felt for you?
Seemingly so. I asked Mr. Bossman Sudekis himself and he was like “Yeah, I think so. For now.” It is how he envisaged it. And as much as we are all desperately sad about that, you have to respect the creator of the show that has said “No, it has a beginning, a middle and an end.” And we all have to just be grateful for the ride because I know none of us will ever forget it. If more comes from it, then I’m in. But if it doesn’t, then it will be a magical four or five years of my life.
This fall, you’re going to be in a very anticipated movie, “Hocus Pocus 2.” Can you tell me a little bit about your character, how she relates to the Sanderson sisters?
All I will say is blink once, you’ll miss me. I mean, I was desperate to be there. When they offered the part to me I was just like “Yep, I don’t care what I’m doing in it, I’m in.” And then when I realized what I would be playing, I was just a bit overwhelmed that it came my way. It’s an iconic little cameo in the making, because of what she brings to the film. And now I’m gonna shut up.
Do you have any other projects in the pipeline that you’re filming or have coming out?
I’ve got a lot of cheeky irons in the fire? None of which I can talk about which is very boring. I know. But they are the kinds of things that I never dreamt would come my way, and in the way that they are coming my way. And I have this show absolutely to thank for it but it has aired my wares. To have this in my late 40s is something I never expected to come along. And I’m just immensely grateful because the things coming up are really exciting.

Toheeb Jimoh
Supporting Actor (“Ted Lasso”)
Hi, where are you today?
I’ve stepped out of the house and my battery’s on 5%. And I don’t have an iPhone, which is weird because I’m on an Apple TV show. So I’m on FaceTime, using my friend’s phone.
Amazing. Well congrats on your nomination, which was a bit of a surprise today. How are you feeling?
It’s crazy. I’m kind of all over the place. I don’t really know how to feel. I spent the first 30 minutes after I found out just screaming to people on the phone. And now I’m kinda leveling out so I think I’m at a place where I can play cool, a little bit more.
How does it feel to be recognized along with your cast, which got a lot of recognition this year?
It feels great. Our show, we’ve been really lucky with awards in general so, it’s really particularly cool to get an individual nomination. Sam’s journey in the show and like my journey as an actor outside of the show kind of parallel each other. In the second season he’s starting to find himself and he’s becoming his own man. And in a weird way, I feel like I’m having the same experience with myself in my career. So this is just kind of the icing on the cake with that, I’m starting to branch out and stand on my own two feet a bit.
You’re currently in production on Season 3, which was written as the last. Does it look like it will be?
I don’t know, if I’m being completely honest. This season kind of feels like a closing, regardless of whether it’s the final season of “Ted Lasso.” It definitely will be the end to chapter one, if anything. I think everybody on set, we’re not really sure if this was the last time we’ll get to do this, the last time we got to put on these jerseys and play these characters and be with each other. So I think we’re all just trying to appreciate it for what we have. So there’s an added emphasis on cherishing the moment that we have.
What can fans sort of expect from Sam’s journey in Season 3?
I think we’re getting to the final end of Sam’s progression. In the third season, I think we’re gonna start to see the rewards of all Ted’s teachings, and I think we’re gonna see him fully flourish as a businessman, as a football player, as a sports person and just as an individual. We’ll get to see a bit more of his relationship with his family, his dad’s been a massive influence on him, and so I think we’ll get to see a bit more of his relationship with his father.
Are there any shows that you’re a fan of that you were happy to see get nominated?
“Succession” is a big one. “Euphoria” is great. Those are the main two that jumped out at me. “Succession” got 25 nominations, right?
Yep.
I mean, they beat us by five, but I’m still happy for them.
Outside of “Ted Lasso,” what are you working on right now? What projects do you have cooking?
The next place I guess people will see me is on the Amazon show that I’m doing called “The Power,” it’s a sci fi thriller. It will be out sometime next year for Amazon. And I’m super excited about that project.

Kaitlyn Dever
Supporting Actress, Limited Series (“Dopesick”)
Congrats on your nomination, how are you feeling this morning?
I am so excited. I am just beaming this morning. I’m so proud of the entire cast and Danny Strong and everybody. I mean 14 nominations is just insane. It’s insane. And I’m just so grateful.
Like you said, “Dopesick” got a lot of love this morning. What does it feel like to be sharing this moment with the cast?
It feels incredible. I’m so proud of Danny Strong. He put so much dedication and hard work into making this show the best it could possibly be. And this show has completely changed my life in so many ways. This experience was so empowering and I can’t even begin to explain to you how grateful I am to be nominated alongside Michael [Keaton] and Peter [Sarsgaard].
Outside of “Dopesick,” were there any shows you were happy to see get nominated?
I love “The Great.” I love “Under the Banner of Heaven.” I was so happy to see them get nominated.
You’re in “Ticket to Paradise,” a movie coming out late this fall with Julia Roberts and George Clooney. What was it like for you working with two legends?
They are full-on legends. They are everything you would hope they would be and more. It was a once in a lifetime experience getting to work with them and to be around their banter. They’re best buds, you know; they love to joke around and have fun. So that’s really what the shoot was; it was just a bunch of fun and getting to watch that was insane. Every day I was like, “What is my life now?” They’re really just the best.
Are you working on anything else right now? What other projects do you have cooking that fans can expect?
I just finished a shoot for a film I did called “No One Will Save You” for Hulu. That was a lot of fun. And as of right now, I’m just looking forward to celebrating with my “Dopesick” family at the Emmys. I’m just really thinking of that right now.
-
Himesh Patel
Lead Actor, Limited Series (“Station Eleven”)
How are you celebrating your nomination?
I’m with my family. I was on the train to go and see my parents when I got the call about the fact that it had happened. I had no idea the nominations were coming out today. So it all kind of came in as a bit of a surprise. I’m just spending a bit of time with my family, which is a nice place to be.
How does it feel to be nominated for “Station Eleven,” which got a decent amount of Emmys love today?
Yeah, I had a look at the list and obviously it’s a shame we didn’t make the limited series but I’m really glad for so many of the brilliant creatives behind the show who got their nominations. To be alongside them and celebrating our show, which has been years in the making and a labor of love in so many ways. It’s a real honor.
Patrick Somerville, the showrunner of “Station Eleven,” is working with Emily St. John Mandel to adapt her other books, “The Glass Hotel” and “Sea of Tranquility.” Is it possible you’ll join those projects? Have you heard anything about them?
I haven’t. I speak to Patrick regularly, because he’s become a friend. So I’m very excited to see what they cook up because it’ll be very special, I’m sure. And if they asked me to be a part of it, I’m sure I wouldn’t say no, because you know, today’s proof that our endeavors with “Station Eleven” have been very fruitful. So, if Patrick opens the door, I’m happy to walk through it.
Were there any other shows that got nominated today you were excited to see get recognized?
I just finished watching “Severance” the other day, and I was blown away by it. I was so glad it got nominated, because it’s one of the most original TV shows I’ve seen in a very long time. So yeah, that’s been on my mind lately.
What else do you have cooking? Are there any projects you can tell me about?
I just recently wrapped on a movie called “Providence,” which is myself and Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Lily James, who I was really happy to see her get nominated today as well. And a bunch of other great actors like Uzo Aduba, Tim Blake Nelson. So that’ll be coming down the line at some point, and it’s a really great project, so hoping people get to see it soon.
-
Colman Domingo
Guest Actor in a Drama Series (“Euphoria”)
Where were you when the nominations were announced?
I was in my room at the Hotel Claremont in Atlanta [where he’s shooting “The Color Purple” musical movie]. I decided to watch because sometimes I do and sometimes I don’t, but I know there have been so many well wishers and people really wanting this for me, I said, let me watch. My manager called me after like four categories and says, “Congratulations, Emmy-nominee.” I was like, “Wait, what are you talking about?” I didn’t see anything. I actually didn’t believe it and he was like, “Yours is online.” … And then I did something that shocked me—I actually started crying. I’m not really emotional about things like this.
So why did you cry this time around?
This felt different because I know what the character represents to many people. It sounds strange, but I wanted it for all that he represents and the language that Sam [Levinson] gives me and what he’s doing in the television space, which I think it’s a breakthrough. And this character, this Black guy who’s an addict and he’s trying to do some good in the world. I want that to be amplified….But there’s also something deep down inside that I want it. I have an ego like everybody else. [Laughs].
Listen, everyone knows it’s an honor to be nominated, but it’s pretty amazing when you win, too.
It is. It’s nice to be at the table, man. I’ve been working for 32 years and I feel like I’m now starting to get things that a lot of my colleagues have.
What can you tell me about the next season of “Euphoria,” what has Sam told you?
He’s told me a little bit. He’s told me some ideas. But the thing about Sam, which is kind of cool, he can tell you some ideas that he got going on in his head. but it’s not real until it goes on paper. But even if it goes on paper, he may change the whole season. He’s done that. I think he really works moment to moment.
What’s the last TV you binged?
“Julia.” I had COVID. I was just lying there and I wanted something that made me feel good. It made me want to eat although I was not hungry when I COVID. And I thought I want to go to France again. It was just so indulgent.
What’s the one TV death you’ve never been able to get over?
I don’t know if I’m over Big’s death from [“And Just Like That”]. But also, Dan’s death on “Roseanne” really rocked me. When you realize that last season of “Roseanne” that Dan was dead and she was depressed the whole season because that whole season was bonkers. You were like what is happening? Are they smoking something, but it was because Dan died.
What’s your favorite way to watch TV?
In my trailer, on my couch. I will set myself up and bring the lights down and watch TV. It’s the best.

Danny Strong
Limited Series, Writing and Directing (“Dopesick”)
So what was your reaction when you heard about all the nominations that “Dopesick” got?
I was just thrilled. Very, very excited and I was so happy to see so many of my actors get nominated. It was a huge portion of my cast.
What does it mean to you to see “Dopesick” recognized this year and everything that the show covers being brought out into the spotlight?
Well, it’s really hard to get a project like this made. We were passed on all over town and when there’s subject matter like this that is potentially dark or has a tragic element to it, most buyers and studios and networks, they’re not overly interested in telling this type of story and so it’s great to see Hulu get so rewarded for taking the risk of telling a story like this story that needs to be told about a dark chapter in American history.
What was the biggest hurdle in getting this show made?
We shot it during the pandemic, pre-vaccine most of it, so that was really intense and really challenging. And this was not a bubble production. It was the opposite of a bubble. We had hundreds of cast members and thousands of extras and everyone flying in and out and it was it was just extremely complicated. It was also just a complicated story to construct all these characters and storylines and different timelines and I think putting the scripts together was particularly challenging.
For you specifically being nominated in three separate areas, what does that feel like?
Awesome. So exciting. I mean, to get three nominations and to get the directing nom in particular was just quite thrilling for me.
And what are you obsessed with on this current season of television other than your own show that either was or wasn’t nominated? Why?
Yeah, my favorite show I don’t think that any nominations and I’m very disappointed. “Winning Time.” The Lakers show. That show is frickin’ incredible. And I have no idea why it didn’t get nominated for everything but maybe their Season 2 will, it just needs a little momentum.
-
Lily James
Lead Actress, Limited Series (“Pam & Tommy”)
What was your reaction to seeing who you had been nominated alongside?
The initial thing was Sebastian and the fact that we both got a nomination just makes the whole thing feel incredibly special. We worked so hard together and really supported each other through this and felt very bonded in the process and what we were trying to achieve.
You were saying it was hard for you to hear that Pamela Anderson herself wasn’t going to be involved. How do you feel about that now, seeing the attention the show has received?
All I cared about was doing her justice and pouring myself into the story as a woman and as how I would feel under that circumstance. I would hope that we’ve done that justice, but it was always hard for me that Pamela wasn’t involved, but I have to respect those boundaries and I trust in the intention within the show and every other creative involved. It felt deeply personal. Every single part of this was born out of a lot of rage. I’m so excited to hear that she’s doing a documentary and and whilst I’m sure I may never know exactly how she felt about the show, I do believe in what we wanted to achieve and perhaps have at least reached some people.
You had a huge transformation into this role. Do you see yourself doing a transformation like that ever again, and if so, who would you want to transform into next?
Oh, my God. I would love to play Janis Joplin in something. I’d love to play a musician. I loved having so much to draw on and so much to aim for. Sometimes you feel like the shooting in the dark in your imagination is just like floating around, but you’re creating something from scratch. And with this, that was such a guiding light. Playing Pamela was so inspiring. I feel so lucky to have had the opportunity.
-
Connie Britton
Supporting Actress, Limited Series (“The White Lotus”)
What was your reaction seeing how many of your fellow castmates got nominations?
I was so happy. You know, this to me feels like a special one because the creation of this show was such a collaboration and particularly a collaboration at the height of COVID. At a time when we hadn’t been around people, and then we all got nominated together and that includes our crew, our incredible department heads who were also nominated. We all got together in this harrowing time in this beautiful place, and got to really rally around this wonderful script and this wonderful opportunity to tell a really smart, funny and culturally relevant satirical story.
The second season is going to be in Italy, but if there’s a third season, do you have an idea of where you think it could or should be set?
I do, but I’ll never share it. I’ll never tell.
Is it something you would want to return to, if they ever offered in the future?
Oh, of course. We’ve actually talked about it. I will always do anything with Mike White, which is how I got into this in the first place. I just value him so much, and I think he’s doing something that not very many people are able to do.
What are you working on right now?
Well, right now I’m doing a show with Jason Katims called “Dear Edward” for Apple. I’m reunited with him, which is lovely.
I look forward to hearing where the third season of “White Lotus” will be set because I feel like you seem to know where it’s gonna be.
I know, I’m sorry I can’t divulge! And by the way, I don’t even think Mike knows where it’s gonna be. But I’ve been privy to some conversations, but I could never say for sure because I don’t think he knows for sure.
-
Anthony Carrigan
Supporting Actor, Comedy (“Barry”)
First off, congrats on your nomination. How are you feeling today?
Thank you so much. I’m over the moon. I’m so happy, it’s a great … what is it, Wednesday?
Tuesday. It’s a Tuesday.
It’s kind of the best possible Tuesday I could have.
I know that Season 4 of the show starts filming soon, in about three weeks. Have you read any of the scripts for it?
I’ve read a few of them so far, and they’re incredible. I mean, granted, they’re probably going to change significantly. So no, I have not started memorizing my lines. But it’s exciting to know just some of the direction that they take. This upcoming season is going to be wild.
What are you excited for NoHo to get into? I’m sure you can’t tell me anything concrete, but what are you excited to dive into as an actor?
Season 3 was so wonderful, and they kind of fleshed out these other dimensions of Hank. And I think what’s gonna be great about the next season is it’s kind of a continuation of that. There’ll be even more for me to play with and stretch myself out with as an actor. So you couldn’t ask for more.
Do you have any projects outside of “Barry” you’re working on or that are coming out soon?
I do have something coming out, an animated series, but I don’t know if I’m allowed to talk about it yet, which is very frustrating. But I’m not sure yet when that will come out. For the most part, I’m just excited to hop back into Season 4.
What was it like voice acting? Do you have much experience with it?
It was kind of my first foray into it. I loved it. I had so much fun, and they let me play around a lot and do a lot of improv. So I was in my element of just completely goofing around, which was very nice.
Do you have any shows you were excited to see get nominations this year? Anyone you were disappointed to see snubbed?
I’m excited for “Succession,” for sure. I think it was just a powerhouse this season. And I hope it just sweeps all of the awards. And as far as snubs go, I would have loved to see Sadie Sink be nominated because I thought she was just phenomenal in “Stranger Things.” But she’s got a long career ahead of her. And I’m sure she’s gonna do damage in the future.
-
Adam Scott
Lead Actor, Drama (“Severance”)
Was there anyone that you were really happy to see recognized from “Severance”?
Yeah, I mean, the show being nominated. And Ben and Dan and Patricia and Chris and John. The whole ensemble deserves it. And I certainly see all of us getting nominated as you know and share it with the entire ensemble because they’re just all so incredible.
You had a great conversation with Quinta about “Abbott Elementary.” Were there any other projects that you were especially happy to see get some recognition this year?
Yeah, I mean, I’m so happy for Quinta, she deserves it. Many times over. I’m so excited for her, but I honestly haven’t even really looked at it at a full list yet.
Where are you at on Season 2, what’s going on with that?
We’re gonna start shooting pretty soon, and it’s exciting, because it’s already been like a year and change since we finished filming, so I’m anxious to get back and I think everybody is. Getting back to those white hallways, you know, I can’t get enough.
My question for you was can they ever go back into that office? Now?
That’s a really good question. That’s a really, really good question.
Do you have an answer?
I do not have an answer. But that’s an excellent question.
Do you know if we can expect to pick right back up with your face at the beginning of the next season?
I don’t know. I don’t know if I can answer that. I’m so sorry.
This show obviously had everyone on the edge of their seats. Was there anything else on TV this year with big twists that you appreciated?
“Stranger Things” has been great. My daughter and I watch that together. “Squid Game” was unbelievable. I could not pull my hands down over my face, but I had to watch it through my fingers. “Yellowjackets” is great. Rhea Seehorn is great. I’m so excited that she got nominated. There were a lot of really fun suspenseful shows and the fact that we’re sort of in the among them is really an honor, and really flattering.
Who would you say is your favorite villain on television?
You know, I really love Tony Dalton from “Better Call Saul.” And I love Tramell Tillman on our show. He is just outstanding. Jon Bernthal on “We Own This City” was a performance that I’ll be going back to over and over again. I love watching that guy. And that performance was unbelievable.
