The Greenbelt's varied landscape of 2,800 acres includes mature forests, wetlands, meadows, wildlife and over 35-miles of marked hiking trails. This position will report to the Greenbelt Director of Education and Greenbelt Park Administrator to oversee the Greenbelt Conservation Corps. The Greenbelt Conservation Corps (GCC) is a stewardship focused program that is dedicated to conserve and restore the natural areas of the Staten Island Greenbelt. GCC leaders work with a coalition of NYC Parks and Natural Areas Conservation staff, community members and high school students to provide experiential work and place-based learning with the goal of fostering diverse community engagement through teamwork and individualized learning. The mission of the GCC is to inspire people to make positive impacts through meaningful land stewardship projects resulting in personal growth and environmental sustainability.

Major Responsibilities
- Under general supervision, with latitude for independent initiative and judgment, lead the GCC program where participants will engage in forest restoration projects and trail work.
- Collaborate with environmental groups, other NYC Parks divisions and community groups to scope and develop training workshops.
- Outreach to expand workforce development program with local high schools and lead students in restoration projects and the possibilities of a green workforce.
- Facilitate, organize and lead community stewardship projects and public engagement events.
- Collect data, create reports, and manage project budgets and expenditures.
- Design and implement curriculum for high school CTE students.
- Lead in recruiting, training, and scheduling forestry volunteers and interns; Create volunteer appreciation events.
- Assist in facility operations for the education department and interact with visitors.

Minimum Qualifications

Qualification Requirements
1. High school graduation or equivalent and three years of experience in community work or community centered activities in an area related to duties described above; or
2. Education and/or experience which is equivalent to "1" above.


Preferred Skills

1. A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university, with a specialization in forestry or a related subject, such as trail and forest restoration and one year of full time professional experience in forestry or environmental education. 2. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills. 3. Experience working with the public and school age students. 4. Ability to work independently. 5. Ability to work outdoors in a natural setting in all conditions. 6. Experience in project management or community outreach. 7. Familiarity with forest ecology, site analysis, trail restoration, curriculum development. 8. Skills or experience in building or restoring trails and forest landscapes mitigating erosion control measures.

Residency Requirement

Residency in New York City, Nassau, Orange, Rockland, Suffolk, Putnam or Westchester counties required for employees with over two years of city service. New York City residency required within 90 days of hire for all other candidates.
