Volunteer with Rainier Athletes

How It WOrks

Volunteer mentors meet with their mentee once a week at the mentee’s school. A typical mentor/mentee check-in includes conversation about school, family, extracurriculars, friends, and whatever else is happening in your mentee’s life. After check-ins, mentors submit a report that shares updates and identifies any areas needing support with their mentee’s family, teachers, and coaches. You will be the connector that brings together a community of support.

Do I have to be a sports fan?

Rainier Athletes are also artists and engineers - their passions are a way that we engage in a deeper conversation with them and their Core Community. So no, you don’t have to love sports! Rainier Athletes volunteers are ages 16+ with diverse backgrounds, skill sets, and interests.

Elementary & Middle School Mentoring

Mentors typically spend 1-2 hours a week volunteering between check-ins, reports, and invitations to cheer at their mentee’s games/activities or celebrate milestones like quinceañeras or graduation.

We ask mentors to commit to at least one full school year. This helps to create consistency and stability in the student’s life, something the student may have lacked prior to joining Rainier Athletes.

Trainings are held throughout the year and mentors are asked to participate in at least one all-mentor training (4 hours). You’ll also have support from our dedicated team whenever you need it.

High School Mentoring

Squad Leaders are responsible for leading a Rainier Athletes High School Squad - a small group of 5-6 students ranging from 9th-12th grade. Responsibilities include coordinating logistics, prepping for, and ultimately leading weekly 1-2 hour long Squad Meet-Ups. These Squad Meet-Ups may include topical discussions, study sessions, and other activities to strengthen authentic relationships, engage community, or build towards each student’s next step plan after high school.
