Dear Parents/Guardians,

After a successful Lunar New Year celebration we are looking forward all the events that we will be planning for the end of the school year. Please review our weekly messages in the teacher newsletters as we will be adding information about future events soon.  One important event below is the Lunar New Year Volunteer Appreciation Breakfast.  There is an RSVP link: LNY Volunteer Appreciation Breakfast.

Spring is in the air and that means we’re gearing up for an uptick in behaviors. Traditionally we see students start to pick up the extra energy from the sun and heat and that energy often transfers to questionable behaviors. Also, please remind your students to avoid using smartphone or smart watches during school hours to avoid distraction. This is especially true for 5th graders who are antsy and ready to leave the elementary world to middle school.  Let’s work together to help the students make good choices in the rest of the year. We appreciate any and all support at home!

Only a few days till Spring Break! We hope you can have a restful week!

Sincerely,

Ms. Tan and Mr. Shelton

谭校长 and Mr. Shelton

(School communication to current Kindergarten to 4th Gr.)

The time has come for us to begin thinking about preparing for classroom placements for the next school year. Our goal during this time is to spend the spring focused on creating drafts of balanced classrooms that will meet the needs of all children. We will spend a great deal of time as a staff and in grade level teams developing anticipated class groupings. We take into consideration Mandarin proficiency level, male to female ratio, academic performance, social skills, learning styles, and special needs. We also value parent input. Creating balanced classrooms where children will be successful is a complex process, and we need your cooperation to make it work. We appreciate the opportunity to work together with you to create well-balanced classrooms.  Please fill this out by 5/1. Thank you.

Summer School Update:

We will have a Chinese Literacy Summer School class this year again. The Elementary School Summer School program is designed to support incoming 2nd, 3rd, 4th grade students who are in need for Chinese language support.  The program will focus on Chinese literacy, especially speaking and reading. Teacher are preparing their recommendations now and we will reach out to you soon with an invitation if you child has been recommended for Summer School. The program runs from July 9-July 31.  The final decision on which elementary school will be used has not been decided yet. For English/Math Summer school which is for incoming 2nd, 3rd, and 4th grade, the district is reviewing our students’ data and will send invitations soon as well. (After reviewing the data, Jing Mei only has two students that qualify for the English/Math summer class.) For our current 5th graders, we are also sending recommendations based on our middle of the year assessment data.

Drills in March and April (School communication to Prek to 5th Gr.)

In March we conducted an earthquake drill and practiced what we would do if we were at school in the event of an earthquake. Students learned about Drop, Cover, and Hold On and then we practiced.

Please talk to your child about our drill today. An important next step might be planning a drill in your own home and checking to make sure you are prepared in the event of an earthquake or other natural disaster.

For more information on earthquakes and general preparedness, you might want to visit the Washington Emergency Management Division (https://mil.wa.gov/personal) or Great Washington ShakeOut (https://www.shakeout.org/washington/index.html) websites.

In April, we will be conducting a fire drill and practicing evacuating the building and accounting for everyone.

During a fire evacuation, students are taught to quickly and quietly exit the building. They meet on the field at an assigned location and stay silent while attendance is taken to ensure all people have safely evacuated.

Please talk with your student about preparing for emergencies and disasters such as fires. Encourage them to talk about their concerns and express their feelings. Emphasize that even though sometimes things happen that we may not expect, there are lots of things we can do to help us stay safe.

For more information on fire safety, you might want to visit the National Fire Protection Association “Kids” page at http://www.sparky.org/ or their parent resource page at http://www.sparky.org/parents.

New Website Project Update: Content and Webpage Optimization, Staff Training  (District communication to Prek to 5th Gr.)

Work on the new BSD websites has been ongoing for almost one year, with the Listen and Learn project phase beginning in March 2023. Today, the project continues in the development portion of the Design and Development phase.

As noted in the project update in December, the project team has been focused on the website audit, content migration and training in the new platform. To allow more time to complete this part of the work, the Design and Development project phase will continue through summer 2024, with the new websites launching at that time. Several other aspects of the project will also take place during this time, specifically content and webpage optimization and broad staff training.

Coming soon will be the Launch and Promotion phase, in which the BSD community will learn:

      • How BSD’s websites have changed
      • Where to find important information on the new websites
      • How to use the new and innovative features across websites
        • E.g., navigation menus, site search, and language and accessibility tools
      • Where to share feedback and submit website enhancement requests
      • And more!
