Draymond Green is a polarizing force on the hardcourt. Let's not forget, he began last season by punching then-teammate Jordan Poole into the San Francisco Bay.

That incident was the latest chapter in a long list of issues Green has created. While he's worked hard to brand himself as an on-court villain, he's one that has been a key part of four NBA championships with the Golden State Warriors. 

Green may be disliked by many fans outside of the Bay Area, but many of those same fans would love to have him on their own team. That could be a reality as Green has, as expected, declined a $27.6 million player option and is now an unrestricted free agent. 

Poole is now in Washington, though it's still unclear what effect that will have on Green's future.

Will Draymond Green Really Leave The Warriors?

At age 32, teams may be wary that Green is beginning to slow down. His 8.5 points per game was the highest since 2017-18, but his assists and steals numbers noticeably drooped. 

That said, the hard-nosed, defense-first Green also played in 73 games, the most since 2016-17, and the most minutes per game since 17-18. 

Green opted out of the big deal so he can get one, final, longer deal. He can offer a dynamic that many teams may be lacking.

But it starts with the team that drafted him in the second round of the 2012 NBA Draft. The Warriors reportedly are interested in keeping Green, even on a longer deal, and he was talking as though he plans on staying after the Warriors were eliminated by the Lakers in Game 6 of the semis. "We're not done yet; we'll be back next year," said Green after averaging 12.3 points, 9.6 rebounds and 4.6 assists in the final three games against the Lakers.

Golden State made one massive offseason move that may appeal to Draymond, acquiring All-Star point guard Chris Paul and trading away Poole, who Green simply tolerated.

Poole's massive salary is now out of the way, but that doesn't mean Green is guaranteed to return to the Bay. Teams in need of toughness or veteran tenacity will come calling and Green answer.

Potential Landing Spots For Draymond Green

To nobody's surprise, the Los Angeles Lakers are next on the list. When Green made the announcement he was declining the player option to become a free agent, he was hobnobbing in Europe with LeBron James. The two have been close, and James could use an added level of toughness to the roster. 

L.A. is always in win-now mode, especially with LeBron James and Anthony Davis each one year away from their own player options. If Golden State balks, L.A. could come calling, though it’s no better when it comes to finances. 

“In the case of the Lakers, they would have to pretty much dump all of the players they got over the last year to open up that space,” ESPN's Brian Windhorst said on the show Get Up. “That is not something Rob Pelinka, the general manager, had indicated he wants to do.”

The Detroit Pistons aren’t a contender, but it is home for the Saginaw native who played at Michigan State. Defense and toughness was a notable issue for the young Pistons, who have the capital to make a legitimate offer to bring Green home. 

The Pistons have wanted Green since Draft Day (he wasn’t available when they were selecting) and Green has reportedly had a fondness of playing for Detroit. This will be the first opportunity it could materialize. Detroit is one of six teams that could add Draymond without worry of salary cap space. None of them, however, are contenders, and that might be a tough pill to swallow for someone who's been playing for titles for most of his career. 

The Milwaukee Bucks ranked No. 4 in defense rating all season, then dead-last in the playoffs when it counted most. Milwaukee is at a crossroads with Brook Lopez a free agent and Khris Middleton declining his player option to become a free agent. Green may embrace joining an Eastern Conference contender. 

No team can afford to break the bank this offseason more than the Houston Rockets, who are being linked to just about every higher-priced free agent out there. Houston could go from worst to contender in short order, and Green could be a big part of toughening up a young, promising team. 

The Field has a slew of teams that will likely kick the tires but may find it financially challenging. That includes the Miami Heat, Dallas Mavericks, Philadelphia 76ers and Denver Nuggets.
