Bright Futures - Building Positive Parenting Skills Across Ages

Description

The main goals of this course are to provide pediatric health care professionals* the knowledge and skills to provide parental support and advice. Pediatric health care professionals can play a vital role in reinforcing parenting skills by providing developmentally appropriate parenting advice and support as well as modeling parenting skills during the health supervision visit. Teaching and reinforcing parenting skills in the course of a health supervision visit can be useful to address common behavioral concerns and ameliorate parental stress.

NOTE: For this content, the term pediatric health care professional encompasses pediatricians (pediatrician, pediatric medical subspecialist, and pediatric surgical specialist), nurse practitioners, and family medicine physicians.

Learning Objectives

This course is organized into 3 units. Upon completion of this course, you will be able to:

Unit 1: Bright Futures Framework and Core Principles

• Identify the framework and core principles for Bright Futures health supervision visits
• Utilize the Bright Futures Tool and Resource Kit, 2nd Edition (Toolkit) to provide guidance to parents during health supervision visits
• Understand the potential impacts of social determinants of health and parental adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) on parenting skills

Unit 2: Foundational Parenting Principles and Core competencies

• Identify the foundational information to improve the understanding of key parenting principles and core competencies 

Unit 3: Parenting & Patient Anticipatory Guidance During Health Supervision Visits

• Recognize target areas of concerns related to childhood developmental stages
• Apply key concepts to various health supervision visit case scenarios
