Kutztown women's basketball headed back to the NCAA Tournament for first time since 1996

INDIANAPOLIS -- Kutztown University heard its name called as part of the 64-team 2022 NCAA Division II Women's Basketball Championship field for just the second time in program history, Sunday night.

The Golden Bears earned an at-large berth and the No. 3 seed in the Atlantic Region bracket thanks to a school-record 26 wins (26-6 overall record) and strong 24-3 in-region record. They'll face No. 6 seed Charleston (W.Va.) in a first round game Friday, March 11, at Glenville State, which captured the tournament's top overall seed.

Rylee Derr (Lititz, Pa./Warwick), the program's all-time leader in scoring (1,806 points) and 3-point field goals (332), is averaging a team-best 13.3 points per game and 6.6 rebounds per game this season. She recently received All-PSAC East First Team honors for the third time in her career and her fourth all-conference nod overall.

Junior forward Casey Remolde (Philadelphia, Pa./Saint Basil Academy), a defensive stalwart, was an All-PSAC East Second Team pick and is putting up 11.4 points per contest to go along with team-highs of 7.8 rebounds and 2.5 blocks per game. PSAC East Rookie of the Year Abbey Hearn (Lewes, Del./Cape Henlopen) averages 9.8 points and 4.7 boards, while the Maroon and Gold have also gotten valuable contributions up and down their roster from veterans and underclassmen alike.

Janet Malouf, the 2022 PSAC East Coach of the Year, has Kutztown back in the "Big Dance" for the first time since 1996. Malouf won her 400th career game earlier this season and will look to deliver the program its first NCAA Tournament victory. The Golden Bears fell to Pitt-Johnstown, 63-52, in the first round of their only other appearance, which came in only Malouf's second season.

Eight eight-team regionals will be played at on-campus sites March 11, 12 and 14. The eight regional champions advance to the Women's Elite Eight and will be seeded by the Women's Basketball Committee after completion of the regionals. The 2022 NCAA Division II Women's Elite Eight will be held at the Birmingham CrossPlex in Birmingham, Ala., March 21, 23 and 25. Miles College and the City of Birmingham will serve as hosts.
