Undocumented Students - Digital Display

A guide sharing published experiences of undocumented students in higher education and links to resources for BC students.

Introduction

According to an April 2020 report from the immigration research organization New American Economy, an estimated 3% of college students, approximately 14,000 people, in the state of Washington are undocumented immigrants. About half of these students, approximately 7,000 people, are DACA-eligible (p. 3).

This guide provides links to stories from the lives of undocumented students in higher education, showing the unique challenges encountered by undocumented students and their resourcefulness in accomplishing their educational goals. The "Resources for Students" tab directs students to resources gathered by Multicultural Services.

Each resource on this guide contains information about whether it is available online or in print, and whether it is available from Bellevue College or KCLS. To access Bellevue College resources, use your BC credentials. For more information about accessing the KCLS books included on this guide, visit the KCLS Student Access guide.

Sharing the Stories

These books and one documentary share the stories of undocumented students. Some of these books are written by undocumented immigrants about their own lives, while others collect and highlight multiple stories.

Academic studies

These books discuss the lives of undocumented students in a larger social context. They may include some personal stories, but they use these to learn what factors affect the lives of these students and do not center student stories to the extent of the books above.
