There’s incredible economic potential in Newark, but its residents don’t yet fully access it. Lucrative work in the city too often goes to individuals who commute to it; a 2017 report found that Newark residents hold less than 20% of the city’s jobs, and the roles they have are more likely to be low-paid. The unemployment rate for Black Newark residents is double that of white residents, and around a third of the city lives under the poverty line.
We must help ensure Newark’s young people have access to a more prosperous, equitable future. The city’s educators are working hard to prepare young people for academic success and opportunity. Local government and many businesses, nonprofits, and universities are collaborating to expand access to strong jobs and economic mobility, too. Braven is grateful for the chance to work alongside them through our partnership with Rutgers University-Newark.

Launched in 2015, Rutgers University-Newark (RU-N) was Braven’s second national college partnership, and its first on the East Coast of the United States. Braven and RU-N share a deep commitment to diversity, opportunity, and expanding access. RU-N is one of the most diverse schools in the country, and ranks highly for social mobility and “return on investment” for students from low-income backgrounds.
