PLE Principals Update
March 29, 2021
Dear PHamily,
Last week we welcomed many of our third graders back to the building! Special gratitude to all the PLE staff members involved in making this transition smooth. Our amazing Specialists, Front Office Staff, Nurse, Custodians, Classified and Classroom Teachers have done a lot of planning and coordination to welcome students back. As we continue to bring students back into the building, it was so powerful to hear our students' feelings and emotions about their return. It has been a year since we saw them in person, so emotions can run very high from all different levels. We have been through a lot together, ups and downs, and we continue to stay together regardless of the challenges and successes we have faced.
Warmly,
Melisa Macias, PLE Principal
Virtual Week after Spring Break
The Week of April 19 to April 23 will remain virtual as we did previously for the mid-winter break.
Are students and staff expected to quarantine after traveling?
Yes. Travel increases your chance of spreading and getting COVID-19. The CDC recommends you delay travel and stay home to protect yourself and others from COVID-19, even if you are vaccinated or have previously had COVID-19.
According to the CDC, if you must travel, take steps to protect yourself and others:
- If you are eligible, get fully vaccinated for COVID-19.
- Before you travel, get tested with a viral test 1-3 days before your trip.
- Wear a mask over your nose and mouth when in public.
- Avoid crowds and stay at least 6 feet/2 meters (about 2 arm lengths) from anyone who did not travel with you.
- Get tested 3-5 days after your trip and stay home and self-quarantine for a full 7 days after travel, even if your test is negative. If you don’t get tested, stay home and self-quarantine for 10 days after travel.
- Follow all state and local recommendations or requirements after travel.
Please contact your child's teacher if your student is planning to quarantine, so we can plan accordingly.

Welcoming Rosa Alvarez-Luna to the Phamily: General School Assistance
Please join me in welcoming Rosa Alvarez-Luna to the PLE community as our newest GSA. Below is a quick introduction from Rosa herself:
My name is Rosa, I am currently transferring to UW Bothell to finish my undergraduate studies! I am 20 years old with a little 10 month baby boy! I was in the BSD all my years from kindergarten to 9th grade. Where I got offered a scholarship at a private school. I love working with kids just before the pandemic hit I was working at a daycare with infants. My aspirations is to want to be a safe ground for many children and love seeing how much they learn and grow. I’m so excited to start to learn from and help these students flourish throughout the year given the circumstances! 😊
Regards,
Rosa.

Family Satisfaction Survey
February 23 to March 30, 2021
The Bellevue School District is conducting a survey to understand whether families across the district feel Informed, Supported and Empowered to contribute to their student’s success. It is a district priority to create long-lasting partnerships between families and schools for better student outcomes.
Families received an email and a unique survey link for each school where you have a student enrolled, which means you may receive multiple surveys. You will be asked to answer the survey based on the experience of your oldest child in the school. The survey is available in multiple languages including English, Spanish, Vietnamese, Russian, Korean, Arabic, Amharic, Japanese and simplified Chinese. For more information, please visit our frequently asked questions page.
Nurse Corner
It is allergy season and along with that comes runny noses, cough, and sore throats! Unfortunately, allergies, other illnesses and COVID-19 symptoms are all similar and we are not able to tell the difference. In order to keep everyone healthy at school, we are required to follow public health guidelines when students or staff have even one symptom. This is an important mitigating measure to decrease the potential spread of COVID-19 in our schools. If your child has 1 or more symptoms (fever, cough, chills, shortness of breath, fatigue, headache, body aches, sore throat, runny nose/congestion, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea) they should stay home from school or will need to be picked up if symptomatic at school. Follow these guidelines (they only apply if there has been no close contact with someone diagnosed with COVID-19):
- If your child has only ONE short term symptom (except for a fever) that starts and stops within 24 hours, they must stay home or go home from school but can return 24 hours after all symptoms are gone.
- If your child has more than one symptom, it lasts longer than 24 hours, or a fever, they must stay home from school and follow a, b, or c guidelines below:
- Student gets a COVID-19 test and tests negative. Students who receive a negative COVID-19 test can come back to school 24 hours after fever is gone (with no fever-reducing medication) and all other symptoms are gone. The school will need the paperwork documenting the negative test before returning to school. A COVID-19 test is not required but you then must follow b. or c. guidelines below.
- Isolate for 10 days at home. This means your child can come back to school 10 days after their symptoms began, and 24 hours after fever is gone (with no fever-reducing medication) and all other symptoms are gone.
- Student visits their health care provider about their symptoms. If they receive a documented diagnosis from the healthcare provider of illness other than COVID-19 (such as flu/allergies, etc) they can come back to school 24 hours after fever is gone (with no fever-reducing medication) and all other symptoms are gone. The school will need the documentation of the diagnosis from the healthcare provider before returning to school.
- For a positive COVID-19 test (BSD contact tracing team will follow-up with students who test positive):
- If your child has symptoms and tests positive for COVID-19 they must stay home from school and isolate for 10 days after their symptoms began, and can then come back 24 hours after fever is gone (with no fever-reducing medication) and all other symptoms are gone.
- If they have no symptoms but test positive, they must stay home and isolate for 10 days after the positive COVID-19 test.
- If your child has been in close contact with anyone diagnosed with COVID-19 they must stay home from school for 14 days after the last day they were in close contact with that person, even if they test negative.
Please let us know how your child is doing, if they have symptoms, had a COVID-19 test, and/or if they receive another diagnosis from their healthcare provider. The school nurse or teacher will follow-up and discuss return dates with you. All of this info is on the BSD website under health services https://bsd405.org/services/health/too-sick-for-school/ -look at the bottom for the link to the King County Public Health symptom flow chart. The chart has this same information but in a different format.
Please don’t hesitate to contact us with questions! Thank you for partnering with us to keep our community safe and healthy.

Weekend Mobile Dental Clinic
Who is eligible? Patients who do not have dental insurance, are underinsured, or are without any reasonable means to pay for or access to emergency dental treatment. Please note: Some sites may have extra eligibility requirements.
Cost of service? No charge.
What to expect upon arrival? We have pivoted our mobile clinic model to include curbside screening for COVID symptoms while the patient is in their car. When the patient is cleared of symptoms, they are invited to park and go to the intake tent to complete paperwork before boarding the Mobile Dental Clinic. Unfortunately, anyone exhibiting or acknowledging at-risk symptoms will be turned away. We are not performing COVID-19 testing at these dental clinics.
Washington clinics can provide dental services beyond emergency care including fillings and extractions. We do not provide teeth cleaning, dentures, crowns, or root canals.
COVID-19 Vaccine Information
Although children in general are at less risk from COVID-19, Children and Youth with Special Health Care Needs (CYSHCN) may be at increased risk for severe illness with COVID-19. Below is information on options for accessing vaccinations in Washington State for CYSHCN, their families, and providers. Please see above for information pertaining to WA DOH guidance on next phase of vaccinations for children and youth with special health care needs.
English Language Proficiency Assessment (ELPA-21)
This spring, the annual English language assessment for the 21st century (ELPA21) will be given to all students in Washington who have qualified for English language learning services. This evaluation will help determine the level of support your students may need for the 2021-2022 school year. This is an in-person test that will be conducted in the school building. Students will take tests in socially-distanced groups.
Bellevue School District is committed to ensuring that all safety protocols are followed by CDC guidelines while students are in the building for the test. However, parents/guardians also have the right to decide that their student will NOT participate in state tests this spring. Please take this survey to let us know. Our PLE ELPA-21 testing calendar is attached to this email.
Please ask your child to bring their fully-charged computer, charger, and headset. Thank you for your support. We are here to answer any questions.
Sincerely,
Patti Shah, Multilanguage Facilitator
Chhoun Mey, Assistant Principal
