This is ESPECIALLY for younger players! PLEASE follow these guidelines for safe behavior.

The exits to the Grades 2-12 playing hall (Gatlin B/C/D) will be color-coded. Players will be instructed to use the exit coded to their grade level.

The RED EXIT will be for Grades 9-12. The WHITE EXIT will be for Grades 5-8. The BLUE EXIT will be for Grades 2-4.

TOWN HALLS FOR PARENT/PLAYER INFORMATION!

We will have two town halls prior to the event! The second town hall will feature NTD Jon Haskel, the chief tournament director for the 2021 National K-12 Grades, and Pete Karagianis, Assistant Director of Events for US Chess. They will be available on Zoom to answer any questions you have about the tournament. Please join us for these informative sessions!

The first town hall was held Thursday, November 18, at 5:00pm Eastern time. We thank NTD Karen Pennock (floor chief, 2021 National K-12) and NTD Mike Hoffpauir (President, US Chess) for joining Pete Karagianis to facilitate this well-received informational event.

The second town hall will be on Monday, November 29, at 8:30pm Eastern time. The Zoom link for the November 29 town hall is here.


Hotel Room Cancellation Policy

Reservations must be received by Monday, November 8, and must be accompanied by a one-night deposit, plus tax, or guaranteed by a major credit card. Deposit are only refundable for cancellations occurring at least 30 days prior to scheduled arrival. (As long as there is availability, the tournament room rate will be available.)

INDIVIDUAL RESERVATIONS (9 rooms or fewer per night)

In order to confirm a room assignment for attendees, you will be required to provide a first night's deposit that will be charged immediately. The deposit is refundable up to 5 business days prior to the first date of your reservation. Checks and major credit cards are acceptable to establish prepayment. Credit cards will be charged immediately. The Hotel will deduct any collected nonrefundable prepayment fees from the amount that may be owed as performance or cancellation damages.

GROUP RESERVATIONS (minimum 10 rooms per night)

Any coaches that reserve 10 or more rooms per night will be required to provide a credit card guarantee for all rooms and will be charged a non-refundable first night's deposit 5 business days prior to the first date of your reservation. The Hotel will deduct any collected nonrefundable prepayment fees from the amount that may be owed as performance or cancellation damages.


Tournament details

13 Sections: Play only in your Grade.

  • November rating supplement will be used. (This is a correction from the previously advertised December list, which was not in line with the 2021-22 Scholastic Regulations.)
  • 1/2 point bye available any round if requested before round 1.
  • Players registering after 11 AM Friday will not be paired for round 1, will receive a half-point bye, and will begin play with round 2. Players requesting a section change late (after 11 AM Friday) will not be paired for round 1, will receive a half-point bye, and will begin play with round 2.
  • A Team must have at least two players, although no maximum of players. The top three scores in any section will count for the team score. All players on a team must come from the same school.
  • First place individual and team in each grade level, including ties, will be National Champion for their grade.
  • US Chess membership current through December 2021 is required.

Time Control: Game/90 d5 (each player has 90 minutes to complete the game with a 5 second grace period each move)

Entry Fee:   $70 if registered or postmarked by Nov. 22, $90 if registered or postmarked by Nov. 29, $105 by Dec. 1, $110 thereafter or on site. Do not mail anything after Nov. 30.
$20.00 extra for all phone registrations.
$30 change fee for roster or section changes after Nov. 29 or on site changes.

Schedule for Grades 2-12:
Opening ceremony Fri. 12:45 pm. (TENTATIVE)
Rounds start at: Fri. 1 pm-6 pm, Sat. 10 am-2 pm-6 pm, Sun. 9 am-1 pm.
Awards Ceremony: Sunday 4:30 pm (approximately)

Schedule for Grades K-1:
Rounds start at: Fri. 1:30 pm-5:30 pm, Sat. 9:30 am-1:30 pm-5:30 pm, Sun. 9:30 am-1:30 pm.
Awards Ceremony: Sunday 5:00 pm (approximately)


US Chess supplies boards and sets for this event. Players are responsible for supplying their own clocks. Players are also responsible for knowing how to set them, and how to explain their operation to opponents if asked.

Per the Scholastic Regulations, US Chess will provide scoresheets for players.

The use of these scoresheets is mandatory for all players. No other method of keeping score may be used, unless prior approval is granted by US Chess.
