South Dakota native Jon Wepking served as the adjunct assistant men's basketball coach for the Dragons through the 2009-2010 season and moved to assist the Athletic Department administration the following year as the Media Relations Assistant for Social Networking and Marketing before being named the Interim Assistant Athletics Director for Media and Public Relations and Sports Information Director in the Fall of 2011. He eventually was hired as the Assistant Athletics Director for Marketing and Production in September 2012. Wepking has been anything but a stranger to Nemzek, however.
He lettered two years with Dragon basketball, spent three seasons as producer for the Dragon Halftime Newsbreak and also served as the sideline radio analyst for Dragon Radio.
A basketball and golf captain and letterman at Huron (SD) High School, Wepking was named all-state in golf, all-conference in both sports and helped the Tigers capture the South Dakota State Class AA basketball title as a senior. He was also a member of the National Honor Society, FBLA and Pep-club President.
Wepking spent his first year at North Dakota State University but graduated in 2009 from MSU Moorhead with a B.S. degree in Secondary Education and completed his M.S. in Educational Leadership with an emphasis in Higher Education in the Fall of 2011. His father Jeff Wepking was a former all-conference basketball selection at NSIC rival Northern State University (S.D).
