Kennington Women’s Institute is one of the oldest WIs in not just Kent, but in Britain. WIs were first established in 1915 to revitalise rural communities and encourage women to become more involved in producing good during the First World War. Since then the organisation’s aims have broadened and WI is now the largest voluntary women’s organisation in the UK.
Kennington WI has continued these strong beliefs for more than 100 years, celebrating its anniversary in 2018. Members meet regularly on the second Monday of each month, and has established 15 special interest groups to provide women with educational opportunities and the chance to build new skills, take part in a wide variety of activities and campaign on issues that matter to them and their communities.
