Masterclass

This year’s festival promises to be a fantastic journey through Chicago’s jazz panorama!

Jazz Up Glen Ellyn 2023 is back and better than ever!

This year’s festival focuses on the ‘Chicago Sound’, with a wide selection of styles and sounds associated with our great city.

Vocalist Paul Marinaro headlines with his group and artistic director Fareed Haque will pay tribute to the late, great Ramsey Lewis. Gus Freidlander will play a set of King Oliver’s Chicago style traditional jazz and an all-star group from the AACM will represent the Chicago’s modern jazz scene.

In addition to these Chicago luminaries, Jazz Up Glen Ellyn and Bellas Artes School of Music will host a number of student groups on stage, as part of the Bellas Artes Jazz camp.

And as usual the festival will continue at night in local venues, so the music doesn’t stop!!

Produced by the Alliance of Downtown Glen Ellyn, with support from The Bellas Artes School of Music and WDCB Jazz Radio.

Meet the Artists

Artistic Director Fareed Haque

This year Fareed and his cohorts pay tribute to the legendary pianist/educator/radio and tv personality. Ramsey Lewis. Lewis passed in Sept of 2022. Known for his many groups and collaborations, Ramsey burst onto the jazz scene with his funky, grooving hit ‘The In Crowd’.

GUS FRIEDLANDER

Gus Friedlander, on banjo, is the founder of The Prohibition Orchestra dance band, has played with the Swing Shift Orchestra, also leads the Whiskey Hollow Bluegrass Band and plays traditional Irish music. He plays four and five string banjos, guitar, mandolin, bouzouki, fiddle and bass and teaches these instruments in private lessons.

BELLA ARTES JAZZ COMBOS

Eric Schneider’s musical adventures began early. Born and raised in the Chicago area, he was able to play melodies on the piano at age three. After graduating from the University of Illinois with a degree in Advertising, he returned to Chicago and joined Jim Beebe’s Chicago Jazz Band. Earl Fatha’ Hines, who knew a thing or two about good, young saxophone players (and had hired Charlie Parker some thirty years earlier) heard about Eric and requested an audition tape. This resulted in a four-year stay, touring all over the world, as well as the LP, Eric and Earl (Hines insisted on second billing). With Hines’ blessing Eric accepted Count Basie’s offer to join the Basie Orchestra and subsequently occupied the “hot” tenor chair for two years, following in the footsteps of his other main musical influence, Lester Young, who held the chair from 1936 to 1940. During his tenure with Basie, Schneider recorded three albums, including the Grammy Award-winning 88 Basie Street. These six years of nonstop touring brought him into the company of some of America’s greatest artists, including Ella Fitzgerald, Dizzy Gillespie, Benny Goodman, Sarah Vaughan, Tony Bennett, Clark Terry, Mel Tormé, Sammy Davis, Jr., Joe Williams, Ray McKinley, Rosemary Clooney, and Billy Eckstine.

An internationally renowned poet, writer, musician and founder of Spirit Speaks, Inc., Ugochi has executive produced, written and co-arranged three album projects; African Buttafly, A.S.E. and Love Shot. Ugochi has created an original Pan African poetry form called Ike, (pronounced EE-kay) #Ikepoem, paying homage to her Igbo culture of Nigeria. Ugochi is also a playwright, activist, TRHT practitioner, member of the AACM & Recording Academy/GRAMMY.
