  • Library’s Claim to a Portion of the School District’s Direct Assessment (FAQ)

    Dear Island Park Community Members,

As you may be aware, the Island Park Public Library has requested for the school district to share a portion of the LIPA direct assessment payment with them. As previously discussed, the school district has fulfilled all of its legal obligations and remitted all real property tax payments to the library. Furthermore, the settlement agreement between Nassau County and LIPA did not mention, nor require, that any payments be made to the public library. The library has received the voter approved amount it budgeted to receive through real property taxes.

Please read the attached Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) document which is intended to clarify the Board of Education’s unchanged position on this matter.

    Your friends and neighbors,

The Island Park Board of Education

    What’s happening?

At a time when expenditures continue to rise beyond the district's control, federal COVID funds are set to expire, and the school district continues to deal with the aftermath of the LIPA/Nassau County Tax Certiorari Settlement with respect to the E.F. Barrett Power Plant, the $118,000 reduction in state aid proposed by Governor Hochul could have long-lasting results for our schools.

    What can you do?

Contact Governor Hochul and our elected officials and help advocate for the full restoration of state aid for the Island Park UFSD.
