Cooperating Teacher Training - Overview of Part A,B, & C

Prior to student teacher placement, a cooperating teacher/university supervisors shall receive training approved by the Education Professional Standards Board and provided at no cost to the cooperating teacher/university supervisor by the educator preparation institution which shall include the following components: 

  • basic responsibilities of the cooperating teacher
  • best practices in supporting the student teacher
  • effective assessment of the student teacher


PART A: Basic responsibilities of a cooperating teacher/university supervisor (16 KAR 5:040, Section 1(3)(a) and Section 4(4)(a))

16 KAR 5:040, requires cooperating teachers and university supervisors to complete a training on the basic responsibilities of a cooperating teacher/university supervisor. Part A of this training is provided by the Kentucky Department of Education’s Office of Educator Licensure and Effectiveness (OELE) through an online format. Each cooperating teacher and university supervisor is required to complete the online training prior to starting a placement. Please reference the Part A Training Link for access to this training. 

Once the course has been completed the cooperating teacher candidate will be provided a certificate of completion. The cooperating teacher candidate may then upload their certificate on the Kentucky Educator Credentialing System (KECS) by clicking the "Profile" tab and then selecting the "Coop Teacher" link under the General section on the left side of the screen.

Please note: If you have already passed the Part A training for a previous placement you do not need to retake the Part A training unless requested by the EPP.

PART B: Best practice in supporting a student teacher (16 KAR 5:040, Section 1(3)(b) and Section 4(4)(b))

Part B will be provided by an educator preparation provider (EPP).  Each teacher must complete an approved co-teaching training.  Most EPPs offer Part B through an online training. The EPP will provide the link to complete the training before the student teacher is placed in the classroom.

PART C: Effective assessment of the student teacher (16 KAR 5:040, Section 1(3)(c) and Section 4(4)(c))

Part C is provided by each EPP. The student teacher’s EPP will provide the appropriate materials for this training.
